from the bioware Awakening page:

Import your character from Dragon Age: Origins or start anew as a Grey Warden from the neighboring land of Orlais

Encounter five all-new party members and an old favorite from Dragon Age: Origins

Import your last saved game on the PC you let snuff it for the common good. Pretend their buddies hauled the rotting carcass out of the dirt and prodded it with a magic stick until they started moving again.

Awakening does have new spells and abilities. We'll be giving out details on some of them later. :)

Amaranthine is not in Orlais but in Ferelden, to the northeast

Amaranthine isn't part of Ferelden is it? I though it was part of Thedas(which I thought was the general land mass as a whole, like ferelden & orlais are in Thedas?)
Also is Amaranthine a small island towards the top of the map in Origins or this that peninsula & Amaranthine is the large land mass above us?

Amaranthine IS part of Ferelden, it's the realm of Arl Howe, near Vigil's Peak. You can see the city of Amaranthine on this map, near the Amaranthine Ocean:

So Amaranthine is indeed part of the kingdom of Ferelden.

Are you a 100%? That map say Ferelden with an arrow pointing to the Free Marches where this is a peninsula that looks like it leads to a new continent which would make me assume it is not part of Ferelden. Plus in the description for the expansion it say "you adventure to a NEW land called Amaranthine" So I don't think it is part of Ferelden. They didn't say new section/part of Ferelden. That is just me though, I am one to question everything & so far facts point more towards Amaranthine NOT being part of Ferelden but I could easily be wrong just missed something?

"A Stunning World Expanded: BioWare's deepest universe to date just got bigger with an all new area of the world to explore, Amaranthine"

Also found this! so world/land mass/ all continents=Thedas(I believe anyone correct me with a link if I am wrong) Amaranthine= new place that is not part of Ferelden.

I think the returning party member is Alistair. I saw him in the trailer.

Ya, but you see Oghren actually IN your group. All signs point to him... for now.

PS- Still kinda pissed that your dead character can't "return." By return I mean his choices/ending doesn't effect squat. Kinda stupid. Mass effect will carry over decisions made in ME:2 to ME:3 even if your char dies. I'm a sad sad panda.

No, your right, thats true... but it doesn't take an ending where you die into account, you have to cut the story short, and fill in the blanks. Not horrible I guess, but it doesn't seem as if it would be THAT hard to do. Then agian, I'm no game designer so it may infact be very tricky.

Actually, I just watch a vid on gametrailers.com where the ME2 Bioware project lead states explicitly that a dead Shepard at the end of ME2 is the one save that cannot be imported to ME3.  It is the interview on the trilogy vid if you are interested in viewing it.  Pretty interesting if you ask me.

Was this actually confirmed somewhere?  If it was that's kind of crappy.  I tried to click on the Bioware thing under the name of this topic since apparantly that's supposed to filter out every reply except the ones from the Bioware guys but it doesn't work for me, it just brings me back to the main page of the forums.  I do have a save right before the Landsmeet so if it comes down to it I can always load that and then play through to an ending that I can import into awakening, but still, the ultimate sacrifice ending is my favorite and I was really hoping to use that for Awakening and see that reflected in the game.

Edit:  Hmm, the bioware tag filter thing is actually working for me now.  Weird.  I still don't see any post that says the ultimate sacrifice ending can't be imported though.

Gaider kind of confirmed it in another thread. Originally he said that you could transfer the save of a dead character over and the choices you made would be reflected in Awakening with the Orlesian Warden, then he back tracked a bit on his words. So it may still happen, he may have backtracked simply because it wasn't meant to be revealed yet and they wanted to wrap that surpise back up but it does look like the Orlesian Warden will follow a cannon story everytime.

So what if your ending had to do with you marrying Alistair and becoming queen? Will that tie into the expansion?

I REALLY wanted to chage my name to Dumb, so I could respond "NO mine is!"

Hmmm... that wasn't nearly as funny on paper as I imagined it would be.

i have been pondering.. and if my character is unable to continue his romance with Zev, he won't continue. cause Alistiar is just annoying.

in which case, i suppose i'd have to start a new character with no chance to ever meet Zev, cause they have all romanced him male and female alike.

For moderators replies you can click Bioware below the thread title. But to answer your question directly we do not know who the character is or if it is even an old favorite from your companion selection. It could be an NPC, we do not know as of rigth now :(

by now, regardless of what people claim what or whom they have seen, a BioWare secret.
There are theories and speculations running about who it will be or who it can't be, but by now, we do know nothing except that one unspecified former party member will return
