I think I might as well go ahead and point out that the statistic of 40% of 'gamers' being female is almost certainly not true.

So you've taken a world census?

One would think.

I understand statistics and their flaws. This is a pretty obvious one.

If its so obvious, then why are you apparently the only person to notice it? Care to explain what it is? Given how gaming has boomed in popularity in the past few console generations, it would t surprise me if the number of females has risen to such a degree.

It's not like women make up half the planet's population or anything- oh wait

The fact the half the population is female is irrelevant.

I'll just repost.

How do they get these statistics? By asking.

For females, 'playing video games' is more-or-less considered a positive trait. It's considered attractive. You go to any video on Youtube with a pretty girl talking about video games and half the comments will be variations of "Why aren't there more girls like you?"

For males, it's more or less the opposite.

Thus any survey asking people if they play video games will almost certainly be overrepresented by females and underrepresented by males.

Also, it doesn't help that players want a big portion of players to be female, as it helps legitimize the medium as mature and developed.

Yup, it's positive 'cause I love that positive sexual harrasment I get nearly everytime I'm online.

No it's not, people tend to not care if males play video games.

Depends on who's doing it.

Doubtful, judging by most of the comments female gamers get by male gamers. Most aren't very encouraging.

Whether you like it or not, the fact is that a 'gamer girl' stereotype exists, and has consequences in culture. I'm sure you can find any number of articles on such a thing. These things have to be taken into account.

Basic statistics.

So you say that playing games is considered a negative trait for a male? I'm calling total horsesh*t on that one. I have literally never in my life encountered somebody of either gender who considered gaming to be a bad trait, not even remotely. Your "thus" statement is just as bad if you're talking about literally any study group worth a f**k.

Is that right? Never in your life have you encountered a stereotype of gamers being nerdy, fat, weak, basement dwellers, acne-ridden, neck-bearded...any of those things?

Actually, no. In all my years, even the jocks and preps talk about Halo and Call of Duty as if it were just another topic. I've made a number of friends by talking to other people about games that we would both play. The Stereotypical gamer was a stigma borne from 80s pop culture and is only really utilized by people from that era.

Also I'm pretty sure men in the military are physically fit.. so your other point is kind of invalid. Though, not every Alliance dude is taking steriods. Joker isn't very muscular. ^_^

A soldier looks like this:

Not this:

I fear you are falling into the trap in thinking that fitness means overinflated muscles. Bruce Lee is the male holotype (the image of which all men should be), he is far from muscler, he has lean muscle mass which is more important for active soldiers rather than dead weight.
Also, do I sense that you are calling the pot black? You throw in a justification for the skewed model of the male physique but you are up in arms about the inclusions of the skewed model of the female physique.
I challenge your justification and say this is the future and natural selection has made big breasts and large asses the norm, large mammory glands to feed children, and good child-bearing hips. So there.
And Traynor was not overly sexualised in appearence.

I'm pretty sure that your modern day soldier wouldn't be thin and unhealthy when they carry 60+lbs of gear everywhere they go. I got big shoulders from carrying my snare drum in marching band, and believe me that thing is light as a feather compared to all of that gear.

Why are you bringing irrelevant natural selection arguments into this? If anything, I challenge you back by saying the opposite is true. Natural selection has made it clear that we aren't a dying species and are not at a dire need to reproduce, thus, we have more issues doing so. We're overpopulated, not underpopulated. We don't need big breasts and fertile hoohas as much anymore.

I'm not justifying the skewed male physique. James Vega is a tank. But he also does pull-ups every time you look at him in the shuttle bay. Kaiden is a biotic. Biotics burn 6,000 calories a day. Of course he's going to be fit. I'm not saying BioWare hasn't done anything unfair to these guys. Not at all. But this topic is about the women, not the men. And last time I checked heels were not standard combat wear.

Does BW make you feel like they're catering more to the male players

Femshep has 3 lesbian romances that go to the end of the game (Kelly, Traynor, Liara)
She has 2 potential straight romances that go to the end of the game (Garrus and Kaiden), one of whom is bi, one of whom can't be romanced without an import.

BIOWARE.
HATES.
WOMEN.

I'm a gay woman, so I find the romance options welcome.  Gay and bisexual people rarely get recognized in video gaming.  That said, Bioware didn't do this for gay and bisexual women...they did it for their straight white male base.  As a result, straight women aren't getting as many romance options, PLUS all women portrayed in this game are highly sexualized (except for krogen, but eve's treatment is a different can of worms).
Even in a "progressive" game like this, women are still portrayed as sex objects.  I would like to see this change.  If gaming companies refuse to treat women as people first rather than objects first, then take away the dignity of the male characters.  Make em show more skin.  Equal objectification or no objectification.

No, women are not portrayed as sex objects. Because of what? Because they're attractive?

Does Liara? Does Tali? By far the two most popular love interests for a male Shepard?

This is a very good post....thank you Heron, I think you have pretty much covered it all.

Truth is the females are objectified in games....as I state earlier, I wasn't too fussed myself about the 'exposure' ....but it is still certainly very evident and unequal.

Her ****** got bigger, what are you missing.  Why else do woman get breast implants, when they're "beautiful" regardless, they want to fit the stereotype, which relates to 'sex objects' or 'sex sells'

Bioware "For Ashely's reappearence in the series, we let her hair down and gave her sex appeal
