I am playing a mage, so I really do not care about the Star Metal Swords for my own character.  It seems the only PC's who use longsword/2 hander is Alistair and Sten.  Sten's quest makes it sound liek once I find his lost sword he will use no other weapon in the game, so making a two hander would be a waste.  On the other hand I normally do not adventure with Alistair as he complains too much and is not very effective in combat.  I prefer Sten and Shale with Liliana or Wynne.  Based on this, which version of the sword should I craft?

Well, Sten's sword is not worth using throughout the game. It's pretty low level. Nice to use as a gift, and use in the lower levels. But pretty soon not good enough. It's only tier 3, I think. Starfang is tier 7 and has way better stats.

It's no good to Leliana, can't make daggers. However, if either your mage or Wynne is going to go Arcane Warrior, get the longsword and use that. My money would be on a 2-hander for Sten, if you don't want to give it to Alistair.

I don't really see why Alistair is "not very effective" in combat. But that's not the point here, I guess.

Anyway, as for Starfang, it doesn't really matter that much. Starfang is extremely good but in the long run, Keening Blade and the Chasind Maul are almost just as good (the Maul is actually even better, if you ask me). Since you can get other decent 2h-swords (Yusaris, Ageless) quite early, I'd go for the 1h Starfang.

the one-handed starfang is incredibly ugly, if you care about that. but i think the two-handed starfang is easily the best weapon in the game... and sten's weapon is only steel, even if it has good enchantments...

All good points, thanks you. As to Alistair's poor combat performance, he does little damage, draws little agro, and cannot take much more of a hit than Sten even with shield wall. I am certain I am not playing him well, I do not know the build path at all for him to be effective.

Well, there are threads that deal with how to build a tank. Or you could post a thread on how to set up Alistair for best use. His job is not to do major damage - tanks don't if they're built properly. He'll do some damage, but not lots. It's to gain and hold aggro, and survive (if possible) long enough for his teammates to kill the boogers.

Shield wall is key. Taunt to gain aggro, threat to help hold it (won't gain it though). Massive armor to help gain and hold aggro too - so no-one else should have a higher armor rating than him or they'll draw off the aggro. Enough strength to get the tier 7 massive - 42 from memory. Almost everything else into dex for the extra defense. There is some difference of opinion as to the usefulness of constitution and willpower, but little (if any) need go there. For a more details check the builds forum. There's good info there. Alistair is a very good tank if built and used correctly. Shale is also great in that function.

SO, total non-sequitur here, but by crafting a weapon out of star metal, does this simply make the enemies disappear and return to their own dimension rather than cut them up in bloody fashion? What happens when you hit Thoth-Amon with them?

My next play through will be a mage with the Arcane Warrior specialization. I plan on using Starfang myself. That may be an option for you, turning your mage into an Arcane Warrior.

The alternatives for dual wield melee or weapon and shield melee character offer more for their respective character builds vs. the one hand starfang than the two hand alternatives offer a two hand melee character vs. the two hand starfang. For this reason I always use the metal to craft a two hand weapon.

I've not done anything with this as I don't have the required DLC I don't think, but I'm guessing by the above that you do not have the option to pick the style of sword? ie. Dalish, Dwarven, etc. ?

that's right, you don't get a choice. the unofficial dragon age wiki has a picture... http://dragonage.wik...ang_(Longsword) (caution, spoiler)

Good luck in geting that (rare) random encounter again Kerad Posted Image
It took me 6 plays (3 unfinished / 3 finished) before I got that encounter. Wish I had it during my play with the AW. But it's a good point there, there are (more) good alternatives for one handed weapon users.
Sten's sword (Asala) is indeed steel, and gets old pretty quick I guess.
I think it's more fun if you have him in the group to replace Asala witha 2h Starfang.
Starfang has more runeslots then Asala too, I believe. Alistaire does a pretty decent job tanking (though I must admit, he does seem to drop the ball every now and then) Posted Image
But I understand why you would do that. Asala is indeed hi most prized possession (I felt the same way). time I'm still gonna take away Asala and equip him with a better 2hander, he has to move on and improve himself.

Have fun ! Posted Image

I've made the 1H sword twice now. Seeing that the Keeining Blade and Topsider, even a Dragon Bone Saw Sword, and a few of the War Axes are decent, I will be making a 2H Starfang next time. Sten deserves a better sword.

Heh I got that encounter on something like my 12th playthrough. The amusing thing is that I don't have the DLC thingy.
