So "they" say it's ATi's fault.

Just because every other game I have other than NWN2(yes, I know that was Obsidian), Mass Effect and Dragon Age run just fine doesn't mean it's not ATI's fault. *sigh*

Zethell, DA:O broke your 3870?!

I have had the same problem - 3870x2 and the last time DA:O crashed and forced me to restart my computer I have been unable to use any game or 3D app, I just get Blue screen error 116, did you get anything like that??

I've tried every fix on the net that I can find and have started to think the 3870 is broken, but can a game crashing like that kill the hardware?

Balder84, your card has been damaged by the overheating that DA:O is causing.
Your warranties might cover this.

I usually get a bluescreen or the computer just reboots by itself when i try to play any games on my 3870.
The weird thing is, that it's not the GPU on the card that overheats, it's something else..

The card is now generating a ton of heat, and it still reads +59c in CCC.

I dont know how, and i didnt think it was possible, but Dragon Age Origins CAN ruin your graphics card.
It has ruined TWO HD 3870 for me, so far it's handling my HD 5770 just fine thou, it's not generating extreme heat from the GPU or the card.

Thanks for the feed back Zethell, I had a tech guy come out to look at my PC the other day, he says broken 3870 :-(

Could the game be burning out the DDR3 memory on the card? Or at least part of it. My card runs in idle ok but anything more and it blue screens....

Keep us updated about that 5770, I thinking I'll just up grade to the 5870, shame my 3870 was such a good card it converted me to an ATI fan :-)

I'm having the same issues with my 3870 X2, should i get someone to come check it out and get a replacement? I was enjoying DA:O before it started killing off my PC.

Travio247 not you too, sigh. I have dead 3870x2 as well.

Getting a tech guy to check your 3870 is a good idea, if it's still within warranty you can get a replacement and avoid spending big money on a new card - just don't play DA:O!

I don't think its fried yet, Im running on low settings in windowed mode to try and stop it crashing... Will post the results if it works. Other games like MW2 and empire total work still run fine on full settings.

If your card is fried from DA:O, then you wont be able to run TF2 more than 30 mins before it crashes.

Sometimes only a few mins.

So i'd try out TF2 to check if it's damaged. (Team Fortress 2)

Just finished the game and I won't be playing it again until I get myself new hardware. It wasn't worth the hustle or the danger of destroying graphics card. Maybe it would be more fun if I could be playing it on the settings that my 3870 can manage and in full screen...most of the time it was just too annoying...

Thanks Zethell for your help, just hoping I wont be needing it with mass effect 2...

;) Dont worry, Mass Effect 2 will run nicely on your HD 3870, even on highest settings.
Finished it yesterday on my HD 3870.

Ok, i'm gonna test out Dragon Age: Origins and all the DLC on the HD 5770, to see if the problem remains with this card as we..

I'll post any updates inside this post, via EDIT.

Edit:
The game runs fine on the HD 5770.
Thou, i'm still uncomfortable and a bit afraid of running the game, seeing as i'v lost 2 graphics card to this game already.

I wouldnt recommend running this game at all infact, it's too high of a risk until we get some patches.

DA:O needs a BIG patch to fix all it's problems, so far it's been a disappointing waste of money, all the bugs have killed the fun.

Zethell if your uncomfortable, I can't imagine how I'll feel - I just ordered a 5870 Vapor-X to replace my 3870x2.......eeep.....I think I will wait for a patch.

I'm looking forward to ME2 as well but right now I hardly feel Bioware deserves any more of my money.

well I looked forward to playing this game since it's release. Saved my hard earned money to purchase it. Spent the next month convincing my wife to let me get it. That was the hard part. Get the game..install it play it for 30 mins and BAM crash. ok no biggy happens with most games figure out whats wrong and fix it. 2 weeks later after hitting these forums I find that out of all the friggin video cards in the world my ATI 3870 is the ONLY one that has major problems with this game. So who's fault is that? The $125 video card or the $45 game? Does it matter? I really don't care who fixes it. Just FIX it!! ok I had to vent. thought I would feel better but I don't.. and if my video card gets fried and I have to try to convince my wife that I need a new one when I just bought this one..I'm giving her YOUR number Bioware, you deal with her.

I am just wondering if anyone running an ATI 4870 is having any problems with the game. Since its only about $129 right now and since I cant play dragon age I figured would play mass effect 2. Well, if it even works with either the ATI 3870 or the 4870. Since I would hate for it not to work on either card and I got to go out and buy another one.

AngelDCX, the HD 5770 and the HD4870 are basicly the same card, except the 5770 is better, and about the same price.
Thou, the HD 5770 does have drivers issues atm.

Also, DA:O works with the HD5770, confirmed by me.

Mass Effect 2 can be maxed out on a HD 3870 with 55~ Average fps, fyi.
I used a Phenom2 3.0ghz with 4gb ram to max it with 3870.

I'm doing the same Travio haven't had any problems yet not even when I went to get shale. Still scares the crap out of me though. I hope I'm not unknowingly frying my card. Would still be nice to get a patch though so I can play in fullscreen and reclock my card back up to where it should be.

I have heard unconfirmed intel of people's Graphics Card's Memory frying on DA:O while the GPU was just fine. (Like with Balder84.) Could there be bugs in the game in interacting with some forms of Graphics Cards's Memory?

I don't have any of the cards this thread has mentioned as of the time of this post, but I will lend this thread my support & support the efforts for a Sticky.

Another factor, Check your Case Fan setups & make sure your Case is getting enough ventilation, & make sure there is no area of your Case under vented or non vented that could be a Hot Air Pocket Danger Zone. (Especially at & below your Graphics Card)

DA:O is appearing to be the fiercest puder tax i've ever seen, & conventional Case Fan setups (1 - 2 Case Fans & a CPU Fan) may be choking on the load. I can't be sure of this, & it's a theory for now. I can't help but to wonder if Case ventilation is an easily overlooked aspect of puder maintenance?

Hope I helped.

I've got and HD 3870 also and have been playing since a bit before chrsitmas, having clocked a bit over 80 hours of game time. I'm not sure if that includes the enormous amount of time I've replayed certain areas to to loosing progress from a crash or my entire party dying :pinched:.

The idea that this may happen to me is both frightening and secretly exciting. Frightening in that the idea of my video card suddenly falling prey to something I am certain was never intended. And exciting in that what better excuse to upgrade a piece of equipment than due to catastrophic failure :bandit:. My wife enjoys watching this game too much to allow it to not be played for too long.

In any case, I'ts run just fine with no more crashes than just about any other pc game I've played in the last 15 years or so. I've got the settings a notch above what was recommended from the configure scan when you first install and since I've rebuilt/upgraded (new memory and OS) my system it's as smooth as butter even with major mobs on screen. I do have a different issue that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else though.

New drivers from ATi is out.

v10.1

Hopefully ATi has been able to resolve BioWares bad code, but the chances are slim.

Could anyone try them out on a HD 3870 that's still working?

I've updated my drivers and still have the grid lines on the ground I reported in my other post. I am also getting BSODs and they certainly seem to be coming more often. I am hoping that my card isn't dying; however if it is, are there any suggestions for a good mid-range card if it comes to that?

HD 5770 is cheap and good.
It's a replacement card for the HD  4870 cards that are going out of production.

It has added support for DX11, SM5.0 and some other nice stuff.
As well as 1GB GDDR5 Memory, Making it 4 times as fast as the HD3870 memory. :D

I got one myself after Dragon Age burnt my two HD 3870.

I am going to try the drivers out to see how far it gets me. With the AIT 5870 running at 1600 streams and the 5890 going at 3200 I am debating if its just worth it to wait it out and see if the HD 5870 drops to around $300 and the 5890 to $500. Well edit once I get the drivers going and see if there is a fix.

Edit: Yep the 10.1 video drivers didnt do anything besides extend the life of my gamplay 2 mins or so. I was running in fullscreen with everything up and no joy.
