I have Sten, my character (elf mage), Allister and Shale all at L14 or better and I can not even get close to killing a band of six bandits out side of the Brecillian (sp) forest and the game will not let me get past them no matter where I go except to camp.  I mean I beat all kinds of demons, werewolves, ogres and on and on and now 6 bandits have me stumped.  I am only at Normal level too.  I mean love the game but give me a g-d damned break!!

It is late and I am pissed off so any suggestions if anyone cares to read this venous rant are appreciated :-))

I suggest rest and look it over again tomorrow or put wynne in your group to heal. Without a better description I can only surmise this is a random encounter and if so should change if you reboot. If not then there must be something specific about the encounter which I have not yet experienced. Maybe a glitch really cant say without more specifics.

Hmm, what tactics have you used so far ? Is it by the way the random encounter ? I know that one can be a tad hard. Don't give up just yet though. I used to struggle through that one myself (and sometimes still do). I hope you can get the attention of the 3 with swords charging at ya and hope you have cone of cold or sleep (or something like that) so you can kill them at leisure. Chugging lotsa health poultices and pray.

You could try to lower the difficulty.

I had to do that with one encounter with darkspawn, even with wynne healing us all we got whomped like 10 times before I gave in a lowered the difficulty for that battle. Afterwards I moved it back up.

focus fire on 1 target at a time, keep your healer out of harms way, if you have the ability to use a ranged attack you should do so, while your tank should take the agro. When its over remember to thank wynne for spam healing.

I remember this, I had a lot of difficulty with this too.

I think you should have one melee character attack the three archers and the rest pf the party focus on the other three bandits. Watch out for the traps though. Likely there aren't many. Any long range area of effect damage or disabling spells you have should be focused on the archers.

You should also consider just camping and changing the party to better suit the battle.

It really depends on your party.

Team Rogue (Zev, Leli, PC-Rogue and Alistair)
Has a knack for letting the enemy concentrate on the living wall, while Leli takes care of them from afar, and Zev and PC vanish from sight to take out the enemy archers.

Morrigan's Happy Kindling Friends (PC-Mage, Morrigan, Sten, Shale)
Give their enemies the short shrift, using fire and ice, and woe to those who are "lucky" enough to make it trough to their guards.

The Fade Alliance (Morrigan, Wynne, PC-Mage, Alistair)
Has a similar tactic, though they rely more on control spells than on elemental carnage.

The Adventurers (Morrigan, Wynne, PC-Fighter, Leliana)
Uses the kind of boring but well established approach of a fighter-mage-rogue-healer setup.

The Wrecking Crew (PC-2H-Fighter, Sten, Oghren, Dog/Shale)
Has the hardest time, but confronted by their ravaging berserkerness few enemies hold their ground. The Non-Humans in this team are especially fearsome and known to stun enemies on sight.

Random encounters are just f** up. Download some user made modification to get rid of them.

I remember this fight it was a fairly difficult one but far from impossible there are some traps that don't help I had my rogue creep in and disarm the traps then acid bomb the main group, at the same time I started a fire ball from my mage. Then I delt with the sneeky ones.

Make sure you pause the action and try different tactics since your current ones obviously are not working.

Get a healer or get lots of potions...

In my two last runs I've given Morrigan the Spirit Healer specialization (Heal + Group Heal + Revival) and I've cut my poultice usage by over 75%...

If you are running two mages, give both of them the Heal spell from the Creation line and give one of them the Spirit Healer specialization and you won't use poultices except in boss fights...

If you get neither poultices nor heal spells then even the easiest bandits would kill you in no time...

Since you are a mage my strategy is to let the others deal with the melee enemies and go after the archers. Keep an eye on health status while you run up the hill to a point where the archers are lined up and hit them with your AOE spells. After this your tanks should arrive for cleanup if any still live.

I had a hard time on this encounter, too. As I recall, I beat it with AoE attacks- mage as well as bombs/ acid flasks. Mage took out the archers while we pounded our way through the melee fighters.

Taking your time and pausing, having heal spells, and using tactics instead of zerging will defeat this and 99% of the other encounters easily.

An update if you please and thanks again to all for the advice!

OK I still can't beat these bandits but I eventually died enough that the game took pity on me and sent me past them LOL, yipee!!

I licked my wounds and went on to the Urn quest and it almost kicked my ass too! I would say that I was probably at the forest too early because I barely made it out and still have not even closely beaten the Revenant in the tomb.

I am a total newb at gaming (40 years old) and I realize I just have not gotten the hang of the tactics yet. Frustrating but when I take deep breathes... fun.

Thanks again for all the advice.

Don't worry too much about it. The bandits are some of the hardest enemies you will face, believe it or not. It also gets easier at a higher level.

Should you choose to play through the game again, you will also notice that it's much easier now that you have some experience.

Your group is a mage(yourself) and 3 warrior types. Make Alister go full def(Heaviest Armor you have and put of shield wall) and taunt the bandits, have sten and the golum go scrapper to beat the crap out of them while they beat on alister. The Golum can be a good tank too but she hits harder than alister. You as a mage should have heal specd(Alister should take the majorty of the damage so use it on him everytime its up) and Mind Blast, id hope. Hit Mind Blast in the middle of them and then fry the archers with your spells(Fireball is best at taking out ranged groups). If you do have fire ball, first move would be blasting the archers with it. You should practice the fight even if the game let you past, the fight with Loghain's General in Arl Howl's manner is much harder as its like 15 enemys at once, i think 8 being armor debuffing archers. Tho if you built your characters in a bad way things will be troublsome. Alister gets Holy smite which is a nice CC at 15, should help out.

Potions. The answer is always potions.

You can beat the high dragon naked with a iron greatsword if you have enough of the right potions.

Give your mage Sleep and Waking Nightmare, it's by far the best way to deal with any amount of mobs (especially Scattershot archers who stun their allies and get aggro on themselves).

crowd control is your friend....especially at the upper levels....using spells like force field and paralyze can really equalize the encounter or make it easy.....

force field in particular is a ridiculously good spell to use offensively....at the onset of battle pause...then pick the greatest threat...be that a mini boss, mage etc...and force field him...then I usually have my mage paralyze the target of the tank...to beat him down quickly...focus fire targets...

I can't remember your encounter...but if you can force field toughest bandit at outset...then paralyze on another or use cone of cold...remember to line it up by flanking them....another option to use is rockfist to stun\\knockdown an enemy archer...or better yet winter's grasp followed by rockfist for a shatter\\instant kill....

You can also use horror to put another bandit out of play for a little bit as well....

Seriously, thanks again to all for the fantastic tips. I do find the intricacies of battle planning almost too much to comprehend at this time but I guess repetition (and this forum) are the keys to success.

Special thanks to Forsaken Rogue and Psychoeva2!
