Why are people getting so upset with this? Its just one magazine with a different opinion, remember those people who picked FIFA 13 for 'Most Innovative Game'?
That made me feel ill just reading it

I have no doubt ME3 deserved some of the praise it got, it's definitely not as bad as the BSN makes it out to be, but it is certainly not the best game published this year.

The thing I remember with ME personally as what sets it apart is the Story imports, how choices in one game effect the next.
With ME1 it was a clean slate for this, so they made the story branch out a bit.
With ME2 It was your Import that defined it, I remember a mate of mine who I got hooked into the series, and when we compared our play-through s, There were differences from the beggining of this title, they may not all have been huge, but the big choices were recognized, and the smaller ones often showed up.
With ME3 however it did not feel this way, I remember from the beginning thinking "WTF, why is Anderson on earth, I made him councilor", and with the council I saved I did not really notice a difference, until I discovered everyone gets the same council. I will not go into the ending, that has been explored enough. But the priority earth, as of ME2 I expected something EPic, where I would get to make choices, and would actually have an effect.
What I got was a sequence of not that great shooter action.
In the previous games the squad-mates were a key part, in ME1 they were deep characters, in ME2 they were still deep, and there were more of them, then in ME3 I hear they are cutting the number of squad mates, so I think "Ooh, even more depth and conversations", and I get most of them hardly ever talking for real at all, and my L.I Ashley, does not even get a single real conversation once I am aboard the Normandy. After the first 3rd of the game.
Do not get this the wrong way, I enjoyed the game, how is this innovative or a great improvement on the previous titles?

I will tell you that I wish I could say that my experience with the ending of ME3 hadn't been tainted by all the negative blowblack post release. But I believe that all the negativity surrounding this game post release did effect my opinion of it. It got a little toxic. After I put the game away for a while and came back to it with fresh eyes after Leviathan I fell in love the lore all over again.
I believe that Casey and company didn't live up to their promises or expectations with the ending, but I do believe that they tried and I am one of those people who just loves the ME universe so much it just doesn't matter that much to me anymore. I haven't played a single game this year that I was more invested in than this one. (Maybe Walking Dead comes close...)
I now look at this game as one BIG ending....not just the last 10 minutes. The extended cut also lessend the anger that I felt when I thought that they crippled the universe I was so acitvely enthralled by. I chose Destroy and Hackett's optimistic speech at the end redeemed the whole game for me.
This game was about "hope" and that speech gave me that "hope" for the series continuation.

If Assassins creed 3 didnt suck, I'd say give it to that.
If Dishonored wasn't such a let down, I'd say give it to that.
Maybe TWD should get it, but besides that, there isn't much else.
Sleeping Dogs was fun, but no GOTY
Max Payne 3? Eh, good, but not THAT good.

It just goes to show you why if you bother with any of these Game Awards/Reviews, you might as well just punch yourself in the face. It is quicker and it makes more sense.
They should have put ME 3 Multiplayer up for an rpg award. Because it is a better rpg than ME3 single player.

They should stick to their opinion. Even if it's wrong, as in this case.

You are saying not being able to admit you are wrong runs rampant in the game industry, even when you might garner an iota of honesty.
I agree.

Seriously though, why are people getting so upset?
Well, PROBABLY because a non-thinking pro-ender thinks it validates their opinion of the game. And a non-thinking anti-ender thinks somehow it might invalidate their opinion, or they are just grieved at having to put up with non-thinking pro-enders lauding the game endlessly.
While if you are a thinking pro-ender, anti-ender, or well, thinking anything, you realize that a) nobody's opinion changed,

Mass Effect 3 is not the best game of just the year- it is the best game of the last decade.
One of the best, at least, alongside several other strong contenders including ME2.
