Morrigan - Has heal and spells like paralyze (+mass), weakness, Cone of Cold. AoE spells are controlled by me, everything else works on Tactics.
Wynn - Healer with some buff spells. Uses Stonefist on targets Morrigan Freezes.
Leliana - Archer, which I'm finding works pretty well. Better than I had assumed. Her tactics are set up for her to target mages first with her best attacks, then Scatter Shot groups, then look for elite enemies, then armour type, then normal enemies (usually just what's left.)

I'm regretting letting Zevran live on account of hating him, and despite thinking Sten was cool when I freed him, I've never used him once. I'll occasionally use Morrigan in place of Leilana, and Wynne is a useless old bat, so she's never been in my party after the Circle.

Except Leilana would never have very many, even if you took her every single time.
I hardly ever bring her, because: a) lousy DPS, and"Maker preserve us!" They're just hurlocks, we've killed a million of them, STFU.
She is cute, warm and understanding. Even as rl female I find her most rewarding romance option. Screw stupid unbalanced Alistair and "I-am-so-cool" Zevran; Leli is my favorite girl.
If your Leliana does lousy DPS that is because you set her to be lousy, for whatever reason. Mine is a beast. L2Leliana.
i agree completely Leliana is the only 'untouchable'(never gets removed) in my party.
she's got the stealing skills, lockpicking etc, she has bard and ranger specialisation so she plays a huge part in buffing the partys abilities and supporting them via the ranger pet.
the only thing i change is sometimes i have her DW rogue and sometimes specialise more on archery, she might not get the most kills but she contributes a hell of alot and really deals some high damage, she does her job perfectly.
lets not forget that she is also incredibly cute

Yes, exactly. I have her as assasin atm and she is really decent dps. Sometimes I make her second spec ranger for my blood mage but she is good in any combo for me. I set her up like I would set my own rogue, more so when I play mage and have no need for some armor pieces on my PC.
She has her "moments" but generally she agrees with my options and I usually have her "in love" very fast without lot of gifts. If you talk with her some more you can notice she has a lot of sense of humor (well at least her sense of humor agrees with mine

Second character is a Dalish Dualist Warrior who utilized every comrade to some extent and has completed the task thrust upon her.

Wynne is the perfect healer and a proper mage.
Liliana helps with her bard song, range skills, and lock picking/trap disarm for xp
Everyone else seems lacking. Zervan needs too much micromanage to be effective. Sten and Orgren blow because two hand sucks. Morrigan while awesome her attitude stinks for a good party. The dog should be a pet not a part member. Shale is meh. Loghain is very good but thats more of an evil path.

3 range/1 tank
Leli: Pure dex/lock archer
Mori: Crowd & a healer (1 point for heal)
Ali: SnS tank/Max dex/30 or so str.
Now I'm a Human 2h (need some help with this build)
Ali: SnS tank
Leli: Archer
Mori: Pure Crowd

PC: Warrior dual-wielding Berserker/Champion
Alistair: Sword and Board Tank Templar
Leilani: Archery Bard/Ranger
Wynn: Healing, stone first, petrify, etc.
Main substitute was Morrigan, who came in whenever a lot of AoE DPS was called for.
2nd play-through as a mage. Just starting out and have not decided who to go with yet. I do want to try out Shale a lot earlier so Alistair may spend some time in camp. Leilani is likely to be back as resident archer/lockpicker. That leaves one more slot TBD.

I also enjoyed playing a rogue for the first time and being able to take Dog on more missions than I had as a warrior. By the end, I took him almost everywhere. Overwhelm FTW.

Alistair sword&board tank.
Morrigan SH/AW healer.
Leliana in multiple roles. I like that girl more and more with each new game.
Yup. Except Morrigan is SS/SH but more for AoE than healer.
75% of the game was played with those 3. I subbed Wynne for Morrigan because I was forced to in the Circle Tower and kept Oghren for most of the Deep Roads because I felt he should be there being it was the hunt for Branka and all.
Wynne is my next fav and she saved my ass when Morrigan bailed on me. I like Oghren for dialog but he could not replace Alistair as tank so I didn't use him outside the Deep Roads.
I never used Sten/Shale/Zevran and I don't care for their personalities either. Dog is cute but I didn't use him either.

second time, done some respec'ing (cheater!) and used Allistair as dual-wielding warrior, leliana as dual-wielding rogue/archer and Morrigan as healer/arcane warrior. My char being typical warrior tank. worked great.
never really used zevran and oghren, dunno why.
now the only thing left is to set difficulty to max and play as mage, hah

I play on NM and just went through Gaxkang fight without single pause, granted Morrigan did 670 Mana Clash hit first thing but he still had a lot of hp left after that.
I set up my tactics bit better and I hardly have to pause anymore, its great.

I've tried a lot of other varieties but this is by far the most effective for me. Alistair/Shale dialog is hilarious as well.

ME: Rogue with full dual wield traits, duelist and assassin. I weild starfang and the thaig of cadash knife. seems to work out well, I can stand on my own as a seperate tank with full duelist traits unlocked.
Alistar: My freaking main tank and he's a damn fortress too. Templar and Champion. I didn't get the fade wall on the first time killing Oxkhang but oh well still got the sweet sword and I rock HQ dragon scale armor and the redcliff shield.
Morrigan: Mage, shapeshifter and arcane warrior. She's my main DD in my group with full ice, thunder, and fire traits unlocked. She takes out entire groups of enemies before they even engage me. Plus she's hot right?
Wynne: This annoying old bag is the best healer I could ever imagine, full creation and other support spells unlocked, I've done all her side quests/events so she has her plot abilities as well. She's one awesome old bag.

Me: The first time I was a rogue, this time I'm a tank.
Alistair: Yeah...always going to be my sword and shield tank...so until I make a character that's a mage...I'll never see what the other tanks do. lol.
Wynne: Saves my arse so many times. Though in my current play through nothing has even given me a bit of trouble. I don't have her yet, either, due to the way I play through...so I'm using Leliana.
Morrigan: I like having two distance attackers and two tanks. Just how I am. I cakewalked through the first time I played too.

I base my party members on the nature of the place my PC replacing the role of one of the members.
If the fights involve alot of wide open areas where I can see the foes running towards me,
Tank - Alistair (tactics allow for longbow use until the enemy gets to mid range and then switch to SnS)
Rogue - Leliana (Archer/Bard spec)
Mage - Wynne (after heavy respeccing, she has some minor healing, glyphs, Spirit spells, and Storm of the century)
In indoor situations, ones where you open the door and the enemies are already in your face.
Tank - Shale for the AE stuns
Rogue - Zevran (assassin/duelist build respecced to allow lockpicking)
Mage - Morrigan (spirithealer/blood mage) blood wound and the entropy CC spells are great since they are AE but not friendly fire. This allows me to lock down the room while the melee's have their way.
Other Characters
Sten - I bring him out sometimes in the indoor areas, occassionally in the outdoor areas. But he is replaced by....
Ohgren - Sten2.0 Can do anything Sten can do with 2x the specialization, extra spell immunity, and 'flavorful' dialogue......a**chaps.
Dog - I would love to take the dog, but I just cant find a place for the puppy given the limited slots
Shale - I know I listed her as the close quarters tank, but truth be told she usually hangs out at the camp.
My PC tends to take one of the main roles and knocks the others out. As a Mage I realized I didnt need Wynne or Morrigan, this playthrough is a DW rogue so Leliana gets to hang with the dog. Highly likely that ol' Zevs gonna suffer a fatal case of stabbing in the face when he comes a'callin.
