The revelation: the average Silver PUGs are a wide margin better at this game than the average Gold PUGs, yet the better ones are still playing Silver. Which, in hindsight, may actually make some sense, for they know what we know: Gold PUGs are of a much lesser quality than they used to be.

Just a funny realization that took me this long to realize.

I 100% disagree.  In my experience (xbox) gold pug games are often a lot easier then siver pug games, simply because the player base playing gold is so much better.  In Silver pug games, you get way more lone wolf players trying to generate points so they are seen in 1st.  In gold pug games you get teamwork.  Players who know when to be aggressive, when to camp, when to retreat, when to use equipment.  In gold you are rarely left to die if you go down, whereas in silver often players see downed teammates as an opportunity to secure more points.

It's all the luck of the draw. I've only played about 10 games in the past couple weeks and most of them had good players, even two other "Best of the best" titles (not that it means anything only 2 or 3 challenges require some skill). But there have been those days where you'd swear you were playing with 8 year olds.

Also, you came to the conclusion that gold pugs are worse than silver pugs after two games? You probably were playing with gold players doing challenges on silver, although I think most people are done with the annoying challenges that wanted to do them.

Silver is no better than gold pugs. It's worse usually 4 people doing their own thing or challenge and not reviving each other. I was wasting just as much gel or missiles playing it which is why I stopped playing silver and stay in Gold. Sometimes you find that lobby with players that are good and too afraid for gold. Even a bad gold pug can usually clear wave 6 so I see no point to Silver.

Most of my gold PUGS have been very good. If there is one other good player, we usually extract.

One other matter that I didn't see (but have not read the whole thread) is the matter of LAG.

I can generally play silver matches ok with whatever lag is doing, but when I play gold, my internet seems to saturate at times and I feel bad that I even started the match as I can't contribute effectively.

As it is, no matter how I play, I generally have 1/2 the top scorers score. The other players just get the kill before my shot is registered. (At least I keep telling myself that... I can't be THAT bad.)

Anyways, even with months of playing, N7 score, challenges score, equipment, etc. I get low score most of the time. Don't just blame PUGs. There are other variables. I do agree that gold players generally play together better, where silver players are lone wolves. This makes the game run totally different re. spawns, etc.

There are a lot of gold and platinum players that just want to be carried through the whole game.

If they're having to pop medigels in silver, they're probably not great gold players... Gold PUGs have never been high quality.

Because nobody ever goes down to anything ever. If they do they're a noob and should quit playing, right?

Come on, everyone can take one from the rocket trooper/marauder/phantom etc. they didn't see at one point or another.

Some of the Silver players I've met though, are more than Gold-capable. I honestly think they're lagging behind in Silver because of the bad PUGlicity ("PUG publicity") of Gold players. They don't want to waste consumables for nothing. And after tonight's stunt, I can't blame them.

I'm in that group.  I can play Gold, and if I play with people who are about the same level as me, we will at least get the Wave 10 credits on 90% of Gold matches without burning through too many gels/ops/missiles.  A lot of other Silver and Gold players are about the same level as me, I think.  The problem is that too many Gold PUGS are infested with people who don't belong anywhere near a Gold game skill-wise, or people who refuse to use consumables.  Having even one of them in your group can be tough to compensate for unless you have a really good player who can carry the group.  I play Silver because it's more fun than dealing with that.

Silver is much more fun to play for me. I really don't go to Gold for anything beyond Credits or, with Map Mastery now, challenges. I imagine similar attitudes could be the cause of you seeing better random players on Silver vs Gold. We're not all sub-humanoids, some people just don't like the pressure of Gold.

It's kinda sad how true this is. I was playing a PUG yesterday, UUG, and two players join with N7 ranks under 200, with no consumables, and weapons at level IV. Then another guy joins, and is roughly my level. He has no consumables either, but I'm a Destroyer with a Harrier and Piranha with consumables out my ass, so I say screw it and start the match.

Big mistake. I ended up having to solo waves 3-7, after the guy that was my level insisted in the beginning of the game that he didn't need consumables, since it was only gold. (He came in last place.) It was infuriating and hilarious at the same time.

Sometimes you get lucky and play with people who are playing at their level and using consumables when they need to. Sometimes you don't. Though I think it's more likely to find players playing their level in silver because they wont be leeching for credits in silver.

I see the same thing. That's why I usually play silver despite being perfectly comfortable in gold. Those terrible gold pugs. Silver is just more fun because of better teammates (or at the very least people capable of the chosen difficulty).
And I'm sorry, silver can get super hairy at times. No, its not as hard as gold overall, but there are times when it can spike up to gold difficulty, apples to apples.

Heck, if I've been playing gold and switch down to silver I tend to die a lot in opening waves because I'm overestimating the decrease in squishiness.

Those are the ones readying up without equipment, getting pissed when downed and not revived in 0.2 sec and quit.

The OP pretty much sums up how I feel about Silver and Gold. Silver is a breeze due to decent teammates. When I play PUG Gold, I seem to be the only one who knows how to hold a controller.
