This is not a hate thread, btw. I like Ash =) Aside from the above comment that almost made me ****** myself, i've enjoyed listening to what she has to say and am looking forward to exploring her character arc further. Unlike Kaidan, whose rather uninsightful comments haven't ceased to amuse me yet, lol.

I'm not crazy about her, but she's good in my books. I like all the characters in ME. Yes, even Jacob "the priize" Taylor.
Only characters I hate are Kai "rechargingmahsheilds" Leng, Diana "melted by a wax candle" Allers and the Catalyst. No surprises here, heh.

Been playing ME1 for the first time today and just heard Ashley say the above quote. I almost choked on the water I was drinking. I've often seen people on BSN complaining about Ashley's "racism" which I haven't experienced from first-hand until now, but my goodness. That was unexpected...and a little surprising.

Look around where she said that. There's a Keeper nearby. She's supposed to be referring to that, being uncertain if it's sentient (an alien) or not (an animal) Due to a bug, the area that triggers her saying that is too large, thus it's not obvious that she's referring to them.
And of course, people just assume she's talking about all aliens

Ashley is demonized by immature Mass Effect fans as a racist bible-thumping Jesus freak b**** because it decomplexifies her.
To stereotype her is both easier and more compatible with what some fans think a young woman in a futuristic space-exploration settting "should be". Namely that such a person should be atheist, passive, and completely trust of all aliens. This mindframe makes it very difficult to actually engage in any sort of discussion regarding religion or "racial politics" in a near-future space setting.
You cannot allow Gene Roddenberry's narrow interpretation of the future to constrain the discussion and progression of far more reasonable depictions of science-fiction and the near future.

I didn't see any Keepers at the time, so of course I assumed she was talking about all aliens. Don't shoot me.

That's okay. Now you know. And can go back to enjoying one of the most realist and complex characters in the trilogy.
At least until she gets her ME3 outfit...

Let's be honest. Anything non-humanoid would look like an animal to us. IIRC, that was Ashley's first time seeing a keeper.
And anyone else in the same situation (little if any experience w/ aliens, and first time on the Citadel) would feel the same.

I didn't mean to say that I find Kaidan boring, rather that he can be rather, hmm, apparent at times
"This place is big"
Thanks, Lt Obvious =p In any case, I don't hate either Ash or Kaidan. They are not my favourites, but I like them both. It makes the Virmire choice rather difficult for me.

If you haven't played ME3 yet I can see the decision being troublesome. But after seeing ME3 I choose Kaidan every time.Edolix wrote...

Also, what are vorcha? They are sentient, but everyone treats them like animals, so where is the line drawn there? Especially when the asari have proven that vorcha can be highly intelligent if raised in the proper environment where they don;t have to struggle to survive.
Basically, once you start throwing in xenobiology into the mix, things start getting harder to tell at a glance. Espically for a species like ours who have had only 1 sentinet species in exsistence for almost all our lives, and only a few decades ago discovered we aren't alone.

She transforms from a conservative tomboy to one of those hot conservative babes you see on Fox News. I like the change.

Ash is not being racist, that is not a racist comment.
Ash is only saying what we (the audience) is thinking.
I met a Hanar, on the Citadel, and really, without experience, when you meet a Hanar, or see a 'gasbag' how would you know which is animal and which is sentient without any experience?
Ash tells you that she has no experience with aliens. Ash has been grounded and restricted to colony duty b/c her granfather commanded and shanxi, and surrendered to the turians. She has the technical scores to be assigned to a ship, but hatred, of her family name runs high. So Ash has very little knowledge of Alien species.
And in that scene, where she confides her uncertainty to you, about what is what, she is loking to you, her commander, for guidance and reassurance.
It is a touching scene. ME1 Ash is one of the most fleshed out and human characters in the series.

Yes, i've played ME2 and ME3 multiple times. Ash was treated pretty poorly imho (her new appearence really rubbed me the wrong way at first, but I got used to it) however I still find her good to take on missions. My renegade Shepard took both her and Vega almost everywhere with him and had them both use their From Ashes outfits. You know, the ones with the weird visors? It was pretty cool, though I wish I could get a matching visor and armour set for my Shep =p
As Ashley isn't my LI, i'm not too bothered about the lack of ship dialogue with her. She makes up for it a little with her dialogue on missions, though I guess that is small concelation for those who romanced her.

She could have been a great counterpart to EDI in ME3. It would have been interesting to have the perspective of a person with her beliefs to consider in the game balanced with EDI's.
