One thing to be considered as well, in most cases you get what you pay for.....Quality costs money.... cheaper is usually inferior, lol just go to wal mart and see lol

Meh, I'll just be waiting until the price of the expansion bottoms out to 20$ or so. I encourage everyone else to do the same. If it never gets to 20$ or so, or they do some shiesty crap like package a 'Gold' edition for 40$ I'll just simply never get it.

Why would you care how another spends their money?

You guys do realize that the average game is only 15 hours and costs at least $20 more than this expansion...right?

I mean this is basically getting a brand spanking new game for $20 less.

Exactly

I can understand money being tight, but you're judging an expansion that has at least 3 more months to go before it's released! And where are people getting 15 hours of gameplay from?

$40 is a reasonable price for the expansion if it sticks to the same quality as the core game in gameplay and story. Arbitrarily putting a cash value to game play hours is an inane argument, modern warfare two and assasin's creed two were both released at relatively the same time, should modern warfare two cost 10 times as much as assassin's creed 2 because you can get that much more playtime out of it? That said if I buy the expansion and it plays like a stretched out DLC add-on i'll be very disappointed.

from a poorly translated, mostly inaccurate czech gaming site that initially leaked the story.

meanwhile, back in the real world, fernando melo (that actually works for bioware)  was quoted in an interview by ign that players were expected to reach mid-to-high 30's in levels by completion of awakening.

Shiesty crap?

You may not realize (depending on your age and experience in buying games) but how these things have tended to work, well, pretty much for nearly the history of video games is as follows.

A game comes out.  At release it is the most expensive it will ever be.
Later on (6 months, a year, more or less, depending on how the game sells) the price will drop as sales drop.  An attempt to keep bringing in money on a product they made, and either completely due to already making back their costs and turning a profit OR in a desperate attempt to recover more costs on a game that isn't quite making it yet, the results are the same.  Prices go down over time.
Now in games with sequels, or expansion packs / dlc, or from companies that have other similar games, when time has passed (usually at least a couple years, sometimes longer, in some cases less) and sales have really dropped and/or the game(s) are all but forgotten BUT there has been enough time for new gamers to enter the market that might not have had the chance to experience the game and might even though the game is "outdated" if it were cheaper, the games not only drop more in price but often get put into "collections" like gold or platinum packs, 3 RPGs in One Box, the Interplay Collection, etc.  There you get a bunch of games/expansions/etc usually for far less than just one of the original games cost at its release.

Most of this phenomenon is due to the mentality that so many consumers have of only wanting the newest things, and as such the newest things cost the most (rentals, new movies / games / music cds) and not wanting "old" things (having worked years in video rental I can tell you that the majority of customers did not want anything that was more than a month old, if that.)  Add to the "we want it new" the factors of some games already mostly or entirely recovering their costs as well as the older games get the more date the graphics and gameplay seems to players, and you see why prices drop and games get bundled.

While it would be inaccurate to say that games never get bundled or have prices drop due to poor sales or the market not bearing the price, companies spend much money on market research and price their products pretty accurately most of the time.

But feel free to continue trying to organize your boycott.  Good luck with that.  And that's only mildly sarcastic - seriously, you can get the prices lowered for everyone, more power to you!

Were lucky to be getting an expansion at all. It actually seems really early to get an expansion because the game has been out for only a few months. Well if it turns out that awakening is not worth the $40 at launch then just wait until the price drops or dont buy it at all. I think $30 is a fair deal for an expansion. Its not about justifying the cost of the game with made up comparisons and facts. Just decide if its worth it to you and the economics will speak for you.

It seems early to get an expansion 'cause they still need to fix several bugs.

$30 for 15 hour of gameplay isn't too bad, I might go for that. It's a MUCH better deal that RtO : $5 for 1/2 hours fo gameplay

See the thread

DLC's should be free
for a LOT ;)of discussion of how RtO is worth or not worth $5 for 1/2 hour of gameplay

No idea what the problem is really, expansions have always been around that price or very near, in my British pounds that'd work out at around £20, maybe a little more including VAT of course.

I'm pretty sure most expansion packs of the past and some present ones have been around that price.

And IF it is 15 hours worth of extra gameplay (I doubt it will, Bioware saying 15 hours means 10 or less), then it's still longer than some full price games at £40 or over.

The problem for me is that I'll rather spend that much money on a new game that lasts more than 50+ hours.
And yes, I DO NOT BUY AVERAGE GAMES.
The RPGs that I brought, 50 dollars each, always lasts more than 50+ hours. (Like Fallout 3, Oblivion...)
An expansion that costs almost as much as a whole game but only half of gameplay, for me its not worth it.
BTW, the expansion is no longer 30 for PC version.  Its 40 across platforms.

Then the Gold Edition, GOTY Edition whatever it's called will come out for the Holiday season 2010 with DAO, all the DLCs, plus the expansion for $ 50-60. Much cheaper than if you bought all this separately.

My plan exacly!!:)

The main difference between this expansion and those 'other' games we pay well over 40 dollars for is that they have multiplayer. MP alone adds a MASSIVE amount of replayability.

Honestly if DA:O offered a sort of MP co-op that I could play with my friends, then the expansion would be worth the 40 dollars.

Right now, not so much.

It's made by Bioware, so I know it's going to be high quality and worth the $40 dollars. How do I know this? Because countless times Bioware and their dev-team have proven to me without a doubt that they know how to create a game with just the right story and just the right gameplay to make me 100% glad I purchased their product. The quality of a game can not be measured in playtime alone. The story, the actual gameplay, all the inner-workings involved play a huge factor in the quality of a game. And, considering this expansion is nearly half the price of the original game, I believe the quality more than matches the cost. Of course I have not played the Expansion but, again, BioWare has proven to me that any game they create will be a 100% return on my investment. Call me a fanboy, but past experience speaks volumes.

Huh?
Bioware also made Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station, two of the worst DLCs in the history of videogame DLCs. OK, the former was free, but the latter wasn't. I wouldn't be so sure.

I haven't played Pinnacle Station, but Bring Down the Sky was far from the worst DLC I've ever seen.  Again, Horse Armor?  How about weapon SKINS for Dead Space?  Keys for lockers for costumes in Dead Rising?  Yoda for Soul Calibur?  Shall we bring up Tales of Vespia (where the gaming industry officially enters the gold and XP farming marketplace)?

Try this article - http://www.gamingnex.../Item13210.aspx - where 2 of the 7 listed Bring Down the Sky as their "best" and NO ONE listed any Bioware DLC as worst. (Before DAO, sure, but still.)  Or this one - http://www.1up.com/d...try?bId=9010798 - no Mass Effect there.

In fact, google any list or forum discussing "worst DLC" and, outside of your post here, try and find someone saying that Pinnacle Station or Bring Down the Sky are "two of the worst DLCs in the history of videogame DLC."

The main DA game required several times more code, money and effort than this expansion did.  Yet it was a very popular product that undoubtedly netted EA a tidy profit. The sales from the main game made up for 5 years' worth of engine development, testing, art, writing and music.

I'm not sure where you got such trustworthy data indicating that EA has made a profit from the sales of DA and that it has made up for the 5 years of develepment and content creation so that you can state it in such a way, but I'm afraid that I don't personally have authority or enough knowledge to confirm or deny your statement.

However, I can tell you something about game development. Not all games are expected to recover the money spent on them based on revenues of the game alone. Many intelectual properties (IPs) have a long term plan that includes additional content, expansions, sequels and other products and often the revenues from the sale value is distributed among these products in ways that are not exactly proportional to their individual development costs. This is done to suit the market and the demand for these products. Sometimes a product that is expensive to produce and has little demand is made just to support an IP in certain markets and make sure the IP has a broader audience, gaining more market and therefore more revenue in the long run.

So don't be surprised if some products seem to have greater value than others as this is often a necessary strategy to keep game development sustainable.

I find this post interesting...so....again....why EA and Bioware never talked about dao sales??

Most likely because they don't have collected data for all territories. You have to remember, for a PC centric game like DA:O, NPD data is almost useless as that only covers North America, and the PC is the dominant platform in South America, Europe, Mid East and most of Asia.

Make of that, what you will - but it's a lot of data they actually have to collect.
