In general:
I always use the mage. Even if I choose my main character to be a warrior, I stll play the mage.
I use different strategies for different scenarios.
Warriors are the most effective in the center of the battle. Meanwhile rogues and mages are best on the edges of battle. When you are in the heat of battle with a warrior your view of the battle is very limited. Meanwhile, the location of the mage or rogues provides a better perpsective for a player with a field battle mentality like myself.
While the rogues archery attacks are much better in part two than part 1, there is something more satisfying about using a mage. Of course mages proivide a lot more function to the party than a rogue can. Freezing, healing, explosions, and many diferent support spells!

Attack strategy 1:
One of my set my archer (rogue) to seek the highest enemy while everyone else attacks the lowest enemies. This tactic keeps the (big guy) busy while everyone else teams ups and kills off the small fry one by one (Divide and conquer).
Remember the enemy with the highest health is usually the boss or elite. However, not all high health enemies are bosses or elites. Some of them are broncos.
While setting a member to attack the enemy with the most health can cause your rogue or mage to go from enemy to enemy.
This isn't such a bad thing when you consider that he or she is using explosive rounds, fireballs, ice rockets that knock your enemies on their asses or freeze them solid. This gives your other characters an advantage. It's a lot easier to kill someone who is lying down.
Of course you can set one of your characters to attack the bosses and elites (first), but them you spend half of your tactic slots for this one purpose.

Attack strategy 2:
Forming a party of mages and rogues can be very effecitve against any set of foes. They have attacks that blanket an area with multiple strikes from the same attack (hail of arrows, firestorm, temptest). This works well against the undead, demons, and the profane rock creatures at end of Act 1
If I am carrying more than one mage: I use one mage for purely elemental attacks and the other mages for support duties.

Boss Attack Strategy 1:
During boss battles with dragons or the rock wraith I set all of the 'other characters to fight the small fry while I concentrate on the boss. (Again, divide and conquer)

Boss Attack Strategy 2:
During boss battles with ogres I set all of the 'other characters to fight the boss while I take out the small then I jin them and use long distance attacks and provide healing and other supportive potions.

Boss Attack Strategy 3:
Use majpor attacks on the boss and then run from him and let it chase you around the room while your other characters are slaming him ioor it with everything they have. Then when he  or it turns to retaliate on one of them, I turn (with a refilled meter) and give it all I have. This works great on dragons and ogres.

Boss Attack Strategy 4:
I found a party of mages and archers (rogues) are the most effective against dragons (boss).Bosses (esp. dragons) are a pain to fight head-to-head. Lots of damage to your party!
Rogues and mages attack from long range. The ability to attack long range means that you can separate your characters and lock them into position. Then the boss can only attack one poerson at a time. This mean you are only healing one character instead of scrambling to heal multiple people at one time.
Plus mages and rogues have attacks that blanket an area with multiple strikes from the same attack (hail of arrows, firestorm, temptest). I found that I can take down the dragon at the bone pit in less than 30 seconds by using those three attacks.

Well, I usually have Aveline as my tank have plenty of elve root potions, Have Merrill set to use Chain Reaction on Staggered opponents. I usually hit the nearest available enemy especially if they are hitting me.

I have fun but don't do well on Nightmare difficulty.

I don't use the Strategies you seem to have employed effectively. I think I beat on the ogre until it dies then try to kill the darkspawn. The rock wraith I beat on until it's time to run. then I hit one of the little guys and beat on the wraith again. I do the group battle at the arishock. and muddle through the high dragon and the waves of dragons.

Anyone do the same thing as me?
