We have been on this site for a while. Any advice you'd like to give your new buddies here?

Here is mine:

I think a very nice thing you can do is go to your privacy settings and see what you think is worthwhile enough to be broadcast to all your friends in the recent activity feed.

Right now, your friends get info on everything you do, from an update in status to a friend you made, and it can get overwhelming. I get so many, I can't keep track of many of you.

I assume that my friends may only want to know only when I post a comment on a forum or a blog and I have attempted to manipulate settings such that- that is all they will get updates on. Maybe you'd like to look at your privacy settings and see what you would reconsider so that your acttivies as displayed on your friend's pages are more manageable?

Any other advice on being a good community member?

I never thought about that. Okay, to be absolutely honest, I have no idea what 1/2 that stuff is. Hmmmm...I will do that now.

Tell me about it. I figured it out totally by accident because this site can be a tad overwhelming.

Any other advice, ideas, things that you wish to share? Either from your experience here or on other social networking sites?

But... I am important!

Honestly, which of those "reminders" are important anyway?

Be nice... plant a tree... don't do drugs... and have fun!

That is a judgment call Urgnu. You may well decide your friends should know everything you are upto.

A good bit of advice there, imported_beer. I'll go take it.

My personal two whatever would be to simply act cautiously...and, Grammar fascist that I am, make sure everything's typed well. A decently presented argument or point of view, or even just a comment, will be much more well regarded than anything which uses numbers for letters.

People might want take into consideration of the dozen notifications telling us where you made a post. I think people that are generally interested in what you posted will be aware of it (including me).

I tried to limit mine as soon as someone mentioned privacy filters.

Here's what I left on:

Changing profile photo.
Creating a Group
Joining a Group
Getting Tagged in a Group Photo
Creating an Album
Getting Tagged in a Photo
New topic in forum
Reply to a topic in forum
Creating a Poll
Creating a New Project
Updating a Project
New File Added to Project
Posting a Project Comment
Uploading a new Dragon Age Origins Character
Uploading Images to a Project

Most of these I feel are relevant to you wanting to be updated on, since I either do them rarely, or because I feel they are important enough that you should be notified if it occurs.

Agree? Disagree? I'd like to hear suggestions on this, honestly.

As for tips to other people in the forum, behave. We're adults here and we should behave like responsible people, just as we would either in a work-place or at a place we go to relax. Don't attack other uses, but use the report function instead. Getting into arguments is fine, just use self-moderation to try to cut it off if you find it is on a ground you can't agree with eachother on and agree to disagree with eachother.

Take the high ground. Always. :innocent:

I never looked at the privacy settings closely until now. I did look over the 'Filters' on the home/Recent Activities page. They can also cut down on 'spam' that one may not wish to see. Urgnu may think that showing who he friends is important, but Amberyl might not think the same. So she can filter those 'show friend requests' out of what she sees on her Recent Activities feed. Least, that is how I understand it to work so far.

In user home (What's New and What's New => My Friends) there's a Filters option above the recent activity tracker to the left. It works the same way as your privacy settings but for incoming messages.

It's easier if you just delete all your friends you know...:?

OH NOES!! It's the grammar police! Image IPBYou may also want to remember that not everyone speaks English as their native language. I think tolerance is a good rule for the forum, but that's just MHO.Image IPB

To n2nw:

Tolerance is of course a virtue, and I do remember that not everyone speaks English.

I just get the urge to kill and stomp up and down on words with numbers in them. It's probably freudian. Nevertheless, I do think people should try and get the words and sentences accurate and clear. If I was, say, to go to a Japanese forum, I would try my hardest to make sure my Japanese was right.

Tolerating genuine newbishness is a good thing, tolerating random leetspeak isn't, eh?

I'm sorry, but leetspeak is acceptable here as it is a language option. ;p

My heart is broken into a thousand tiny quivering pieces, as if it had been struck down by a great blow from a hammer, screaming millions of times, and then fading into silence.

Yay overreaction!

Yes, but there is also the matter of ignoring leetspeak being vastly better for your mental health. If I reacted to the things that annoyed me, I'd be half mad by now and the ability to go "meh" at that sort of thing, has ensured I am only 1/4th mad !!1!!

/Yes the number was deliberate.
