That's okay.  Now you know.  And can go back to enjoying one of the most realist and complex characters in the trilogy.

At least until she gets her ME3 outfit...

She transforms from a conservative tomboy to one of those hot conservative babes you see on Fox News. I like the change.

I don't dig stupid, but to each their own

I think of it more as "Bad**** marine" to "Systems Alliance Barbie"

Fox has the hottest info babes on TV. Other networks started copying them when they became number 1 in cable news.

Fox just gets the hate it does because it caters to a lower social class audience as opposed to latte drinkers like CNN.

Ashley is one of the more complex characters in the Mass Effect series. She's quite good in ME1, ME2 is squandared and in ME3 suffers from lack of Normandy dialogue (she can get quite talkative during combat missions though)

I'm fairly new to posting, but I've been reading the forums for awhile.

I personally have never understood the Ashley hate. She's a complex character who definitely grows through her exposure to Shepard.

I think it's also important to try putting yourself into the position that the humans are in at the time of the game. I think the best historical analogue is actually 1930's Japan. They were recently (within 1 or 2 generations) exposed to RAPID technological advancement, played technology catchup, expanded rapidly, and are desperately trying to be recognized by the rest of the world powers. The aliens in the ME universe are vastly more alien than the gaijin that the Japanese were squaring off with and judged to be sub-human (an attitude that the rest of the world I might point out held toward them).

With that in mind, I'd say that apart from her religious beliefs, Ash exhibits attitudes that would be typical of most humans without a lot of exposure to the other races in the galaxy, particularly since as a soldier MOST of her exposure would have been as enemies to be wary of.

That sentence doesn't even make sense, tbh. Animals from other planets would technically still be aliens as well.

Fox is also brimming with idiots like Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reiley

She is racist, it's pretty clear from that comment and the constant questioning of all your alien squadmates during debriefs, especially Liara.

That, along with all the constant second guessing and questioning she does throughout the series is why people hate Ashley. If you question Shepard you can be an absolute dick about it if it makes sense, like when Javik does it, but it almost never makes sense when Ashley does it.

Been playing ME1 for the first time today and just heard Ashley say the above quote. I almost choked on the water I was drinking. I've often seen people on BSN complaining about Ashley's "racism" which I haven't experienced from first-hand until now, but my goodness. That was unexpected...and a little surprising.

This is not a hate thread, btw. I like Ash =) Aside from the above comment that almost made me ****** myself, i've enjoyed listening to what she has to say and am looking forward to exploring her character arc further. Unlike Kaidan, whose rather uninsightful comments haven't ceased to amuse me yet, lol.

Well first off, it's bugged. she's only supposed to say that around a keeper. Second she's literally never seen aliens. Ever. she's never been within looking distance of one until nihlus so she literally cannot tell the difference between what's a sapient species and what's considered an animal. Not racist, truth.

She's not a racist, she's a realist.

But I'm not going to rant about how badly they mangled her character in ME3.  :pinched:

Since you brought up Javik, he is definitely the most racist character in the game.  He dismisses almost everything he comes across in the game as "primative" even though by his own admission he is only a soldier and knows nothing about the workings of his own technology.  Even so, I've never seen any discussion of this.  Is it because he is alone and he *got what he deserved*?  He even fits the "progressive" definition by being from the "dominant" species.  By that standard, it's impossible for Ash to be a racist in ME1 because humans are viewed by the rest of the galaxy as needing to be "kept in their place".

If you really look at the characters in the game, Shepard (even most renegade Sheps) is the most progressive thinking of almost all of them.

I entered this thread expecting a redux of so many threads that I saw from the ME1 days back on the BioBoards.

Instead we got an actual insightful thinking and a reasonable discussion. You did good, OP. You did good.

Thank you for admitting the number one reason people hate Ashley and any other character is that dares to question Shepard's actions.

Paragon kiddies don't like it when they're not constantly being assured and soothed that they're always 100% correct.

It all makes me wish BW had made Ashley black. Not done anything differently except give her black skin. I'm pretty sure that would have made people actually think about what she actually said without prejudging her.

Javik is used to seeing these races as primitives.   Its what he is used to, racist? A little bit, but hes not prejudiced against them.  he admits that Shepard and Garrus are both very capable warriors

Technically the animals are aliens too. They don't exactly migrate squirrels and deer to the Presidium.

She also says "alien or human, we're all just animals" at some point.

Anyway, on the topic of Ashley, I never particularly liked her, but in ME1 I still respected her and understood why she had the opinions she did. In all honesty, she was probably one of the better-written characters in that game.

ME3 Ashley, however, is simply awful.

Skin colour doesn't mean people can't be racist.
