they did this because they didn't have time to write a mind meld scene for Ashley also.....

...besides, it was always kinda hinted at that Liara was supposed to be the 'canno' love interest.

Both, if genuine, were epic and would've added so much character and personality to two key players in the game.  That this was edited out is just... lame.
