Some advice that will help as you move up difficulty levels. Most of this is more rewarding on the transitions to gold and platinum though.
Learn how to use soft cover, and right hand advantage. Combining the two allows you to maintain fire down range longer while being at less risk to take damage.
Hard cover gives additional damage resistance, and (except for Harrier) increases accuracy.
Using the Left Trigger to aim increases both accuracy and recoil. On most shotguns only recoil is increased. This means some weapons may be easier to manage when hip-firing.
Most Sniper Rifles do less damage when hip-fired.
A lot of-in game descriptions are misleading or outright false. Because of this I would recommend familiarizing yourself with game statistics and mechanics of classes and weapons you use often.
After maxing commons, I actually recommend focusing on Spectre packs, while buying enough Veteran packs to maintain a good supply of consumables. The reason for this is Spectre packs are more likely to unlock the consumable capacity upgrades and some of the better gear (Grenade Capacity) as well as the Acolyte. This strategy means you will be leveling up your guns a bit more sporadically, but this can be compensated for by focusing on classes with a caster playstyle, so you aren't as dependent on weapon damage.
There is a spawn budget. If you concentrate on eliminating the small enemies you will have to face fewer bosses per wave.
The spawn budget is unlimited while an object is active. Unless it is a kill targets objective. only use missiles in emergency situations before the objective is complete.
Let your team know when you are forced to fall back, this can prevent them being caught in a pincer.
Debuffs are often more useful than direct damage power evolutions.
The Asari Justicar bubble can be used to detonate on deployment even if you don't have the warp evolution.
Don't panic, try to assess the situation when using consumables or reviving teammates. If you have help nearby and the enemy isn't bearing down hard wait for a revive. If the wave is almost over, you are probably better off bleeding out than geling if you have competent teammates up. If you are the only one up and your teammates are bleeding out, and only one enemy that you can handle on your own is alive, don't risk the revives, go for the kill.
Team synergy helps. You may want to change classes or playstyles based upon the composition of the lobby. A biotic in a tech room is probably going to have to settle for being a debuffer and tech detonator rather than soloing biotic explosions.

I've played a few games with starlitegirl I believe.
#1 tip when moving up to any new game level, do not be afraid to run away if things look dicey,
One thing that makes a huge difference is learning where spawns will generally occur. Also don't be afraid to stick to a team mate and follow them around if they are pretty good.
In most cases it is a matter of just getting your nose bloodied a few times. If you do go down think about why it happened.

I'd like to echo my thanks to everyone on here! PLayed soem Silver last night and did ok! Extracted most of the time with my quarian female eng and was useful, and didn't feel like I was carried. Although my first match was with one of the guys on here (MightyGoosh!) in Gold and I was definitely carried through that even with decent gear!
So thanks for the match Goosh but I was definitely outclassed!
