I'm using my iPod at the public access wifi at the airport and the login issues are magically better.
This is the same iPod that cannot remember my login at home where my ISP is Hughes net. So, it looks as if the issue is the combination of the social site plus Hughes net. (at least in my case)
I would be interested to know if anyone else here uses a satellite ISP and whether they have similar issues. In any case, I suspect I have likely relegated myself to having to live with the issue as there won't be many others that use Hughes net to access the site and the web folks are going to focus on the bugs that affect the most people.
In case I'm wrong, I won't be back home til next week if you need more information Jeff.
Thanks for trying to help

EDIT: I've clicked through about 10 pages and not been logged out so far, made this post with the Quick Reply feature and, fingers crossed, I'll just now have successfully edited it.

I've been test-driving Firefox lately, & I think it's defeated IE8 in utility.SkullandBonesmember wrote...
Just some friendly advice, there's a lot of security issues with IE. You'd be better off using Opera or Firefox.
Initially, during Firefox testing, I had to log-in everytime I came to this Site, so I messed with the Options Settings. I discovered that there was a cookie setting that dealt with how long to keep cookies. It's default setting turned out to be 'until browser closed' or something like that. I changed the setting to 'until they expire', & my prior IE8 log-in problems have vanished, never to be seen again!
Firefox also has superiority in other Interface aspects. Try it out!
Firefox 3.6! Look for it on the right.
Almost forgot, Firefox has a natural Spell Checker. It's not omnipotent, but it's handy.

IE7 worked just fine at first, but at some point I started getting session error messages in Simple Machine Forums, BioWare's community site (as well as the SWTOR site) started logging me out at random, and certain functionality over at The Escapist's forums also stopped working properly.
Upgrading to IE8 changed nothing, and the supposed fixes for the problem on the SMF forums didn't do anything either, but I still have dozens of other forums that perform flawlessly, so it's hard to say whose fault it is.

I'm on FIOS... previously comcast broadband. There's no blaming of satellite uplinks here.

I have to use IE8 64 bit now when trying to post on the forums because 32-bit seems to log me off all the time.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit...most people seem to have Windows 7 and are experiencing this problem?

For whatever it's worth, it's strictly a forum problem for me. When I am elsewhere on this site - like posting in social groups using the same account - the problem is utterly nonexistent. I am never logged out.

This looks interesting... Could IE8 be clashing with Anti-Virus code? Maybe Anti-Virus should be brought into the Spec info equation?NYeriq wrote...
I have this problem too. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit, IE8 32-bit... When I turn protected mode off, I'm able to stay logged in but once I turn it back on again, the problem shows up again.

IE8's Protected Mode is not an anti-virus. It's IE's built-in sandbox (for security) and this is defaulted to "ON" unless you turn off Windows Vista/7's User Account Control.

I never knew IE8 had a Protected Mode. I always use the Protected Mode from my anti-virus Site Advisor. (McAfee)NYeriq wrote...

I wonder if Protected Modes from 2 sources at once can clash with each other?
