Sofar, just by browsing, it looks like The Walking Dead has a lead.
I thought this year was solid, but I personally think 2011 was much better. Among my favorites that year were Skyrim, Dark Souls, The Witcher 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. All absolutely stellar.

Gosh dang it... Such a pile of good games to pick from.
I guess I'll pick The Walking Dead due to the sheer amount of emotion it evoked. After finishing I had to stand back and say to myself, "This is the reason why I game." The characters, the atmosphere, and the story were top-notch.
Runner up: Tied with XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Far Cry 3
XCOM was what I wanted from these type of games in term of gameplay. All the customization to make your squad yours is just plain awesome. Nothing I can say can express the sheer joy of having my sniper doubletap two ugly mutons in quick successions that were about to take down my final assault trooper all across the other side of the map.
Far Cry 3 is the same but for open world games. The gameplay is solid and the story is engaging as you can traverse across a breathtaking landscape in searching for your friends. All the different ways to take down your enemies were great. Also the recurve bow kicks some serious ass.

The Walking Dead drew me in more than any other game this year, so TWD it is.

I'm not surprised. The real talent is starting to come from the indie market. The coporations are only interrested in a "sure thing", who gives a flying fück about MoH or Fifa 2087?!?
The indie market isn't entirely without problems. A lot of them are just based on gimmicks or are simple platform games in some highly stylized levels. That's fine, but maybe that's not the kind of game I want to play.
It's really the same thing whether the game was made by a large corporation or a small indie team. I don't want to play the majority of them.
One thing you won't get so much in the indie market of course is the DLC madness and micropayments all over the place.
I think you have a point. Just look at all the plethora of tower defense games and such; the indie market obviously has some gems in it, but that doesn't make it immune to a lack of innovation.

Mass Effect 3.
By far it has given me the most entertainment. Best of all, I didn't even need to buy or play it.

The Walking Dead
with honorable mention to Spec Ops The Line.
I still have to play Far Cry 3, XCOM and finish Borderlands 2, but I'm pretty sure they won't amaze me as much as The Walking Dead or Spec Ops.
Dishonored, Assassin's Creed III, Darksiders 2, Alan Wake's American Nightmare and LEGO Lord of the Rings were also really enjoyable.

XCOM definately. Nothing pushed my buttons more.
And I say this after incredible job ACIII did with ship combat. Possibly my favorite thing in any game this year, but overall I just didnt' care for Connor that much. Honorable mentions to Borderlands 2 and Dragon's Dogma. Love em.

for me, it's either the walking dead or Mass Effect 3, but I probably will name Walking Dead as my goty given ME3's unsatisfactory ending.

Spec Ops: The Line
This.
So ****ing under-rated, it's disgusting really.
I just hope that this game is seen as a gem in the future, a cult classic. One of those that age better and then suddenly remembered and becomes amazing.

I would have voted Spec Ops but the Walking Dead man... so many emotions, few of them good.

I know...I know...
I chose Spec Ops: The Line purely because it is so so so under-rated and deserves better treatment and everyone else is mentioning The Walking Dead which don't get me wrong is an amazing game, really brilliant and loved it so much.
But Nolan North's voice acting we phenomenal. I and pretty sure the majority know Nolan for Nathan 'Nate' Drake, the wise cracking douche from Uncharted, but Nolan did a completely different role I did not expect him to even deliver but he did indeed deliver.
The change from a calm and collective Walker to this violent monster that Walker became during the story was just brilliant, the change in Walker's tone, his behaviour and his general appeareance (that stare).
It's not Walker committing the crimes, it's the player and culminates at the ending where you have to acknowledge the fact that yourself, not Conrad committed atrocities and many many deaths, your survival will cause a war and causing even more deaths.
Walker's deal with Konrad at the ending was also great. Shooting Konrad (blame the developers) or shoot yourself (blame yourself) for all that has happened.
Subtle images are seen but are not even noticed such as during the sand storms the tallest tower Burj something is actually on fire, Konrad's mug is present in many levels and the tree itself a symbol for Walker's desperation for life (turn around and the tree is dead).
Also Walker is possibly, if not the most deepest character in gaming. He may seem like a general soldier mook but look deeper and you see the real Walker.
Those hallucinations of Konrad? That is Walker's self hatred. Walker's reason for carrying on into Dubai? He wants to be a hero. Walker's transformation? War has disintegrated his mind, he isn't invicible, he is just a Human. Why does he continue? He wants to correct his mistakes and of course again, be the hero.
Konrad's face in billboards? Konrad is deep rooted in Walker's sub-conscience without even realising. His encounter with heavy Lugo? He blames himself his his death. So many details are hidden but Walker is like an actual Human, you can see him under physical stress to the point where you can see him sweating.
His motivations change from saving people to wanting revenge. Even killing unarmed civilians (by then, no one is innocent). He fails in saving the day and makes mistakes (huge ****ing mistakes) and in the end screws everyone over in Dubai and depending if he lives, possibly America.
I wish more people would acknowledge this game. If game's are 'art', Spec Ops: The Line is a masterpiece and deserves a spot in the Smithsonian.
Yes, in The Walking Dead you feel sorry for Clementine, you want to protect her, but what games makes you wanting to save the day and then it changes to you wanting to get revenge for a fallen comrade by killing un armed civilians? That is emotional involvement.
Honestly, who didn't fire their weapons into the crowd of civilians?
