While I don't mind them looking at Skyrim and being inspired, I don't want Dragon Age III to be a Skyrim clone. I play Bethesda RPGs to have a huge world to explore, and a load of backstory/lore to be uncovered.

BioWare RPGs I play for the fantastic characters and the story. If DA3 loses that trying to replicate a huge open world, I'm not interested.

TLDR: I like open worlds, just don't go after it, sacrificing the characters and story.

ahhh yes, gamespot, another terrible video game journalistic site that's ****e....
that article was very stupid, bioware did not state that which the article is mentioning at all.

I don't want my cat to grow wings and start vomiting fireballs at the people who walk by the upper balcony.

But I'm not going to start a thread about it.

...What point was this comment trying to make? OPs post was at least relevant to DA.

Fear mongering.

I am well aware that Dragon age would likely NEVER be "open world" in the sense of Skyrim and GTA3-5 however I would enjoy a lot more random areas to discover that had very little to do with main quests or such. I love just finding an area and piecing together what's going on in it and what has gone on there just by exploring it and finding little clues and info.
The only thing that I really hoped that DA3 would take away from Skyrim is modding support. But that'd be kinda hard due to third-party software and the extra work it takes to make it publicly accessible. In anycase I'm pretty sure we are all quite certain that NO Bioware game will be a Skyrim-clone, as that is totally NOT the type of game Bioware makes.

So more like Borderlands (2)?

Maria's point is completely valid.

I don't want to have a character so afeared of tomatoes that they turn into a quivering mess everytime something red catches their eye, but I didn't start a thread about it.

I suddenly want this. Very much.

Hmm. Well, just make sure to neuter the darn thing before it has a litter of hybrid kittens. :innocent:

I got the impression that they're looking at Skyrim for inspiration, not to make DA3 a carbon copy or steal aspects from it.

1) Of course they are looking towards Skyrim. They are probably looking at Borderlands and AssCreed and Xcom and every game out there. If they can find something they like and would make sense to integrate they're going to do it. Its called innovation and thats just a fancy word for stolen/copied.

2) I dig the illusion of open world but absolutely hate open world. Big areas like the Deep Roads in DAO and parts of KOA did a great job of feeling "open worldy" without actually being an open world to get lost in a ridiculous amount of nothing space.

I am pretty sure they meant the level design not the actual gameplay. Just look at those marvelous landscape in Skyrim, who would not want to do that in their own game.

I don't recall saying it wasn't valid, I said relevant; You know, what yours and Maria's comments aren't.<_<

I dunno, the prospect of an open world fantasy game with a story/characters on the level of Dragon Age might be the best game ever. BioWare already has one of those things down pat. No reason they can't pull off the other. :D

Why would you expect EA not to copy Skyrim? Skyrim sold 11+ million copies. EA sees the green.

One of the aspects I absolutely enjoy from a Bioware game is how it makes you feel as if you're experiencing a story alongside a group of companions. As much as I love Skyrim, it always feels like a more solitary experience when compared to a game like Dragon Age. I imagine that a strong ensemble of companions woven into the plot makes it difficult to create a more open-designed game. In general, I would love to see a bit more exploration and openness, but only if it does not sacrifice Bioware's strengths.

That's not really a relevant comparison, is it? Playing football has never been a feature of RPGs. Exploration pretty much always has. And it seems to me their point wasn't not to complain, but to recognise that just because you don't like something, doesn't make it inherently bad or that no one else should like it either.

And make that +1 who is baffled by football.

That something has pretty much always been done seems more like a reason not to do it, than a point in it's favour.

Now I'm just getting the feeling you're being purposefully obtuse. That's not even remotely close to what I was saying, and still not the point.  But, I know a lost cause when I see one, so let's just leave it, shall we?

What your saying is that because "exploration" is an established part of RPGs, it is not similar to including football.

My response is that you're right that it's not the same, but that this only makes it's presence more frustrating.  At least an RPG with football would have the virtue of originality.

NO.

Bethesda has the know-how for open worlds much better than Bioware, then why THEY don´t do a game with 4 member parties then?

Also, not everyone likes wandering random fields for hours entering random caves killing random bandits for random loot. If you want that go play Bethesda games, don´t ruin this for others!

Close this thread, it´s flame bait and adds nothing relevant.

Ha! I don't agree, but that's funny.

The only part I enjoyed about Skyrim was its environment, and wandering around in it. I didn't consider it tedious per se, but I have to admit that I can only play Skyrim for an hour at a time at most, so there might be something to your argument. And, exploration as such only makes sense if you're not pursuing some overriding goal, as you usually are in the DA series.

What about the idea that the player just wouldn't know where he everything he needs is? It's not like he can pull up the dragon's lair on his GPS. Exploration, even arduous and tedious exploration, can be a sort of foundational story element in that respect. And then, in the course of accomplishing a task, you might also come across some optional content.
