Hello, I just got BG enhanced edition, I've been waiting for it to come out to finally play BG.
Problem is, I've never been good at building good characters.
For exemple: I allwaise auto level up in KOTOR 1 and 2. I play DAO on normal and find bosses incredibly hard, had to switch to easy from time to time.
I know I know, I'm not very good

I wanted to play a bard class, or a class that uses a bow. I don't want to play a warrior class. I could play a mage class but I never got why I can only use a spell just once.

I'm asking you "oh great rpg masters" to help me in this dificult quest.:wizard:

I would not mind playing:

- A bard
- A mage
- A ranger
- A thief
- Clerc

I'm planning on maybe playing any evil (don't mind lawful or not)
But even there I don't know. I don't know the game at all. Can you please give me advice?
It really bugs me to pick a alignement from the start.

In mass effect I play renegade and love it.
In kotor 1 and 2 I play dark side but won't kill team mates, I hate hurting them or having them hate me.
In Jade Empire I'm evil
In DAO and 2 I like "****" good guys.
In Planescape torment I can't play evil...

Do you have any sugestions on alignement or class?
I'm really looking foward to your answers:D

Thank you for your time.

PS: My spelling might be really bad, I'm French and I'm still learning English. I'm trying to do my best.;)

Much love all<3

Well, a Sorcerer uses fewer spells multiple times. But it does force you to study the manual to pick out what you want to use before you've actually played the game. Image IPB
A bard/skald can use a Bow . There are some really useful short bows in BG2.The Archer subkit allows you to use a bow as a melee weapon, but you said you don't want to play as a fighter.
Alignment isn't as important in the BGs as in later games. Your Party reputation is more important than your initial alignment in determing how other NPCs react to you and what prices you pay in stores. On a scale of 1 to 20, you don't want your Rep going below 7. If you rob too many widows and orphans, give money to a Temple to drag your Rep out of the gutter. And at 19 or 20 you will have a BIG problem with your evil NPCs. If you are a determined Evil player, look to pick up Edwin, Korgan and Viconia - particularly Viconia - as the core of your Party.
On a first run, remember to push the quick save button ("Q") early and often. Image IPB

First question is whether you plan to run a full group, and if so do you know who to take? This is the spoilers forum so we can advise you who to take if you want, or not, as you prefer.

There is a canonical evil group to be had, which is short only a thief, so I would suggest you roll up one of the various types of thief as PC, and if you do this then it makes sense to choose halfling as race for the saving throw and dexterity bonuses. Possible builds are straight thief, assassin, swashbuckler, bounty hunter, or (my personal favorite) multiclass fighter/thief.

All thieves can use bows, but where they shine is backstabbing. In BG this is fairly restricted, you need to use a melee weapon, you need to be hidden / invisible, and you need to be behind your target. Oh and the weapon has to be usable by a vanilla thief, so no 2-handed swords, halberds, spears, flails, maces, or clubs. Nevertheless it is worth the trouble. Long swords are good throughout the game, and there is a great katana for SoA.

Thank you both morbidest and Potty for the answers, they are very helpful, I think I'm going to rule out the mage classes and start with either a Thief or a bard.
So between a Bard with a bow or a backstabbing Thief do you have any suggestions?
As For Alignment I'm maybe going to start with Chaotic neutral.

Are you going to Start in BG, or with BG2? That is a major issue, since muscle and ranged weapons are more important in BG than BG2/SoA and ToB. Assuming you want to start at the beginning, I would consider bard/skald, since it has a little bit of everything and could give you more of the flavor of the game on even the first run. You have to be invisible to backstab, and it takes a while for your mages to get to the point where they can cast that spell on you frequently. I would advise a full group of 6 -with a mix of melee, ranged weapon fighters, clerics, mages, druids and thiefly abilities - on your first run and to play at the Easy level (enemies do half damage) - it's a tougher game than DAO and death is frequent. If you are going to play neutral in a serious role playing campaign - but there's little in the game to force you to be a serious roleplayer - Imoen, Kiven, Minsc (and Boo, his pet Space Hamster), Browen, Jaheira and Yeslick , are very useful NPCs.

I never liked bows, firstly because you are always removed from the action. To me it just doesn't feel satisfying playing as an archer. Secondly, I don't like having to worry about arrows. This is just a personal preference though, it might suit you better.

As for alignment, as others said it makes very little difference. If I recall correctly it just is a slight once-off modifier to your reputation: base value for rep is 10, Lawful good starts off as 12 or so, while chaotic evil starts off as 8. This difference is very small compared to the number of times your actions will alter your reputation.

You can backstab with clubs.

OP mentions BG:EE so I'm assuming right from the start (as it should be!). I can't speak to the effectiveness of Bard of Bard/Skald as a PC choice, but [spoiler alert] Garrick may have just jaded me somewhat (for some bizarre reason I think he ended up coming all the way through with me in my first ever run way back when, as I had somehow got Minsc but not Dynaheir).

I do quite like thieves though, and am half-way through an enjoyable solo run with one. If you're planning on playing evil then you might not want Imoen around so a thief PC would fit right in. Another thought would be Blackgaurd, as the other thing you will miss out on by being evil is having a regular Paladin, so it's worth thinking about.

I still think that a Skald would fit the OP's wishlist almost perfectly:
1-he doesn't want to be a fighter, but wants to use a bow. Without too much trouble you can roll an 85 total on ability scores for a human Skald, which gives you a good all-around PC
2-he is a magic user
3-His battlesong is a SIGNIFICANT help to his party right from the start in BG1
4-He is enough of a rogue that his pickpocket skill can be brought alone nicely throughout BG1/SoA
Garrick, of course, is a deliberate joke, but the Bard class can be very be a very powerful F/M, with a little bit of thief thrown in. Some people even use a Blade, like Heir Delis, as a ToB tank!

Thank you all for you very helpful answers. I Think I'm going to start a Skald.
I'm glad to see that the BG community is still strong and so willing to help new commers!!!
I'll get going then, I might have some other questions along the road! :o

Be careful being evil. Your reputation can drop easily, and that not only makes you pay higher prices for goods, but also can result in guards attacking you.

I would recommend against playing evil on your first playthrough. BG games don't support evil nearly as good as eg. ME games do. Mostly you will just be screwing yourself out of quests and rewards and then hunted by guards, especially since you don't how to avoid that yet.

Playing chaotic (chaotic good or chaotic neutral) seem to be my favorite alignment choices. They tend to give you the most freedom in what you do in the world if you are trying to roleplay your alignment accurately. Like others suggested, you'd best leave evil for an alternate play.

A party consisting of good berserker protagonist, aerie, haerdalis, jaheira, imoen and minsc....without any happy mods, which reputation would be best ? Since you get it high pretty fast i plan to use slayer once or twice to get it down to the point where everyone will be happy. That means without haerdalis and jaheira crying too much.

Welcome to the bliss that is Baldurs Gate (and BG2). It is an amazing role play experience. Be prepared to waste many hours frustrated by how hard it was at first and how easy it is once you learn the tactical edge. Be prepared to be drawn into the challenge and the reward of a successful mission or even a +1 sword :)

You mentioned general unfamiliarity with D&D rules - I think - and BG EE (your edition) still uses some of the most most complex arcane rules of any Role Playing Game ever made. There is a reason I was called a D&D geek in my day. The magic system in particular is unlike most MMORPG or other games in the sense you don't have a "mana or energy level" that recharges - and the spells special effects all have limited advantages in certain situations.

My suggestion will be a bit counter intuitive: Dont play a Mage / Bard / Primary magical character!

1) Play a Paladin - a holy warrior of justice - use a "2 handed great sword" or "sword and shield" or
2) Play a Ranger but use one weapon in each hand of the same type...i.e. Long swords and put "skill points" into two weapon fighting every time you can.
3) Both classes will expose you - eventually - to the complex magic system that is D&D 2.0 and you will get to tinker with magic spells especially before big fights... finally....
4) Don't rush into every fight. Use Bow and arrows, or Magic from NPCs to draw enemies to you. Use corners and obstacles to minimize flanking attacks against your party. When you identify the "boss" in "this fight" immediately use your primary character to overwhelm and defeat them.

Hope these suggestions find you well into the fun that you will find BGEE
