I have a question, i modded ME2 but i think it doesn't work. How can i do to force the games to use 4k textures ?

Maybe a tweak in the .ini file ?

EDIT : It's okay, i found the problem.

I am attempting to mod the ME2 textures for NPCs and squad (avoiding Texplorer).  Is this possible and is there a quick guide to doing it?  I have ME3Explorer and the mods I want to use.  Sorry if it is here, somewhere, but searching this forum stinks.

Or...maybe there is no way to do this without using Texmod, presently?

Ok, for those that are having trouble modding ME2, I'll write here what I told Jezehbell:

Ok, so what you HAVE to do first is make a back up copy of your Mass Effect 2 files in your "My Documents" folder and your "CookedPC" folder that is in your BioGame folder. If something wrong happens you can just replace your Mass Effect 2 files in the "My Documents" folder and the "CookedPC" folder and that way you won't have to redownload the game.

Second, as an example, Jack's "suit" is on "BIOG_HMF_JCK_LGT_R", the first folder being her normal suit and the second being her loyalty suit. After that you just change the proprieties as always and then you just "Add biggest image". And if you are looking for her face, it's on "PROJack", and then on the "Promo" folder. After you add biggest image, you have to save the changes AND THEN you have to "Remove Null Pointers".

Let me know if you're still having any problems.

Awesome.  I guess I am a noob, though.  So, I fired up ME2Explorer and found the PCC files list in the CookedPC folder.  Is there a list of the squad armors or are they all the same format?

Also, not seeing Jack's folders or PCC files.  So, maybe I am in need of a step by step tutorial, if one exists.  I am very PC literate but not so much with modding.  Is there a site that helps with this?  Maybe a FAQ somewhere?  I am not expecting you to teach me ME2explorer.

Eh, don't worry, I was even worse off than you when I started. :P And let me just say beforehand that Mass Effect 2 is the hardest game of the trilogy to mod, by far. So don't be surprised if something goes wrong even though you're doing everything well, just remember to have those backup files.

Anyway, what you have to do when you first start ME2Explorer is, go to Texplorer, then start multi-file mode and THEN you can replace the textures.

Appreciate it. It is running it's first file check. Is there a list of which files are for which squadmate? Or are they all as easy as Jack's to recognize?

Well, there are some that are easy to recognize and other that aren't as much. But you'll find most of them under the "BIOG_ ..." files.

And, finally, my last few questions...

1) There is a Diff, Norm, Spec and SpecPwr file under each folder. Which am I focusing on?
2) You said "change properties as usual" what does that mean?
3) I have the Texmod TPF files. Is there a decent repository for the DDS files I would need to use?

EDIT **  You have been a huge help!  Would buy you a beer if I could!

No problem mate, as I said, I was exactly in the same situation as you so I understand that it's pretty difficult to mod it if you don't know what to do.

Anyway, about your questions, they're all covered in this great video saltisgood did (). It's for ME3 but the process is pretty much identical for ME2.

EDIT: Also in the video he just switched the diff file but I recommend you switch the spec file as well (the spec texture isn't essential but it gives better lighting to the character, so why not switch it?). I'd also tell you to switch the norm file as well but for ME2 and ME3 I don't think you can do that yet, so don't bother.

I just (hopefully) modded Ashley's skin in the romance scene in my own game.  I haven't tested it yet but the mods were created successfully and supposedly installed correctly.  I also created a new normal map and specular map to go with it but will have to wait to see if it borked the game or renders properly.

I had a hell of a time finding the image for that scene.  There are lists of faces and uniform images at the ME3Explorer website but I could never find any listing of such as Ashley's t-shirt or the romance scene skin.  Ultimately, where it resides (BIOG or elsewhere) depends on which part of ME3Explorer you are using.  In the Asset Explorer you will find most (not all) under BIOG_ but in Texplorer you will find them elsewhere.  I found the Ashley textures I wanted in BIOD_ and had to do a LOT of searching.

I used GIMP to do all the main work and then had to use DirectX SDK to tweak the normal map.  I'm also now trying to figure out how to use Blender for this too but DAMN that is a rough interface to grapple with.  I found 2 texture creation tutorials for it but one was for an older version of Blender so the interface and controls are almost totally different now, while the other assumed you knew how to get to various texture-related screens - NOT in any way obvious or easy.

I'm also now trying to edit the body mesh for Ashley (in uniform) in Blender. See if I can then put it back into the game. I'm reducing her ass size to make it less...bulbous (all the female characters in-game have fairly large asses). It's like the game is Mass Effect: Baby Got Back.

Ha...agreed.  But, unfortunately, I do not have the time or energy to go as far as to make my own textures.  I was hoping to utilize the efforts and artistic ability of those more adventurous types around here!  (60 hour job plus young kids means no time to figit with this stuff)

So, if I have to create my own, I will stick with Texmod, for now.  Unless Mr. Saltisgood ever gets his auto installer to work with ME2.  Posted Image

EDIT **   Nevermind...found the TPFExtract program...will see what kind of damage I can cause.

EDIT2 **  You know, it is always something.  I got the TPF files extracted but Windows 7 doesn't preview DDS files by default.  Downloaded a program to do that and it can't see the 4096 texture files.  Found the ones I wanted in ME2Explorer and it claims there are "no mipmaps"  lol.  I give up.

I have GIMP installed and there is a dds importer/exporter addon.  It sees 4096 just fine.

I've finished giving Ashley a butt reduction in Blender.  What a pain.  Now to try and get it back into the game.

The Microsoft Directx package is really good for this.  You can also change the format properly (nvidia has issues with normals) and generate mipmaps, all on top of seeing thumbnails :)

EDIT: About my environment texture problem, I have now confirmed that it's not a LOD issue.  The texture is certaintly not being replaced.  I don't know where the game is getting the originals from. I sure can't find them.

When you want to add a texture, you will always have to convert  that image to the same properties as the original texture AND it always has to have all the miplevels which means you have always change it from, for exemple 1 (4096x4096) to 13 (1x1) .

Yeah, I have the DirectX SDK.  I am still having issues seeing thumbnails.  I will have to keep playing around if time permits.  Thanks guys!

You know, I understand it is fun to tweak, but Texmod does just work.  LOL.

Alrighty. I'm confused. I can't run the installer. I'm not new to modding in general, but still fresh in the modding of Mass Effect as a whole.I really want these textures, but I'm totally lost. Can anybody help?

I've downloaded the Texture Packs 1 and 2, as well as ME3 HR Project MK2 Beta V1. Unloaded everything where it says to. Norton keeps deleting files(some, not all) from the Beta folder, saying they're not safe... Could that be my issue?

EDIT:
*snip*

EDIT 2:
So~

Finally got to unquarantine those files and tada! It works :) Well, almost. Still downloading. Man does the installer take a lot of CPU power!

Thanks for the awesome textures ^_^

...If you have a look at this post AmaroK's cracked the TOC.bin structure and we can now add new files to it. Hence we can add all the tfcs we want for a theoretically unlimited amount of textures. Nice work AK.

thanks ^_^

So... I made many tries to modd ME2 and the game crashes if you change textures of Legion, Thane and Garrus.

So, if you want to add better textures, don't touch them.

Actually, Thane worked fine for me... Try to mod him again, but not Legion or Garrus.
