Hello everyone!
Finally, after more than one year waiting on my shelf, I am going to play DA:O and Awakening. During Christmas holidays :D (what can I say?, I have no time)
I have played the tutorial, just to test if the game works. But before really play, I would like to install the basic-mods every player need. Unfortunately, since I'm new of the game, I simply don't know which these files are. I've read around the net and each site suggests a different thing. But here I can ask for explanations :P
Can you please suggest to me:
1) mod for bug-fixing and improving game stability (are those needed?)
2) useful mods for gameplay
3) cosmetic packs (you all know how much needed are these!)
4) whatever must-have you think I should install
?
I hate playing for days, then discover I should have installed a mod and have to start the game again. So I prefer to install the "basic" mods asap.
Thanks! :)

Here is the single best mod resource I know. She also has an excellent mod install guide.

That being said, for just fixing bugs and cleaning up gameplay, the ZDF mod is truly stellar. I'm also a huge fan of Dialogue Tweaks. And handily enough, there are versions of each that play well with each other! Neither will break the game. They just clean up the dialogue and ensure that the romances work as intended, so that when you choose something, that's what you really get.

Oh, thank you, this seems so useful! ^^
Are those two mods already checked for working together or should I search for specific versions?
I think I need some time to "feel at home" also in this game :-D

There's a special DT compatibility version of the ZDF. They should play very well with each other if you use it.

Oh, where should I start?

1) I definitely recommend ZDF, which has already been mentioned here. And also this: http://dragonage.nex...s.com/mods/1120

2) Depends on what you mean by that. I think I use none in this department and am happy with the game. Come to think of it, respecialisation mod might be useful: http://dragonage.nexusmods.com/mods/14

3) Beautiful hair: http://dragonage.nex...ds.com/mods/392
More beautiful hair and my personal favourite: http://dragonage.nex...ds.com/mods/750
Pretty colours! http://dragonage.nex...ds.com/mods/153
Very popular mod with pretty eyes and make-up, etc.: http://dragonage.nex...ds.com/mods/473
Even more beautiful hair: http://dragonage.nex...s.com/mods/3552
And one more for hair: http://dragonage.nex...s.com/mods/3480
Interesting skins: http://dragonage.nex...s.com/mods/3583
Wonderful eye textures for the toolset: http://social.biowar...m/project/5066/

4) If you find out you're not happy with your character's appearance, but are already in the middle of the game: http://dragonage.nex...s.com/mods/1734
The toolset, definitely: http://social.biowar...page/da-toolset

Hm, I'm going to think about it.

o.O oh, my! So many links! You're definitely my heroine! ^^

By the way, how did you know I was searching for some decent make-up and skintone mods? The in-game options are so... so... I'll keep my opinion for myself ¬_¬

PS: is the link to the toolset a veiled suggestion that I should start modding also DA:O?

You know we greatly disagree on this :-D
I have to create a PC that I like before starting the game and if there are missing contents or bugs, it's useful to fix them before playing ;-)

I've added the toolset because I like to make my own presets for the game, but I guess it depends on you whether you want to go that far or not. It's not necessary and I must say I played my first game pretty much vanilla. I only added a hair mod for my first playthrough because I simply wanted to have a long-haired character. I agree with caradoc2000, the game is wonderful as it is. The mods do make it better though. In my opinion, that is. I enjoy making unique characters.

With all that said, the fixes are a must. I still can't get over that broken kiss scene during my first playthrough. <_<

What is a preset? Is it like creating the PC in the toolset before loading it in the game?
Caradoc hates mods on principle: ie: I've played KotOR 2 with the restoration mod, which adds tons of original unfinished contents and still he was sceptic :-D we quarrel a lot on this topic :-P

Preset is a head that you create for your PC. You can alter your character's face in the toolset much like you do in the character creator, but you have more possibilities. You can make different ears for your elves, for example, or larger irises, which I often do, because I love big eyes. Some mods rely on you being able to use it. The eye textures I've written about, for example. As far as I know, they can only be added via toolset. I even have a mod with pretty eyelashes somewhere, haha, and they also can only be added through toolset. I couldn't find them when I was posting the message. I'll look into it tomorrow and see if I can find them.
The problem with presets is that it's a hassle. You have to make it, export it, add the code into the chargenmorph file I wrote you about earlier... But I think it's worth it.

I understand caradoc's dislike for mods because I was like that not long ago. I didn't want to touch my games that way at all. It just didn't feel right. DA:O spoiled me in this aspect. I got used to fixing my game and being able to make my characters exactly the way I want them to look like. It also adds variety to the game if you've done a few playthroughs already. With all that said, I still don't like to poke the game too much and never add anything that breaks the lore.

[to do list: download toolset...]
Darling, where can I find a tutorial for coding this chargemorph file? I don't like the idea of messing up with the game without even knowing what I am touching :-/

I love mods because they add all the things that should have been already there but have been deleted due to time constraints. I can't see it like "changing the game", but as "seeing the game in its completeness" :-)

EDIT:
Ok, I'm confused. I was here http://dragonage.nex...ds/1120#content and... I really don't know which file I should download. There's the main file version at the 23rd of January, but below there's a "V.3" of 2nd of February. Should I download both or just the February one?
Imean, the guy said he was going to release a new version with all the new bugfix, but the "new" version is older in date...

The easy way to edit the chargenmorph file is to download the chargenmorph compiler: http://dragonage.nex...ds.com/mods/971
If you do that, then just keep each mod in a separate folder together with its chargenmorph in your override folder and after you've downloaded all of them, use the compiler (it will tell you what to do) to compile it into one file. If you add another mod, just make another folder and use the compiler again. The important thing is to have only one chargenmorph file in the override folder in the end. Also, be careful not to just overwrite it as that would prevent all the other mods from working properly. If some of the cosmetic mods don't work, it's usually because of a broken chargenmorph file.

If you want to do it manually, download a mod with a chargenmorph file. Open the chargenmorph in the notepad and carefully look at the contents. If you download another mod, you have to take the information from the new chargenmorph, which is missing in the previous file, and add them to the older one. You simply always have to add the new information to the chargenmorph in the override folder. The compiler is easier because if you have many mods, it might be difficult to find out which information is missing and what part you need to check. I do prefer to do it manually though. But I've used both methods so far, without any trouble.

If you make a new preset, you also have to add it into the chargenmorph file. But I would leave that for later, when and if you decide to make your own head with the toolset.

Thanks for instruction, darling! ^^ Though I am afraid you have missed my 2-minutes-ago editing of the previous post :-(

EDIT
And since we are here speaking... :-P I've found another dialogue-fix here http://dragonage.nex...ds.com/mods/928 How can I know if it would collide with the Morrigan's one you linked me?
(oh, damn, I feel so stupid! I hope to be able to understand something of this game soon!)

That's the one we posted somewhere towards the beginning of the thread. Mousestalker posted a link to it here. Anyway, I use both ZDF and Morrigan's and haven't encountered any trouble. I definitely recommend using both of them. As far as I know, it might collide with Dialogue Tweaks that are mentioned at the beginning of this thread. But I don't use that one, so I don't know for sure.

Hm, as for your previous post about the Morrigan's patch, I see three versions in the download section. One manual, one using the DA:O updater and one for different language versions of the game. If I remember correctly, you've said you only have subtitles in Italian, yes? Not the whole game. I'd say that the first link should do. I recommend using the DAZIP version. Once you download it, go to the bin_ship folder in your installation folder, e.g. C:/Program Files/BioWare/Dragon Age/bin_ship. There you will find an application called "daupdater". Start the updater and install the patch with it. If you want to install the localised version instead, just drop it to your override folder as usual, nothing else needed.

Now I've actually looked at the updates. Sorry, I didn't notice them before. It seems it's good to download both Additional_Epilogue_Fix_v3 AND Slidefixes_Bella_Kaitlyn, together with the main patch. Again, there's a localised version of the Bella_Kaithlyn file for different language versions of the game, so I guess that if you decide to use the localised version of the patch, you also should choose the localised version of Bella_Kaithlyn patch.

Are you saying that "localised" version is a version with a different language than the standard English one? Oh, how much I love you!, this was a question hanging around in my head since 3 days ago!

Hi!

I have created a ChargenMorph Compilation, find it
HERE !! Where all the hair mods, tattoos, face presets, hair colors, makeup mods are avalible and downloadable without using the complicated ChargenMorph Complier. Just click in on the mod and read the description!! =) it is soo simple!

But that's only all the mods I use for the character creator.....
B)

These are mods I really think you should install:
Dragon Age Redesigned (a must have!)
Alistair Improved Romance Scenes And Fixes
Alistairs First Night
Alistairs Visible Kiss
Kirkwall Exports
The Pheonix Armory for Females
Improved Atmosphere
Natural Bodies All In One
Grey Wardens Of Ferelden
Hsli Sexy Outfits
Character Respecialization
Better Sex Cutscenes
Make Console Commands Visible
Alistairs Royal Wedding
Zevrans Wedding
ZDF (see compability with other mods in description)
Flemeth's Robe
Silver Runic Armor

These are just some of the mods I used. I use so many ^^

I do not mention so many armor mods, beacuse I think when it comes to armor mods, it is your choice which ones you wish to install! :)

But here is one armor mod I think is amazing:

Tallis Armor Package
(the Tallis Armor Package is very, very beautiful! I also use a retexture on my Tallis armor, find it here! The only thing you need to do to make the retexture work is to download this file and open the "editor" then click Export and double click the tallis file you have chosen, then mark all files and export them to the override folder.
Open the override and now:

rename
ef_bdy_talb_0d
ef_bdy_talb_0n
ef_bdy_talb_0s
ef_bdy_talb_0t

to
pf_rob_chae_0d
pf_rob_chae_0n
pf_rob_chae_0s
pf_rob_chae_0t

and that should do the trick!)

So, thats some of the mods I have installed. But these are the ones I use the most. Look around at www.dragonagenexus.com for mods! :)

To say the truth... I downloaded your compilation 2 days ago :-P
About the list... O.O so many mods! I'm feeling dizzy! I have to take some time to read all the instructions. Thank you very much! ^^
Just a question. From what I've understood, this "natural bodies" add a naked texture to characters. But why? I mean, characters wear armors and robes and whatever... I'm a little confused here... [scratches her head]

Natural Bodies replaces your underwear, so that you are completely naked. It's for aesthetic purposes. And also if you download a bit... racier sex scenes. I believe I've told you about it once. Also about the fact that the gentlemen can, ahem, get functional. The armour stays, but if you take it off, you no longer see the underwear. I've heard the Natural Bodies mod is good if you have the Improved Romance Scenes, to prevent the lovers from "doing dishes" (carrying the term over to DA:O forums, yay ) with their underwear still on. Some people also simply hate the original body models or underwear, or both. That's what Natural Bodies are good for.

With all that said, I don't use those. Too blush-inducing. But you can still replace the body model with one of the mods I've posted above. Speaking of which, nice underwear: http://dragonage.nex...s.com/mods/1504

Anyway, don't worry about the mods. You don't need any to enjoy the game. Of course, a pretty Warden and bug and dialogue fixes are always good, but, personally, I've played the game pretty much vanilla for quite some time and it was still an extremelly enjoyable experience. Moreover, it's not as if you can't add further mods later. ;) Less worries, more gaming!

Rules fixpack
Detailed tooltips
Bugfixes, and letting you know what the hell things actually do. I'd recommend these to absolutely anyone for any playthrough. There's a couple of minor conflicts with these - mostly where the original description is wrong. For example, rules fixpack might change physical damage to nature to match the original description, whereas detailed tooltips changes the tooltip to the original damage type. You can just not add the relevant rule fix file to avoid these.

For items, you might also want:
Peasant's Edition
DLC merchandice
Basically these are just all of the DLC that came with random versions. Some of these (particularly collector's edition stuff) can be pretty overpowered, so... keep that in mind anyway. Having endgame gear in lothering can make things too easy.

And if you're also planning on playing Awakening without all your DLC disappearing...

Aesthetic ones I like:
No helmet hack
Personal annoyance remover
A lot of helmets are ugly. A lot of sustainables have obnoxious visual and sound effects. These let you get rid of them. The rules fixpack can also remove a lot of sustainable FX, so the latter probably won't be needed if you're using  the rules fixpack.

------------------------------------------------

I wouldn't advise any custom item sets at all. The vast majority of them are game-breakingly overpowered, and if you use them you'll really ruin the game. Save them for a replay and not the first time through. The same goes for any real gameplay-changing mod, IMO.

EDIT: Made links actually links because the forum didn't want to do it on its own.

@ Vanilka: About replacing bodies with other bodies, I have to say that the hands of DAO characters are... huge? o.O Really, I can't stop looking at them. Is there any of this new bodies able to set a normal dimension for hands?

@Dainbramage: uuuuh, more items? I LOVE items! ^^ And thanks also for the Awakening patch!
I was also looking (right few minutes ago I thought about that) for a way to remove those dreadful helmets. How did you know? What, people around here have started to read my mind? :-s
But to say the truth, even looking at the pic, I can't understand what the "personal annoyance remover" actually does. :-/

I posted some mods like that above (for humans, elves and dwarves, therefore the three links). They keep the underwear, which is nice if you're not comfortable with your characters and their friends running around completely naked. Just be careful not to download the naked addition for dwarves - that's the only danger there. The downside is that the mods make your character's breasts smaller - quite noticable with leather armour. I'm not happy about that. Otherwise it looks great in the game, in my opinion. The characters look much better when undressed and the shoulders, hands, feet etc. are nicer in general: http://social.biowar...117003#15118143 At least I'm rather happy with how my elven lass looks now.
If you are going to download this one, I recommend downloading the basic mod + the underwear addition, so that the proportions don't change as you put on and take off your clothes.

The Personal Annoyance Remover seems to remove the visual effects of some buffs. You probably can't imagine it now, but some of them are rather annoying - make you sparkle and what not. It's cute and everything, but it ruins the cutscenes for me. I want to take screenshots and thus don't want my characters glow or sparkle. Some people simply don't like it in general. With all that said, I don't use this mod, I've found a way to deal with it in the game, although not an ideal one. But I fully understand why somebody would.
