Folks, Little help here.  I picked up Rasaad, the LG Monk, in BG EE.  Problem is, I've never played a Monk in BG (p&p for that matter).

He's carrying a couple of Japanese swords, a Ninjato and a Wakashizi (or something like that).  Anyway, when we confront a foe I don't know how to fight him.

He has the 'stunning blow' but once I click on his special ability, do I click on the foe I want him to attack or do I just 'let him do his thing?  Seems like when I click to attack the foe, he uses his sword instead.  I want him doing karate on the bad guys first and using the sword as his 'secondary' attack.

His 'kit' says he can make one unarmed attack per round (or segment).  How do I get him to do that?  Do I click on the 'fist' as I would a normal PC/NPC if I wanted them to pummel?

I would like to learn to play this NPC and I'm doing some 'in game' testing but that keeps landing me @ the Temple of Helm in Nashkel b/c his AC @ this point is only 5.

Any pointers?

From what I've heard on the BG:EE Forums is that monks are very weak in BG1.

However, to get him to do his unarmed attack, he can't have any weapons on whatsoever. I would advise to putting a pip in slings or darts, and letting him stand back until he has enough HP and/or better AC. Of course, I was stubborn though and let him use a Ninjato+1 for most of my game. Hah.

Yeah, I found a +1 Samurai Sword and he has that and a Ninjato. I just want to, 'see him do his thing' some. Although, what you say is true. Might be smart to stand back with a dart or sling for a while.

By the way, is it okay to talk about BGEE here in these forums? I don't want the moderators to get on to me. If I'm in the wrong forum, it's purely through ignorance and I'll cease and desist. I think of BGEE as BG.

If you turn the AI off then he won't be tempted to switch from unarmed combat to a sword. That might be the easy way to see what he can do.

Also note that one of the problems with monks is that they have poor THAC0. You can make his stunning blow much more likely to take effect by attacking from stealth (+4 bonus to hit). The monk's stealth is pretty poor, but if you know a battle is coming up you can find some handy shadows to hide in easily enough.

The below is my experience without scripts (I gave up on them many years ago).

In a party of 6 I'd say BG1 is best spent with a sling unless you want to micro-manage your party and have the monk arrive behind a tank or emerge from the shadows once combat has started.

Darts have a shorter range and the monk moves faster than most of a party so arrives first to most battles and then stands closest - a recipe for death unless you micro-manage.

A rolled monk can get more involved from level 6 on, haven't got BG:EE so not able to say if Rasaad can do this - monks with less than STR 18 DEX 18 CON 16 are going to have a harder time. I guess he could be effective with a hit, run, hide, return approach similar to a thief but I found that was an extreme of micro-management in a full party.

Stunning blow is ineffective when a weapon is equipped. Once activated it shows an icon , while active an unarmed attack will require both a hit and a failed save to stun the enemy. I tend to only use this attack in solo or true multiplayer and not in a solo party game. This ability gets better with levels for two reasons - firstly the monk is more likely to hit as THACO drops and secondly they get more attacks while the ability is active so an enemy will be forced to save multiple times.

Armed attacks per round.
Your monk will have 1 APR with a weapon. 2 in BG2 with a weapon such as belm. Increasing to 10 with Whirlwind high level abilities.

Unarmed attacks per round.
The monk will gain more attacks per round as they level up, and the damage increases too. The "Kit" button gives a good description.

Switching from armed to unarmed or vice-versa each round won't give you extra attacks. It will be similar to a character switching between a crossbow with 1APR to the Tuigan shortbow with more APR.

I found it was best to remain unarmed unless particular benefits were required in BG2 (e.g. elemental damage, slashing/piercing damage, Daystar Sunray) but that's probably a topic for BG2:EE.

Looks like that does it for getting him to put a whoopin' on the bad guys.  I put all his weapons away and he went to kickin' and a choppin' in no time.  Actually, he isn't too bad in my initital trials.  I have him at the back of the party formation b/c of his weak AC.  By the time he gets to the fight, my PC, a tank w/Ankheg armor is already there and has the monsters full attention. Rasaad just comes up and starts a wailing (or is it whaling?) on him. He definately provides a punch and assisted my fighter in bringing down some bad guys.

I like using the 'scripts' (which are better defined w/more categories in BGEE).  Scripts give my NPCs a mind of their own and, just like in my real job as a military officer, sometimes my NPCs don't do exactly what I want them to (or have ordered them) to do.  More realistic that way to me.  I have Rasaad set to "Fighter Defensive' which includes a provision that keeps him close to my PC - as do many of the newer scripts.

Now to work on integrating his 'stunning blow' and stealth combo.
