So I JUST started playing this game.  I started a mage got to lvl 7 got shapeshifting and INSTANTLY regretted it.  What a waste.  So I jumped on the forums and started reading and the game sounds really good.  I played many mmorpgs in my time so the skills/talents/abilities arent to hard to figure out.   On my first play through I missed the rogue chick in Loethering or w/e.  This time through I grabbed her and now I just arrived at camp.  Im lvl 7 along with my other 3 party members who are, Alistar(my tank) Rogue Chick(ranged dps, I chose ranged becuz of friendly fire, ima AoE nut) and Morrigan(caster dps).   I have the dog and the murderer from the cage in loethering but I dislike them both.   Now like I said I skimmed thru the forums trying to avoid spoilers but give myself some general knowledge of the game.  My plan from here is to get that Wrynn mage from the tower and make her a Red Mage(FF reference :P) Healer/Supporter/CCer in place of Morrigan.  So I'll be running with  Alistar-Tank, Rogue chick-range dps, Wrynn-healer/supporter/ccer, and myself Mage (caster dps)
My questions are..
1. Am I heading in the right direction as far as group composition?
2. As far as quests are concerned, if I complete the main quests for a city, can I leave, progress the main story line, then return later to finish side quests?
3. Does the path I take from the camp matter, should I go to a certain place first?
4. Im level 7 and have 1 point for a special talent but all I have unlocked atm is SShifter -.-  I was thinking BM and then SH just for the passive bonus.  <----Good idea?
5. What happens when you beat the game?  Start another playthrough, or can you do other things once youve beaten the game.
6. Im playing offline on PS3...whats different if I play online?
7. AND THIS IS THE BIG ONE, are there events along the way that I can MISS and lose out on something IMPORTANT, then not be able to return to achieve that something.

Thanks ahead of time, sorry for the mispelled/forgotten names of characters.  Like I said I jsut started :)

The beautiful thing about RPG's is that the good ones are non linear to a point. If you think about what that means, you'll realise that what you do is all good IF it works for you. There's no right or wrong way to play, and one party may not be inherantly better than some other way. You said you tried to avoid spoilers in the forums but really all your questions are asking for spoilers of a different type. LOL.

As far as playing online- you are.

I am not an expert, I just play for fun but imo:

1. There is no "right" group composition, most people think that more mages = easier game; but imo it all depends how you set them. If you want to play classic tank/healer/dps trinity then your group is fine. But you can play almost anything else and do just as fine as well.
Btw, I use respec mod and find it a really great help.

2. Once you leave Lothering you can go wherever you want, just mind that some zones like Orzammar and Denerim back alleys may be bit hard for lower level.

3. Basically no, it doesnt matter, most people go straight for the Circle to pick Wynne. Personally I use Morrigan as a healer so I prefer going Denerim, DLC and elves route first. Circle gives you some boost to abilities too.

4. It all depends on what you want and what your playstyle is. I personally take SH/AW on Morrigan and BM/AW on my mage (when I play mage), but I like the looks of massive armor on my characters. It all works (apart from shapeshifter but you found that out already).

5. Once you finish the game its end. You can play again with new class/gender/whatever. I am on my 11th playthrough, trying to do NM without much pausing and still having a blast.

6. I play on PC and am always online. The only advantage I see in playing online is that I have access to DLC.

7. I dont think you can miss on anything much if you take care to read the dialogues/quests carefully. And there is always a save/reload option. The game is pretty big so I wouldnt expect to do just everything in one playthrough but if you are set on that there are lot of walkthroughs on the internet where you can check particular zone or quest and see if you missed anything.

1. Group composition matters not. Can finish the game with any composition, its up to your and your play style or which companions you like.

2. Yes (to an extent)

3. Matters not, but the way level scaling works, the optimum route would be circle tower, redcliffe, brecelian forest, haven, orzzamor.

4. There are optimum specialisations, but for a first ply through, get what you think you will like, and always take them both, even if you dont use one, the stat bonus is nice.

5. Yes start anew with a diff class, diff companions, diff play style etc. You end up (sort of) back at camp so you can then do DLC with that character (companions - to an extent).

6. None, need to play online for DLC, and for your achievemtns and profile to be updated to this site.

7. Yes, but not many.

There you go, tried to be helful but not give you any info that could/will spoil it for you :)

I think the others covered just about everything.

But Blood Mage can only be unlocked in one particular place, by making particular choices, by a mage pc, and if you don't want to mess it up you may want to get the details - despite spoilers. Spirit Healer you can learn from a particular companion or buy a tome. Arcane Warrior is like Blood Mage - you can only get it in one particular place (but it's less tricky since any pc can learn it, whatever their class). I'd save the point, Shapeshifter just plain sucks.

After Lothering I always do the Mage Tower first - to get Wynne, and to get the 21 attribute point bonuses. I won't give any spoilers, but do be aware that once you enter the tower itself (not the entry hall, but through the next set of doors) you will be there until the whole quest is completed. So stock up, get rid of what you don't need or want (inventory space), and make sure you're ready for the long haul.

Shapeshifting will likely be more useful after the next patch. It's currently bugged; the strength of what you shift into is supposed to be determined by your spell power, but is instead determined by your strength.

1. Am I heading in the right direction as far as group composition?

As it's been said before, there's really no wrong way to go about this. When I'm playing a non-Rogue hero, I like to go with Alistair as my tank, Wynne as my healer, and Lelianna as my ranged-attacker/lock-picker -- (but part of that is related to the moral fiber of my character as well). The effectiveness of who you have in your party is soley determined by your strategy in the game and how you level them up.

2. As far as quests are concerned, if I complete the main quests for a city, can I leave, progress the main story line, then return later to finish side quests?

Yes, but there are exceptions. If you don't want spoilers I can't give you specifics, but essentially, whenever you finish the "major quest" of any area/city, you can normally go back to start or finish side-quests related to that area.

3. Does the path I take from the camp matter, should I go to a certain place first?

(I assume you're talking about being at the party camp for the first time after leaving Lothering, if so:) Not really. I normally go to the Circle Tower first for three reasons: 1) Wynne, 2) During the Broken Circle quest, you're forced on a side quest where you can bulk up on attribute points, and 3) depending on how you choose to handle the situation at the Circle Tower, it can potentially affect your quest in Redcliffe.

4. Im level 7 and have 1 point for a special talent but all I have unlocked atm is SShifter -.- I was thinking BM and then SH just for the passive bonus. <----Good idea?

There's no such thing as a bad idea, so long as you make it work for you. Personally, I'm fond of the Arcane Warrior for my mage hero character.

5. What happens when you beat the game? Start another playthrough, or can you do other things once youve beaten the game.

You can play downloadable content afterwards -- but it's not super-satisfying to do it AFTER you've finished the main plot (since DLC comes in handy for actually playing the game).

6. Im playing offline on PS3...whats different if I play online?

Nothing. Playing while logged in updates your online profile with your progress in the game.

7. AND THIS IS THE BIG ONE, are there events along the way that I can MISS and lose out on something IMPORTANT, then not be able to return to achieve that something.

Yes, but I think you already discovered the biggest one for yourself. (My very first playthrough I didn't pick up Lelianna or Sten either, because I didn't realize I could.) The easiest way to avoid missing out on anything is to have conversations with everyone you can, loot everything you can (you're on the PS3 right?--use the make-everything-shimmer-always option in the settings, which will make lootable objects and codex entries shimmer) and read through your quest-related codex entries.
