How do rockets work?

In the first Mass Effect game, a lot of enemies would be wielding rocket launchers. They'd act like standard video game rocket launchers; fairly slow travel speed, very high damage, high splash radius, dumb fire. However, is it ever explained how these rockets are supposed to work?

In the codex entry for the Cain, it states that conventional explosives have been made all but obsolete. With that in mind, what are the rockets? They certainly can't be mass accelerator weapons, they move too slow. Are they normal rockets? If they are normal rockets, how are they fired out of such small launchers? Were the developers simply too lazy to make a separate model for the rocket launcher? What kind of warhead would they be comparable to?

And most importantly: logically, would they as powerful, less powerful, or more powerful than modern rockets? If so, what would that say about the Mako's ability to eat them up?
