Well... the mental prompting to write fanfic for this game was unavoidable from the get-go. Posted Image  Rather than fight it, I'm letting the impulse run its course.

Updates now denoted in this lovely shade of cyan. :P

Well-Woven Net
These stories are about my male city elf rogue, Alessar (yes, that name was completely unintentional! What a mistake to make! Posted Image ). I should probably say up front that he ends up in a relationship with Zevran, so if that sort of thing is not your cup of tea, well, you've been warned (and will be warned more thoroughly when/if it comes up in a particularly blatant way in a story... ;)  In progress, active.
  • Knot 1: Rather Unexpected - Alessar and company are intercepted on their journey by a woman begging for their aid...
  • Knot 2: Unkind Cuts - An unhappy visit to Denerim leaves Alessar pondering elves' place in society.
  • Knot 3: An Unintended Turn - Some things are just hopelessly awkward to discuss.
  • Knot 4: Unpleasant Dreams - In the wake of their misadventure in the Fade, Zevran poses an interesting question to the Grey Warden...
  • Knot 5: Undisclosed Fears - What started as a simple gift snowballs into a larger issue...
  • Knot 6: Uncomfortable Truths - Nothing seemed the same after finding the Urn of Sacred Ashes.
  • Knot 7: Unguarded Moments - With Arl Eamon's recovery, the company gets a little bit of downtime at Redcliffe.
  • Knot 8: An Unwitting Misstep - Directly following Knot 7, what Alessar and Zevran decide to do with their  evening. (Non-explicit, but pretty clearly implied, male/male action, if that is of concern ;)
  • Knot 9: Unchecked Reactions - Sometimes the Blight really does bring people together, Alistair!
  • Knot 10: An Unburied Regret - For once, Alessar gets to talk about why he became a Warden...
  • Knot 11: An Unwelcome Encounter - A chance meeting in Denerim may not have been chance after all...
  • Knot 12: A Most Unlikely Ally - With friends like these, who needs enemies?
  • Knot 13: Uncertain Steps - What seemed to be a polite gesture causes some unforeseen problems...
  • Knot 14: An Unwanted Reunion - Nothing ever seems to go as planned in the capital city.
  • Knot 15: A Gift Unlooked For - Can a gift hurt both the one giving it and the one accepting it?
  • Knot 16: An Unforgivable Trespass - Something precious, once broken, may never be the same.
  • Knot 17: The Unseen Net - Zevran is forced to come to terms with things he's been studiously avoiding.
  • Knot 18: An Unspoken Vow - When Alessar wakes, he's faced with a reality that's changed vastly in a day's time.
  • Knot 19: Miracles of the Unremarkable - Alessar engineers one or two things that might have otherwise been considered impossible.
  • Knot 20: An Unheralded Homecoming - Upon his return to the Alienage, one of the secrets Alessar has been keeping is finally revealed.

Stray Strands
These are shorter pieces that sort of go in between various parts of the Net.
  • Motivation - more of an set of notes for myself than anything, a glimpse into Zevran's thoughts very early in his association with the Wardens' party.
  • Armor - even the most mundane things can be interesting if they're unfamiliar.
  • Glimpse - Alessar sees something he doesn't mean to, and has decidedly mixed feelings about it... Falls between Knots 3-5.
  • Theft - Apparently Alessar's mabari has expensive taste... Occurs a bit after Knot 5.
  • The Slow Thaw - Zevran tries to use the miserably cold weather to his advantage.  Takes place after Knot 6.
  • Disillusioned - a snippet of conversation from when Alistair tries to help out with the herb-gathering.
  • Small Victories - Zevran doesn't lose many arguments with the Warden.  Set sometime between Knots 9-10.
  • Cursebreaking - Zevran and Alessar are left rather shaken after an unfortunate encounter with the werewolves; Zevran sees a need for a distraction. NSFW! Falls soon after Knot 10.
  • Sweeten to Taste - Alessar gets a little more help than he expected cleaning up a mess.  Set between Knots 10-11.
  • Tight Leather Clothing - The prompt was "wardrobe malfunction". Nuff said. ;)  Falls between Knots 10-11.
  • Bonds - Zevran reveals a bit more about his relationship with Taliesen. Falls very shortly after Knot 12.
  • Anchor - Nursing serious wounds, Zevran ponders the fact that he's not ready to die just yet.  Occurs between Knots 12-13.
  • Value - Alessar uses some "gifts" to buy a true gift.  Falls not too long after Knot 13.
  • Old Games with New Rules - Alessar demonstrates a childhood game to Zevran, with some decidedly adult results. NSFW!  Occurs sometime after Knot 13 and "Value".
  • Shelter - Sometimes the things we need shelter from aren't the most obvious... and neither are the shelters themselves.  Falls after Knot 13 and "Value".
  • A Gift - A silly side-story for Valentine's Day. Theoretically would happen very briefly before Knot 14.
  • Banishing the Beast - After the Landsmeet, Zevran still hasn't found the answer to a burning question.
  • Across the Threshold - The first thing Alessar sees after slaying the Archdemon is...
  • A Wager - A bit of silliness set not too long after the end of Origins.  Alessar in an archery tournament? Foregone conclusion? Maybe not...
  • A Fine Canvas - With the help of some liquid courage, Alessar requests a second tattoo from Zevran. NSFW?

-------------------------------------------------------

Awakenings and Beyond
Anything beyond this point may contain spoilers for Awakenings.. naturally.
  • A Letter - a more personal rewrite of that letter from Zevran.
  • Mirror, Sword and Shield - Alessar struggles with a Warden Commander's burden.
  • Resolve - After the battle, Alessar has no real choice about what he must do. NSFW?
  • Traps of Our Own Devising - The morning after "Satinalia".  Vows unspoken are kept all the same.
  • To the Victor... - Set after "Satinalia".  Zevran and Alessar have been reunited, but they've both learned some things in their time apart...
  • The Steel Key - Set some weeks after "To the Victor".  Zevran takes advantage of Alessar's trust and adventurousness to teach him something new.  NSFW!
  • Making an Impression - A DA2 crossover, and follow-on to "The Steel Key". Zevran shares a secret with an old friend that Alessar would rather keep.
  • Dogs of Lowtown - A DA2 crossover! What happens when mabari cross paths?

Satinalia
Some things prompted by events that are implied, but never shown, in Awakenings: the letter from Zevran that was never implemented in the game, and a rather uninformative mention of Zevran in the epilogue. In the spirit of all that vagueness, the events surrounding this story are left unspecified. ;) Complete?

-------------------------------------------------------

Et Cetera
  • Infiltration - written for Shadow of Light Dragon - Zevran's epic rescue of the Wardens from Fort Drakon, with help from the dog!
  • Fine Literature - written for Minaleth - Zevran presents Surana with a rather interesting gift...
  • The Debut - the tale of Zevran's first contract. NSFW!
  • The Lesson - giftfic by Tellervo - "Zevran decides Alessar needs to brush up on his close-quarters combat skills. Alessar isn't the best student, except for the whole 'close-quarters' part." NSFW!
  • untitled - exchange fic by reaperrain - Zevran has a definite plan for the evening's sleeping arrangements. NSFW!
  • Card Tricks - prize fic by TanithAeyrs.  Zevran gives Alessar a gift that keeps on giving.  PG-13 ;)
  • One Question - giftfic by Creature 1.  " This is what could have happened before Knot 13 of Well-Woven Net, from Zevran's perspective."
  • On the Hunt - a slice of life, Satinalia style, starring Zevran and Taliesen.  PG-13.
  • Recruitment - AU.  What if Zevran were the Warden, and Alessar the assassin?
  • Details - AU.  A follow-on to "Recruitment".  A gift from the Warden provides Alessar with a host of unanswered questions.
  • A Comfortable Delusion - AU.  What if Zevran had been the first to break out of the dream in the Fade, and had to rescue the Warden?  What sort of illusion would trap the Warden?

-------------------------------------------------------

Disappointments
A series about Devin Amell (male human mage) and his rather unhappy journey through Ferelden. Rated no more than PG. In progress, semi-active.
Aim - A snippet about Zevran's first major mission with Devin's company, and how it nearly goes awry.
The Contest - A silent battle of wills comes to a head after Redcliffe is saved from the walking dead.
Waves Spreading Outward - A sort of companion piece to Disappointments; friendship, from Jowan's point of view.
Mirror - After the events at Redcliffe, Zevran finds Devin in a sour mood and learns they have more in common than he thought.
A Marketable Skill - Devin and Zevran both know a good party trick, and Alistair is curious how it works.
Catchphrase - a silly moment when Alistair asks for help coming up with pro-Warden propaganda.
Refusals - pulled between two lovers, Devin draws a line.
Proof - set just after Awakening. There are a few things that cause Devin's mask to crack.
Eternally Missed - Anders finds Devin struggling to deal with the events of "Proof".
Revelation - Perhaps "proof" wasn't as definite as Devin thought.
Breaking - A slightly AU, post-Origins snippet. The Wardens from Weisshaupt have some questions for Devin...
Degrees of Separation - A somewhat silly twist on an encounter in Dragon Age 2. Spoilers for DA2.

As a rather naughty side-story to Disappointments, there is a short kink-meme-inspired series (each piece is in response to a different prompt) chronicling the unexpected relationship between Devin and Alistair. Rated M overall. Complete?

-------------------------------------------------------
Geese in Spring
AU. After the Blight, Warden Commander Devin Amell finds himself injured and in the care of one of Ferelden's Dalish clans. His particular savior and caretaker is a hunter named Zevran who is more than he seems... Complete.

-------------------------------------------------------
Dragon Age 2
I wonder if I need to make a new thread over in the DA2 forums... maybe when I get more than one story.  :P
  • Small Comfort Tristran Hawke wasn't really expecting condolences from certain people...

Thanks for reading!

I've just finished reading Rather Unexpected, and I must say, you have an excellent writing style. Your descriptions and dialogue was completely true-to-character, and I like the human element you added to your protagonist - his thanking of the Maker when Leliana didn't add her opinion especially made me chuckle, because I would probably feel the same way if I were traveling with a goody-two-shoes cloistered sister as well. I also think your wording is brilliant, a prime example of it being during the combat sequence, when you use phrases like "tentative feints" and "weaving in counterpoint" to pull the reader's attention and make it all feel a little more real and easier to visualise.

My one qualm is your usage of in-game dialogue - meaning the way you use a few lines from the actual scenes as they happened. Now, I know that it's pretty much unavoidable to use a little, but if during a conversation one person is just saying things we players already heard in the game, it becomes a little less interesting to read. Overall though, great work, truely. I'm looking forward to anything else you choose to post. Posted Image

Thank you, Sytheren! I have to say that the farther I get away from writing it (sometime yesterday), the less happy I am about the quoting of in-game dialogue. But Zevran's introduction just sets up so much about his character that skipping that scene seemed cheap, and paraphrasing it would feel odd. I won't be doing that again -- certainly not to that extent! Maybe some one-liners here and there, though. XD; Some lines have just become legendary already, hehe.

I'm especially glad to hear that the NPCs sound in-character, I constantly worry about stuff like that! Thanks! :3

And thanks, frostajulie! My poor first PC, doomed to at least a year of silly questions and bad jokes. ;D

VERY well written. I can see why you used the lines from the game itself in the first installment, so I won't complain overlong about that, but the rest of the story...

You have a gift for words. The dialogue was spot on, and absolutely in-character, and even the action sequence in the first story was well done, without getting too focused on details so that it bogs down, and yet not being so scarce that it felt rushed.

In summary, the action was well-paced, the dialogue was perfect, and the character interactions were superb. Me likey! Moar plz!

Thank you, Stubborn_Jelly! :3

And thanks very much, khevan! Action is definitely a weak point for me, and it's something I need to use more, I think, to ever get comfortable with it, so I'm glad that it seemed to work well enough here. XD; Thanks, too, for your comments on the dialogue; I feel like I'm juggling eggs when writing other people's characters, sometimes! ^_^;

I'm with khevan, Moar Plz!! I really enjoyed reading these, I like how the conversations between them flow, and your Alessar is quite endearing. I look forward to seeing more soon!

Thanks, Tharissa! :D I'm glad Alessar's a bit likable. He's a little clueless, that boy.. XD

Aaaand a new "knot" has been posted! :3 Expecting another one tomorrowish... So many delicious bits of in-game conversation to mull over, so little time...

Woooo!! Another knot to read!!

And once again, I loved it. I imagined my city elf with a similar reaction to being turned away at the gate to the alienage... and Zev's response was just perfect.

Also, the line about "bleeding heart that she was"... I died. Alessar's thoughts on Leli are priceless!

Thank you, tallon! :D

And yet another today. XD Thanks again, Tharissa! :3 Being turned back from the gate was pretty powerful, for such a small thing... and I love all of the various anti-elf comments you get throughout the game. (Like Connor's... holy crap. o_o) I wonder if playing as a human will seem tame after that. XD

Hehe! I think Leli wears on Alessar a liiittle bit. ;D

Loving it! Loving it to the point that I am now behind at work. Drat you and thank you! You've definitely got an ear to the characters' cadences.

Thank you, AdorableAnarchist! Posted Image   It's fun trying to get a feel for the companions... although they're so well-written in the game that it's much easier than it might be with other games, I think!  Hehe... sorry about work... although I'm kind of in the same spot... Very nice, makes me despair of my story! I was amused that Alessar can't defeat Zevran in a battle of wits when Zevran is armed with innuendo.

Seems to me how close Zevran came to actually killing him could present an obstacle, I'm interested to see how you deal with it.

Thanks very much, Creature 1! :D  Innuendo seems to be Zevran's weapon (and defense...) of choice, at least for now...  (Hmm, I wonder if you've posted your story yet? I think you were talking about it on the Zev thread.  But I'm sure it'll be awesome! :o )
I think I'm definitely going to have fun with that little issue.  Because I apparently enjoy making things difficult for my characters. Posted Image

Thanks, Marcus! :3 Hehe, I almost always pick an elf first when given a choice, but I've been pleasantly surprised with how much it affects even little dialogues in this game. It really helps you get into the oppressed mindset. XD
