I can't do anything on the site when I use IE8 as it doesn't keep me logged in. I've cleared
cookies but it did not help. Anytime I do ANYTHING on the site, it asks me to
log in again. The site is non functional when I use IE8. I have tried 4
times to make this post but everytime I hit post, it kicks me out again and
I need to log in which clears the whole post. I just switched over to Firefox which works fine, allowing me to actually make this post. I couldn't even post using IE.

I had a similar issue the other day using Opera, but a restart of Opera fixed it.

Maybe check your cookie authorization settings with IE, either in global settings or "bioware.com" custom cookie settings ?

Thanks for the tips guys. Supposedly it may have something to do with the "remember me" button being checked. Haven't tried that yet to see if it fixes it. I do use Firefox 90% of the time but once in awhile I do use IE8. Other people are having the problem as there is a thread below mine with about 15 posts in it.

Good luck.

I've been waiting since the game launch for the website to remember my login beyond more than one or two pages. All I ever see are BW web guru's passing it off as an IE8 thing when I am using Firefox/Win7-64 and or Safari/IpodTouch and it happens on both platforms.

Very frustrating.  :(

Well I don't use IE8 so I don't know exactly where the option is,
but in the Internet Options panel
you should see something like a Confidentiality tab
then a [settings] or [parameters] button which will allow to choose how IE will accept or refuse cookies.

Also when you visit the Bioware forums, look at the bottom right of the IE windows (left of the zoom setting) to check if you see a little "forbidden red sign" icon. If yes that means IE has blocked cookies, then right click on the icon and you change the cookie setting for the forums

Nope, I looked in the Internet Options & found no Confidentiality Tab. Is this bad news?

Cookies are fine and not blocked. Even if it was strictly an IE8 thing, why are the bioware guys not using IE8 to debug it?

I've heard other people suggest that there's a "logout.php" call in some people's signatures, so that when you read their post it erases your cookie. The solution for that is to:

1) Ban those users
2) Upgrade your code to treat ".php" as profanity and replace it with garbage so that scripts cant run from messages/signatures.

Will this post work? Who knows??

I've nearly stopped coming to this site because half the time I can't respond.  Bioware should be seriously concerned that all of their man-hours regarding the social site construction could go to waste as people conclude that the site isn't worth their trouble.

We are trying to get to the bottom of this bug but have had a lot of trouble reproducing it.

Can someone who is having this issue confirm/contradict if unchecking the "Remember Me" box when logging in causes them not to be constantly logged out?

@Koralis: It is possible to create a link in your signature that would take you to "logout.php" but someone would need to click on the link to be logged out.

Ironically, at this moment it's fine. And at the point where there's a problem I won't be able to post anything. You may want to send me an email address and I'll let you know what I see the next time it happens.

I've wondered if there's a mechanism whereby the site tries to validate the cookie with a login server and if the login server has a glitch and doesn't return a positive result it logs you out/deletes a cookie.

Many thanks! Image IPB This did it. It was previously set to medium high, now it's high. I'm gonna try to add this social site to a trusted list & see if it helps.

Jeff, first: thanks for saying you're still working on this. I feel a little less aggravated by that reassurance.

Second, in my case at least, checking or unchecking the remember me box makes absolutely no difference.

As I have stated elsewhere, if you want any specific information from my firefox/win7-64 system, or my safari/ipod touch system, let me know and I'll get it to you.

Thanks,
Craig

I can confirm it.  I spent 15 minutes trying to register my game, and getting shunted back to the log-in screen over and over again.  Unchecking the "Remember Me" button when I logged in yet again (after reading this thread) made the problem go away, and I was able to register without any problems.

Windows 7/IE8 - no cookies blocked or other security/privacy warnings in IE.

TEST

There goes that idea... I've recently experianced IE8 (my wife has reported similar on firefox) losing access to the "Back" button, and several items in the "Tools" menu being greyed out.  I'm posting/updating from a browser in this situation right now... still working.  Bah.

Still, here's the link talking about it for reference... maybe somehow related.

One suggestion I saw was that it had something to do with the Java update 17.  I just disabled that java helper browser object and we'll see if it changes anything going forward.

Thanks for the confirmation that unchecking "Remember Me" works for some people.

@Craig: Does the logging out issue happen to you constantly or intermittently? Is your Safari/ipod touch on a wifi network, and if it is have you tried it on a different wifi network?

Thanks for the followup question.

It happens almost constantly. There are rare occasions where I might string together 4 or 5 page-change clicks without having to log in again. But then there are occasions where every single page change I make I'm logged out when I see the new page.

Any search I do logs me out when I submit the query.

I can never do a quick reply as I'm logged out seemingly at the same time that the form submits the data, even if I wan viewing the thread, logged in, and then used the quick reply.

I can usually make a post on the standard form though: although to do so I have to go to the form via the link and re-login from there.

To edit a post I've made can take, no exageration, 10 - 15 attempts. I apologize in absentia for the language you may hear at those times.

I've tried deleting all cookies from social and original bioware sites in case their was some kind of cookie clash between them. I've tried deleting my cache and history, closing the browser completely, and trying again from scratch without any change.

As for the ipod/safari situation: yes, I'm on my home wi-fi network as there is no way to connect an ipod to the web via wires. I have NOT yet tried to connect to the social site from another wi-fi network though. My ISP is hughes net (satellite) and consequently has a fairly high latency for the connection. Could this be causing the glitch? I note that this is the only forum where this problem has ever occurred for me. The old bioware forums worked fine on this ISP so I would be surprised if this were the issue. On the other hand, I've done some php-web work myself and I shudder to imagine the complexity of this site for you guys to debug. If you would like a rundown of specific cookies/values/expiration times in particular cicumstances etc, let know and I'll do my best to provide it for you.

One oddity: When I visit the toolset wiki I log in seemingly with the same login page here at the social site. But when I get logged out by the forums, I still seem to be logged in ok at the wiki. Not sure if this helps or is another red herring?

I really want to get this issue resolved as I plan to someday make my own mod and being a positive contributor and part of the community. This does make it hard to participate without a lot of frustration as I'm sure you understand.

Thanks for still working on this!

Well, If I use IE7, I also get logged out randomly. I just don't care anymore relogging quickly. It can be isolated or few times in a row, sometimes nothing will happen even if the browsing forum intensivly.

Jeff,

I tried using IE8 on my home computer also and I experience the same issue. It may even be worse as I couldn't get the login to persist at all. I can sometimes get 3 or 4 clicks in on firefox.

So, I tested the loging from my work computer (xp/IE7) and hallelujah...the login works fine on that machine! Maybe it is a win7-64 bit issue?  Next test: on my wife's xp sp3 computer using firefox. Crap on a blanket! The same damned issue.

So: the ONLY thing my home computers/ipod have in common is my ISP. Hughes Net. But I only get this problem on the social forums, no other websites are affected similarly.

So...could a high-latency connection somehow be causing this problem? If I could I'd switch to DSL but I live in the boondocks (apprently) and satellite is all we got aside from dialup.

I'm flying to California on Wednesday: I'll take my ipod along and see if I can loging with it on the public wifi at the airport and see f the problem goes away.

Hope it helps.

Craig,

Thanks for the info.  That's a good idea to test out.  Could you please ping social.bioware.com and tell me the min, max and average round trip times?

Following are instructions how to do this in Windows:
  • open a Command Prompt (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt)
  • type: ping social.bioware.com
  • then record the numbers next to Minimum, Maximum and Average and post them here when you can login again

Anyone who is constantly being logged out when "Remember Me" is NOT checked off.  During one of these periods of being constantly logged out could you please record your ping times and post them along with your ISPs company name.

I do not have your problem but I have noticed regular spikes in network activity when I'm on this site, active or idle. I have not seen that behaviour anywhere else. I figured it was a JS thing for real-time updates.

[Edit]
Regular as in clock-work regular.

Progress update: After changing my Cookie Blocker settings to 'High', & adding this site to my 'Trusted' list, (your welcome Bioware! Image IPB) My log-in loss has slowed down a bit, but not stopped. Could there be a bug in the Bioware cookie code?
