To be honest I don't mind if an RPG is easy (to a degree of course). I play them for the main story, stories of characters, dialogues, etc. ^^

The same reason why I don't create min-maxed heros, I like to have attributes that fits my conception for them, with both strenghts and weaknesses but neither of them are at the top or the bottom. This usually leaves me with an average hero (or hours upon hours of rerolling), thus making a game (at least a little bit) harder. :)

*edit : But I agree that Baldur's Gate II becomes really easy in the end.

So, time for a quick confession: I bought the original release of BG1 sometime back in '99, whenever it was that the price finally hit $20 in most stores. Because I have had a voluminous backlog since the final days of the SNES, I didn't get to it right away. I ended up spending a little time creating characters and playing around some of the early areas, but I didn't get too far before something more "important" came along (I'm pretty sure the game in question was the first Deus Ex) and I abandoned it entirely. I went through the six-CD installation juggling act a few more times over the years, but never got back to picking up where I left off.

Even though I still have the original game in its box with all the discs, I bought the Original Saga in a bundle from GOG.com in the past few months. A friend mentioned recently that he planned to pick up the EE, which got me thinking about finally going back and finishing BG a decade and a half after I first bought it.

I just started playing it this week with the "virgin" install downloaded from GOG, no shoehorning the game into the BG2 engine with mods etc. It's definitely a bit pixelated on a 17" 1600x900 laptop monitor, but I don't mind the overall look and feel. I spent a little time when I was younger playing some of the Gold Box D&D games, and BG reminds me a little of them, with some influence from the original Fallout in there.

I'm not knocking anyone who does play the game with mods installed, I just wanted to be able to play the game as I would have back when I bought it. So far I'm enjoying myself tremendously (maybe a little too much, I've had a couple 1-2 am nights this week) though it's surprising to see some of the more prominent elements of later Bioware games (party interactions, romances?) not yet implemented.
