I've looked through the forums, and I haven't found any similar problems anywhere that can give me a good answer or solution.

I got DAO for xmas, and I have been playing and enjoying it daily. When I saw on the forums that there was a very recent patch, I downloaded it from the Admin's forum post, and installed it. After installation, the launcher opens up just fine, but when I click the "Play" button, nothing happens. The launcher just sits there, with an inactive Play button. Then I went to "C:\\\\Program Files\\\\dragon age\\\\bin_ship\\\\daorigins.exe" and tried to open the game directly from the program file, and I got a message saying:
*****************************************************************
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Dragon Age\\\\bin_ship\\\\daorigins.exe

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more details.
*****************************************************************
I posted my problem in other forums (http://social.biowar...87251/40#541290,http://social.biowar...526895/1#530899), but unfortunately, the only advice I've gotten is to install the latest version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (thanks to Snow0815 for trying to help), and that didn't fix my problem. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, as well as redownloading the patch several times, and I still get the problem. When I emailed the EA Support Website, they pretty much said "We're sorry, try opening the .exe from the Program File" and considered the problem solved. Unfortunately for them, I've already tried that, and that's what my whole problem is.

The game runs perfectly fine on v.1.00. Does anybody have any advice or solutions to this, or am I S.O.L. for the moment and wait for the next patch and just play on v1?

First, if you're running Vista / Windows 7, disable the UAC before you try to install. PC gaming has been pretty much reduced to dodgy console ports, so any operating system innovation past windows xp sp2 can cause problems.

Try uninstalling the game (and then manually deleting any leftover files, including logs, etc. Any old file left around can screw the install), use CrapCleaner to remove any temp files and bad registry keys, then try re-installing the game from Safe Mode. When the game is installed, run CrapCleaner again, reboot and go back in to Safe Mode, then install the patch.

Boot back in to your regular account. Run the Configuration tool from the game's folder to set your graphics options. Then create a desktop shortcut to the game's exe file (not the launcher). Edit the properties of the shortcut, and set it to "Run As Administrator". If you have a 64-bit OS and less than 4gb of ddr2-800 ram, I'd recommended trying "Compatability Mode - Windows XP SP3". Seems to solve some crash issues.

Thanks for the tactic. Unfortunately, I still get the same "Side By Side Config" error.

Disable the UAC?

What is UAC?

It doesn't appear to be UAC-related.  Personally, I think it's NET Framework, and is in Windows, not DA: O.  I found hundreds of hits using Google, but none seemed to have any Microsoft KB links (I prefer those when I'm pretty sure the fault is in Windows somewhere).

I wish I knew more, but it's probably already been fixed, and one Google hit or another will be what is wanted.

side-by-side refers to how windows handles versioning of system libraries. This is probably a visual c++ runtime problem. Try reinstalling the latest visual c++ runtimes. Search microsoft site for more info.

You can look up "winsxs" for more info.

Isn't 2005 the one for this game?

Try uninstalling it (them), and reinstalling the latest. IIRC the 2005 version was the problem for me on vista
