I just realised I've been playing for an hour with my lead warrior, usually fighting with a huge 2H sword... unarmed. 
Even if I forget to put that sword back in its slot after some packrating, there is always one sword, but very weak, showing. 
Same for every weapon and shield. 

Which means you don't really see when your companion is not using his chosen weapon. 
I found it very confusing and... unnecessary. 

And it doesn't make any sense.

Yes, every character has a very weak weapon that they use if they're not equipped with another weapon of your choosing. Except Varric, who cannot unequip Bianca.

Exactly, and I can't see the good side if it, beside the technical exploit.
Just a bad idea.
And a tiring one.
A good game makes you forget you're playing.

I have never done that before. That is not have an weapon equipted.

The system isn't equipped to handle unarmed combat. They've eliminated any non-cutscene animations that involve your PC (or party member) striking an enemy bare-handed.

I don't really see why it's a bad idea. The default weapon usually varies in appearance from the weapon you intend to be using and it's plainly evident in both your stats and your inventory screen. In over 100 hours of playing DA2, I think there was a total of one battle where I had unequipped a weapon and forgot to re-equip another one because I got distracted. Once I noticed my damage was very poor, I corrected the problem.
