For what at first sounded like a very delicious movie turned out to be something totally different. The film starts when Piscene, or Piscine, or Pisceen, or something like that, talks about how he shortened his name to Pi. Then it tells you some more important backstory, and then it moves on with the actual story. The story is that Pi, a teenager, is the lone survivor of a shipwreck, along with a tiger. Two-thirds of the film is literally spent on a lifeboat. Sounds boring, right? Not at all! The entire film is acually quite well done and exciting. Ang Lee did a good job with this one. It's well directed, is very fun, and I found it very touching at moments. If you're religious, I feel you would have a better time with this film than an atheist or an agnostic leaning more toward atheist. The story-within-a-story is described as an off-screen character that will make you believe in God, but Pi himself says that in the end, you can decide for yourself what to believe, and I feel that's very true with this movie. It doesn't go with any "GOD'S REAL AND YOU KNOW IT" crap. It leaves it open to the audience, and I feel that was very well done.
NOW FOR THE RATINGS:
Story and Plot: 8/10... The story was very well-executed, and it was a very thought-provoking story overall. The little things about how things were was quite simply awesome. It was also very open-minded in the religious (or non-religious) aspects, and that was awesome. The ending was a bit cheesy, though, but it still is a pretty good ending.
Characters: 7/10... The characters were very fun and likeable. There were a few things I didn't like with the more minor characters. I really liked the tiger, but the father was stern, the mother was nicer, the brother was michievous... and so on; there were a few clichés in characters. But going too far into it would really be nitpicking, so I won't.
Acting: 8/10... The acting was quite believable. I really love how big names were ditched in favor of better acting. Not to mention that actual Indians play the Indians. Actual Japanese people play Japanese people. You don't have a big-name American that kind of looks Indian and can do an okay Indian accent play an Indian. Which is great. I loved that.
Visual Effects: 8/10... The special effects in the movie were very good. The animals that were CGI'd moved, behaved, and looked much like real animals, though they all still had that CGI "fake" look. Unfortunately, I can't judge the 3D, since I saw it in 2D thanks to the nonexistence of 3D matinees. Most everything looks good enough, and you'll hear no complaints from me. The makeup and clothing was also very good.
Just a little something I think I'll tell you. In my rating system, I don't give an overall rating. I just give you the facts and individual ratings and let you decide for yourself what is more important. That's my review of 'Life of Pi'. Don't forget to review my review, okay?
