I encourage everyone else to do the same

Why would you care how another spends their money?

Same reason why most normal people would care if they see someone making a mistake and try to help.

If you see someone trying to light themselves on fire, step in. If you see someone getting ready to jump off a bridge, step in. If you see someone spending money on something they want and know they will enjoy, might want to let that one go. ;)

All the whining on a brand new expansion that costs $40 is astounding.... If it's really 15 hours of game play not even including replay value (even without), it's less than $3 an hour of quality entertainment. Seems like everyone thinks it's "just a game" that's sooo easy to develop these days and wants it for the cost of a DVD...

But why am I bothering.. if the whining somehow lowers the cost (unlikely) it's win win for me. Until then, I'll gladly shell out $40 for this.

I think the people complaining really need to re-listen to themselves whining. Are any of you actual developers on the level of Bioware and can honestly calculate the cost of producing a AAA expansion pack to an almost consensus top 10 Game of the Year over the PC, Xbox and PS3 and say that it is overpriced? If so I want the break down of the budget and labor costs to prove that $40 is way overpriced.

I'll even give you that it is "only" 15 hours of gameplay. Writers on par with the best published fantasy writers cost money. Professional artists cost money. Top tier voice actors cost money. If all it takes is just some "scripting" to churn out expansion packs how come I don't any DA mods coming anywhere close to content chapters or DLCs offered by Bioware from the DA community? Producing professional, top quality game entertainment is expensive. You also need to make a profit as this is a business. $40 is well within the reasonable price range for a good expansion pack.

Frankly, if you're looking for a rich RPG fantasy experience that uses a robust party system, DA is the only game in town. To continue this game, I will have no problems paying $40 to buy the expansion pack. But if I didn't have the money, I wouldn't **** like it's on the level of murder or something.

Here's the deal. If you really think that it's not worth $40 then DON'T BUY IT. If enough of you don't buy it then the sellthrough numbers tank and then Bioware will be forced to reconsider its pricing model. Use your money on something else. However, those of us who really appreciate that Bioware is supporting 1) the PC and 2) the development of a fantasy RPG with modern 3D graphics, will be buying the expansion pack at that price point because I want to support developers and show that this type of entertainment is worth developing.

It's really that simple. For example, I really wanted to get King's Bounty for almost a year now. Instead, I couldn't justify spending $30.00 on King's Bounty. I waited for a year and then was able to secure King's Bounty and the expansion pack for $11.25. You don't have to buy it when it comes out and sometimes it's worth waiting. If you feel that the DA expansion pack is overpriced, then just don't buy it. The level of hysteria on this board is really ludicrous.

I may be in the minority here, but my first play-through took over 150 hours. I consider myself a veteran RPG gamer so very little of that time was spent on a learning curve. I did spend a lot of time exploring the nooks and crannies, and reveling in the smallest details. I got value for my money so far, and I expect one or two more plays soon, not to mention when I pick it up again just before DA 2 comes out.

I will say though, that we should stay on their heels about maintaining the Bioware quality we have come to expect. I don't mind feeding the cash cow, so long as she keeps earning her medals Posted Image

OK, I've been out of the loop, but when I last checked the forums, the PC version was going for $29.99, right?? So I went to Amazon.com to order the pre-release and it is $39.99, the PS3 and the XBOX on on sale there for $36.99.

So what's up people, when and where did things go astray, yet again! Getting frustrated, price increased, NO RTO, Grrrrrrrr..............

That's insane, Unless they're including DLC's with it, there's no way I'm paying that much for a damn expansion. No way. Learn from Rockstar's example, Bioware and if you're going to have expansion, at least make it worth the money.

The EA Store was selling it with a 10 USD pre-order discount for a bit which came out to 29.95 USD. In fact, you can still grab the physical copy of Awakening for 29.95 USD from the EA Store.

I won´t pay $ 40 for a expansion, I´ll wait, there are good sales every weekend on the major digital stores. for that amount you can probably grab one or two top games just a couple of months afrter release, there´s no point in paying full price for this.

It should be $20 top, and it makes no sense trying to figure out what´s the cost/profit ratio, it´s just what ppl is willing to pay, I don´t care if Bioware loses money at $20, I just won´t pay more than that for a expansion.

It comes down to what people will and will not pay. If you need to charge X amount to make a profit on a product and people are not willing to pay that much for it than you don't make it. If the market will support X amount and it's profitable enough to make the investment in producing it worth while then that's the price point you sell it at.

Me? I'd pay $30 or $40 for a good expansion pack that includes new content, spells, level cap changes, etc. I spend more than that on a nice lunch with my lady. I've probably gotten 300 total hours of entertainment out of DA:O and the currently released DLC - a new expansion that is worth not only its own time but affects how I enjoy a total playthrough of the game? For me that's an easy choice. I spend a lot more a month on coffee on the way to work than I do on games and get a lot less enjoyment and a lot more heartburn for my money.

$1 million in DLC sales by the way - not profit. Sales. Got to wonder how much of that ends up back in EAs pocket, and of that amount how much is profit. Considering they have operating expenses of approximately $2 billion every quarter (three months), the profit from $1 million in DLC sales probably covers their yearly expense in subsidising vending machines for the offices they maintain. I doubt it covers 3 months rent on even one office building. I hope the DLC model pays off in profits for them in the long run though, I like more stuff for my DA:O habit.

First off let me say it's WRONG what they are doing with the PC price. PC games cost less then console games because their CHEAPER to produce. Companies have to pay allot extra for the rights to publish on a console, thus they typically cost $10-$20 dollars cheaper on PC.

Not only is EA breaking the norm for expansion price, then their breaking the norm for PC vs Console price.

Personally I gots the money to afford the expansion, I'll buy it gladly, but people aren't stupid, they know it's on the expensive side, and they'll expect content worth almost full game price. If bioware does not match and exceed that expectation this great franchise WILL suffer.

Sure you can play the game, and charge a little more here and there, but theres a limit as to how far you can push prices... cross that limit and it could create unforeseen consequences.

You can get it for 40 dollars! You should not whine about it, it's not that much. To put it in perspective, the awakening cost here (in Finland) 65 euros (that's about 90+ dollars....)

edit. ahem, doublechecked the euros --> dollars and it seems i was being modest...

Another quick question concerning awakening, even though it might not be excatly on-topic. I have the "physical" copy of origins, so will I be able to install the "non-physical" copy on awakening in there? I mean, if buy and download awakening from EA store (for example), is it fully compatible with my copy of dragon age, which I bought from local store?

For what I understand, the games you buy from downloading stores require somekind of application to run. Does that interfere here?

And sorry about my relatively poor english, it quite early and I haven't got my cup of coffee yet...

Ok I can't go through all these pages so I'll just say this and be done.

1) Not everyone can finish this game in 75 hours or less some will take 110+ hours to finish it so just because some are superstar gamers doesn't mean DA:O doesn't have enough gameplay. Not everyone can spend 10+ hours a day playing the game and to finish playing the game it may take more than two or 3 months of playing

2) If spending $30 on a game that you enjoy is too much, then perhaps you can't afford it and should not be spending your time playing games anyways.
