Question aside, how is the book, in a booky sense?
Worth the buy?

If you like fantasy and you're invested in the Dragon age lore then yes. Otherwise, no. What is a 'booky sense' exactly?

By that I meant in terms of how well its written.

I have heard it said here on the forums that its the best-written of the Dragon Age books so far.

I haven't read the Stolen Throne or The Calling, so I can't speak for them.

I read and enjoyed Asunder.  Its a nice little story where the good guys don't win it all, and the bad guys don't either.  It has nice call outs to the series in it ( chiefly speak of Shale, Wynne, and Leliana's presence) and goes very well with hot chocolate and warm blankets.  Drink the chocolate, burrow into the blankets.  Don't do either of those things with the book.

A tad more seriously (and spoilery): I was grimly satisfied when Wynne finally reacehd her limit with the Circle and stormed the Tower with...actually I'll quit right there.  She was such an apologist during DA:O that seeing her flirt with her dark side was almost cathartic.

If you accept it for what it is - understanding the limitations of the genre and not expecting something which would find itself on the Mann-Booker Prize shortlist - then you won't be disappointed. If you enjoy David Gaider's writing in the games, then the chances are you will like it.
I had never read this sort of book before (by which I mean a tie-in) and was a little sceptical. However, I found it very entertaining, well-paced, with engaging new characters and portrayal of returning characters in a manner consistent with their previous incarnations. There was interesting plot-development as well as fleshing-out of themes and lore to which we have already been introduced. And yes, it was well-written, given my caveats above, although not brilliantly proof-read.
As it happens, I am currently re-reading it and still find it enjoyable.
