A Warning to all of you who needs this guide.
!CHECK YOUR WARRANTIES BEFORE CLOCKING YOUR CARD!
!CLOCKING THE CARD COULD REMOVE YOUR WARRANTY!

---

This is ONLY for HD 3870 cards.
If you have a HD 4000 series or HD 5000 series card with this problem, then underclocking it might work.
But i wouldnt know the Clock Values needed.

If a MOD sees this, then perhaps a stickie would be in order until the problem has been solved?

---

Zethell's Underclocking Guide.
HD 3870 cards ONLY

FIRST THING FIRST:
IF YOU'RE NOT SURE WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
THEN GET SOMEONE THAT KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING TO HELP YOU.

PREPERATIONS:
1. Download Riva Tuner 2.2.4 2009. ( downloads.guru3d.com/RivaTuner-v2.24c-download-163.html )
2. Install Riva Tuner 2.2.4 2009.
3. Start Riva Tuner 2.2.4 2009.

4. Write down your default (current settings) Core & Memory clock values. (for manual clock reset)

Ok, lets get started!

UNDERCLOCKING GUIDE: Follow the steps carefully and in the right order.
1. In Riva Tuner, click the [Customize] button, right next to your graphics card, drop-down menu.
2. Click the [Low-Level system settings] button (looks like a graphics card, icon furthest to the left).
3. Check "Enable low-level hardware overclocking".
f.imagehost.org/0424/Riva1.jpg

4. Set Core clock to 740.0 (finetune with arrowkeys Left-Right)
5. Set Memory clock to 1100.0 (finetune with arrowkeys Left-Right)
OPTIONAL STEP. Check "Apply overclocking at Windows startup" to keep the clock from resetting after reboot.
f.imagehost.org/0411/Riva2.jpg

6. Click Apply then OK.
7. Click OK to close Riva tuner.

8. Start CCC and view overdrive to check that the card has been successfully underclocked.
9. Monitor the heat for a while in IDLE, if it stays around 60-63 or lower, then you're safe. Close CCC.
f.imagehost.org/0811/overdrive.jpg

CCC = Catalyst Control Center.

10. Start Dragon Age: Origins.
11. Go to the game graphics settings.
12. Un-Check "Play in Full-screen mode".
13. Un-Check Vertical Sync.
14Un-Check Frame-Buffer Effects.
15. Set Anti-Aliasing to off.
16. Set Desired Resolution, Graphics Detail and Texture Detail.
17. Apply the settings.

18. If you have a singlecore CPU, then you are done now. enjoy playing if it works.

----

For everyone with a DualCore CPU or QuadCore CPU, do this as well. (everytime you start the game)
1. Start Dragon Age: Origins.
2
. Start taskmanager (CTRL+ALT+DEL)
3. Right Click DAOrigins.exe and select "Set Affinity".
4. Un-check "All Processors"
5. Check ONLY CPU 0.
f.imagehost.org/0992/Affinity.jpg

Exit Task Manager & enjoy the game.

OTHER NOTES:
This is how i fixed this problem with my HD 3870 card, using the latest 9.12 drivers and Win7 Ultimate x86.

This might make the game more playable, but it MIGHT still crash now and then, so remember.
Press F5 to save, often..

Share this guide with everyone that has the problem.

* Removed hate, we all have it, but we dont need it.
* Added pictures to guide.

If the game still crashes, try lowering the "graphics detail".
If the fix works, or doesnt work for you, let me know by posting a response to this thread.

KNOWN BUGGED AREAS:
Ostegar (Works with Fix)
Korcari Wilds (Works with Fix)
Flemeth's Hut (Works with Fix)
Encounters on WorldMap (Works with Lower Graphics and this Fix)
Honnleath - The stone prisoner [DLC] (Area is too bugged, does not work with Fix or Lowest Graphics)

FIX STATS:
Fix worked for.. 4 people.
Fix didnt Work for.. 1 person.

SAD STORY:
This guide/fix proves that the problem lies with Dragon Age: Origins.
Problem is that the game isnt fully compatible with Multi-Core CPU's and the HD Radeon Cards.
It's such a shame that everyone has decided to play the "blamegame", even BioWare.

Awesome guide and it should get a sticky. Considering this is the solution to a problem several people have been having. I would follow through with it but I just stop playing the game and wont get the DLC or expansions until I can finish the original game. I don't want to have to do a work around for a game. If it was an isolated problem on my end I would understand but when I saw how many people were asking for some kind of response I knew it couldn't just be me. I am willing to give you my money for awesome story but I can't do that unless I can play the game longer then 5 minutes.
Edit: Thanks for the guide Zethell .

Anyone have an idea on what a 4850 should be set to? Right now I am underclocking mine 50mhz and pushing the fan up to 70%. Also why not just underclock it via CCC?

I guess using CCC would work just as well.

I just preffer RivaTuner, so that's how i wrote the guide, using RivaTuner.

I am having this same problem.

Windows Vista 64 bit, hd3870 card, 4 gb ram, quad core cpu

Game played flawlessly for 30 minutes or so with settings on high and then it began freezing. It would take a hard restart to get computer back up and running. Now, the game just restarts my computer after 45 seconds of gameplay or less. I have tried all suggestions here and I am wondering if there are issues with the nvidia physx drivers not being compatible with the ati drivers?

Please help

The guide didnt work for you?
Try setting your graphics to low, apply the Underclocking and Set the affinity to CPU0.
If that doesnt work for you, then i'm not sure if you have the exact same crash..

I myself havnt even installed any PhysX drivers, so that COULD be the problem.
Are you using the CCC 9.12 Drivers? They work best with DA:Origins.

Also, try killing all unnecessary tasks in taskmanager, while playing.
The most vital tasks are..

If you have ATi:
atiedxx.exe
atiesrxx.exe
mom.exe (catalyst monitoring, can be shut down)
ccc.exe (catalyst control center, can be shut down)

Windows default:
csrss.exe (2 of them)
dwm.exe
explorer.exe (can be shut down after you've started the game)
lsass.exe
lsm.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
svchost.exe (should be around 12 of them running normally)
system
system idle process
wininit.exe
winlogon.exe
taskmgr.exe (taskmanager, will be shut down as you close taskmanager)

---

Any other tasks than these could be shut down.
Also, check your Services for any odd services running (make sure you only display NON-microsoft services)
How to check services:
1. f.imagehost.org/0346/msconfig_start.jpg
2. i.imagehost.org/0730/services.jpg
Shut down anything unnecessary, like, punkbuster or any FTP/HTTP you might be running.

Edit:
Are you sure that your card really got underclocked?
Did you check the values in Catalyst Control Center Overdrive?

If you are a victim of this bug, then do NOT buy "The Stone Prisoner" DLC.
The DLC area is too bugged, beyond repair with community fixes, and will not work.
It is a waste of money until BioWare decides to fix the game.

Updates to Fix:
* Added statistics.
* Added known bugged areas.

If anyone has the clock values for the HD4700 series, please send them to me so i can update the guide.

Yes, I used Riva and underclocked to 740 and 1100 memory speed.  I have since re-upped back to the 800/1170 defaults with the 3870.  I had used a driver cleaner and got rid of the nvidia and CCC drivers, then reinstalled 9.12.  The game would not load " missing physxloader.dll", so I reinstalled the physx package.  The game then went into its fits of crashing and restarting again after it finally became loadable.

I have tried setting the affinity and closing out all non windows/ati processes using Uniblue's process scanner..I have tried rolling back CCC back to even 9.5, and every one since then.  Each time going to safe mode, driver clearner, and installing the new CCC pack.

I have a quad core 2400 and enough ram that the min requirements are not an issue.  I have tried setting all settings to low but still the restarts.  The game itself sets the details to high when it does its initial scan on loading the configurations page.  I have tried playing in windowed AND non windowed mode, playing with all items checked and unchecked in the config page..turned off the online screenshot issue.

I am just not sure where to go next and I can't get an answer from Bioware tech support ( 3 days now waiting for an email response other than to check the FAQ on the support forums).  I really am looking forward to playing this, especially since I bought it for my son on PS3 and have to painfully watch him play through it without an issue.

I did go and run 3dmark06 and other games to see if the card was an issue, and it was not.  It passed both the test and played crysis and bioshock without issues.  I really do appreciate the fix and the replies but I would love to see some official answer to this problem.  I am not an nvidia fan and would hate to not be able to play the new star wars mmo when it releases because of ATI conflicts.

Dont bother with Tech Support, they are just going to blame it on ATi.
Well.. It's sad to see that this fix doesnt work for everyone then. :(

If this really was a problem on ATi's side, more than just Dragon Age: Origins, would have the same problem.

Also, it's quite a shame that BioWare ignores this problem..
Now we all know what to expect from future BioWare games. (Mass Effect 2) which i was looking forward to.
I really wish that i had pirated Dragon Age before choosing to buy it, really, 50€ gone to waste. :(

I think I replied in another thread you originally wrote your underclocking suggestion. Just to re-affirm that underclocking coupled with low graphics in Ostegar. Ostegar is the first section where the 3870 craps out on me. Going into the Kocari Wilds I can raise the settings back to high detail and the other early places are fine (Lothering, starter zones), but yeah Honnleath is totally rubbish. Totally craps out there just like Ostegar. That is not the pre part when you talk to the dude that sends you to where Shale is, but when it goes to the map and loads the real area, it crashes. Really annoying but underclocking works for me. Cheers, mate!

now can we get a patch or official reply for this issue....

Edit: There has been a reply to an upcoming patch for the game and the problem with ATI video cards and some other cards in general acknowledged on page 7.

http://social.biowar.../index/576445/1

Would still be nice if this post got stickie until an official fix came out :D

- "ATI card fixes - good question. As with any hardware specific issues these are harder to reproduce as we don't have every card/model in-house, and/or may require driver updates from the hardware partner. I know we're looking at issues such as these, but off-hand I don't have an update for this one specifically."

This says nothing about any fixes.

Most likely, they're still gonna blame ATi for it.

But i guess we could always wish & hope.

I just wanted to warn everyone with this bug, that you might want to stay away from dragon age until it's fixed..

This bug causes your graphics card to overheat, it doesnt show up on the temp meters, but my card was getting extremly hot while playing dragon age origins, and now the damage is permanent.

(The card runs cool while playing crysis on VeryHigh DX10, however the damage is done and now i cant play anything without getting bluescreens or crashes.)

I doubt BioWare would take responsibility for this and replace my broken card.
As they dont even take responsibility for the bug at all.

So just to get it out there..
DO NOT PLAY DRAGON AGE IF YOU EXPERIENCE "NO SIGNAL" CRASHES!
Permanent damage to your graphics card may occur.

Still no help from Bioware. I went ahead and bought an HD4850 today and should have it in a few days. This is a "I hope they finally read this" bump..

Well, just got my other graphics card, and now the game works.

Funny huh?

Who would of had known that it was actually a problem with the game!

And any bioware employes better make sure that i dont get my hands on them.

Even i wouldnt know what horrifying things i'd do.
