My playthroughs:

20 Rogue (Ranger/Duelist) - Female Dwarven Noble:

Alistair - Tank
Leliana - Ranged dps (Bard/Ranger)
Morrigan - Crowd Control dmg (shapeshifter/spirit healer)
Other - Depending on the needed thing, Sten or Oghren

Double Ranger summons really kick ass with the Master Ranger talent. It's really really awesome. The cd blows due to pets not moving through transitions, but still.

20 Mage (Spirit Healer/Blood Mage) - Female:

Alistair - Tank
Leliana - Ranged dps
Oghren - Berserker/Champion dps.
Sten - dps.

20 Warrior (templar/reaver) - 1h+shield - Female Noble

Morrigan - Debilitator, dmg
Leliana - lockpicker, thief, ranged dmg
Oghren - champion/berserker
Wynne - spirithealer/arcane warrior

Here when I was tanking myself, didn't need the pansy Alistair anymore.

On my current playthrough with a Dalish Elf Male, I've used Sten to be a 2handed massive tank, Morrigan as debilitator, Leliana as lockpicker etc.

And again, I'll have two ranger summons, which are pretty awesome.

-
I never recruited Loghain, he's a traitor and neeeds to die like the bastard he is. There's however a glitch happening even if you kill Loghain, he thanks you for what you've done (as a Grey Warden) just before you go into the city, and is talked about as a Grey Warden recruiter if your main char dies.

Personally, I much more preferred the background ending if my main character actually died at the end.
Considering my male elf is bedding Leliana/Morrigan, I might not have to do that this time I guess :P

Agreed :D

I used Alistair, Oghren, and Wynne.  No strategy behind it...well Wynne is just there to heal....but these were my favorites

It depends what kind of PC I'm playing. At the moment I have a Warrior Templar and usually take Alistair (or sometimes Sten) as tank, with Morrigan throwing hexes left right and centre and doing crowd control if needs be. Wynne is a good fourth, but sometimes I switch her for Shale if I want battles to be a bit more entertaining. You can always fall back on Shale's stone aura if there's trouble.

In my Elven rogue playthrough I think I'm gonna take myself, Zev and Lel as duel wielders + Alistair and see what happens.  /stabbity fun

in my first playthrough i was a dual wield warrior. my party was usually either pc, aliastair, shale, and wynne or pc, alistair, oghren, and wynne. i only went oghren when i had to. i think sten is useless, but i always save him. once in a while i'd go pc, alistair, wynne, and morrigan, but rarely once i got shale.

now in my second playthrough, i am a mage. i decided to make him balanced between attack and healing so i would have zero use for morrigan and wynne. man has it worked like a charm! i almost exclusively go pc, alistair, shale, and leliana. i killed zevran's useless self instead of bothering to bring him along. once in a blue moon i dump leliana for oghren, but not often. before getting shale i used the dog, but i prefer shale.

The only party member that hasn't left any of my playthroughs is Leliana. Male or female, my PC just falls for this girl every time.

Typically, I stick with:

Alister: Sword/Shield Tank. Templar/Champion or Berserker
He's in there to tank, tank, tank. Also for story line purposes.

Leliana: Ranged DPS. Pure Bard, or Bard/whatever, depending on how I feel. Assassin, for RP purposes, considering her barkground.
"To each his own" as the phrase goes. I play with a modification that ACTUALLY gives the bonuses to ranged damage that the manual claims is in there, and Archers dish out more pain than anything else I've seen, other than mages. She's also the resident lockpicker.

Third slot is a toss up. I've used all of the other party members, but Shale usually works her way in eventually. Just too much "tank" written over her (in blue and red crystals, too! Very slimming) to leave out of some battles. Sten's seen a recent full time slot in one playthrough. 2hander Reaver or Berserker. I gave him a 2handed Starfang and he's dealing upwards of 100 damage with that thing.

Current playthrough:

PC - Male!Surana - Blood Mage/Spirit Healer , Damage/CC + Healing

Zevran - Assassin/Duelist - Damage, Backstabs, Lockpicking, Traps... Massages.

Sten - Champion - Meatshield, damage

Shale - Squishing nasty werewolves and spiders whenever they're trying to overwhelm my poor mage >.> Other than that, I only bring Shale along because of the fun factor.

Main - Dwarf DW  Warrior
Shale - Tank
Wynne - Support
Leliana - Archer, lockpicking

Works like a charm for me. My first character was an all over the place spec mage. Group DPS was terrible.  Started over with this setup and it's great.

First time playing through I made a tank, on Normal difficulty

PC Warrior - Sword-and-Board Tank, dumping points in Constitution (yeah, **** sucked)
Alistair - Dual Wield (Again, waste of effort)
Morrigan - Damage
Wynne - Healer

I abandoned this setup because I felt squishy and dps sucked (I had no idea what I was doing regarding stats, and Alistair's wasted Sword-and-Board talents really hurt me).  I rerolled myself as a mage, then ramped the difficulty up to Nightmare

PC Mage - Healer/DPS
Wynne - Healer/DPS
Alistair - Tank
Leliana - Melee

Finally completed the game last night, my PC hitting level 20 on the very last pack of enemies before the battle with the Archdemon.  I'm now planning on a runthrough as a warrior again

PC Warrior - Dual Wield Tank
Leliana - Ranged
Morrigan - Healer/DPS
Wynne - Healer/DPS

I figure the mages only really need a few talent points to the able to heal effectively (6 or so for all the healing I could possibly want), the rest can be dumped in damage/CC talents. I'm also planning a couple of other run throughs

PC Rogue - Melee
Leliana - Melee
Zevran - Melee
Morrigan - Healer/DPS

PC Mage - DPS/Healer
Wynne - DPS/Healer
Morrigan - DPS/Healer
Leliana - Ranged

The all-ranged party should be interesting.

Barring all RP/meta gaming/gameplay restrictions I place on myself the three I'd take with me would be:

Lately for me it's been the Mabari warhound, Leliana(no way is she leaving my party on this character, sigh:wub:), and Wynne. I like how the hound finds things(pantaloons, anyone?).....

       I don't mind Alistair......and Shale reminds me of DA:O's version of HK-47......;)

I've used Zev and Sten a total of one time each.:pinched:

After seeing Oghren, i think Dwarf punting should take the place of Gnome punting.

what works for me is:

melee x2 (picking from): PC, Sten, Oghren, Alastair, Shale, Dog, Zevran, Leliana

ranged x1: PC / Leliana

mage x1: PC / Wynne / Morrigan

Naturally any one of the characters would have to be a rogue of sufficient skill to pick every lock available. Other than that it's all interchangeable! I try not to have more than one melee of a particular sort, so if I'm playing a 2h warrior, Sten & Oghren are mostly out, similarly for Zev with a dual wielder. I have no problems taking along more than one rogue or warrior, however I feel it's important to at least have one of every class in the party...RAWR!

Mage Pc/ Morrigan / Sten / Shale I would have let Zev rotate in but I killed him.. so for situations that I can't use this crew I subbed in dog, example Flemeth battle.

Everyone seems to count Zevhran out, don't forget he can also become a bard, him and Leliana can be interchangable. All a matter of preference.
