Yes, but either success or failure was an automatic conclusion. If you chose to play, you won or lost regardless of subsequent actions.

So.. it was exactly like DAO then?

Prescripted cRPGs are prescripted.

Everyone better not be Bi. That was one of the laziest things I have ever seen in a video game.

It wasn't lazy, it was intentionally to give everyone a fair amount of LI. They could for example make one gay and one bi like Dragon Age Origin. In the end, it comes down to limited resources, and they wouldn't be able to give everyone the same number of LI. At this point, this thread is gonna get locked if the conversation keeps verging on bisexuality.

I'm a little confused, actually.

We have a F/F romance thread, a M/M romance thread, and a M/F romance thread where both straight men and straight women are pitching their ideal guy or girl.

And now this thread (which, no harm done, OP)

.... wouldn't it be a whole lot more productive and integrative to just have one thread for players who romance women, and one thread for players who romance men?

I mean, I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I don't see the problem with sharing the squee with gay guys. They're more likely to share my excitement than straight ones.

Haha, I'm pretty sure there's currently a F/M romance thead *and* a M/F romance thread, besides this new thread.

Sharing threads for male or female romances would probably be fine if it's a necessity, but right now there's not much to talk about other than speculation, and it's interesting to me, at least, to hear what different people would like as far as romances.

Yay, Cullen. SQUEE!!!

j/k :P

I think it would be the best solution to have a male and female LIs thread, but sometimes, you can encounter some people say some homophobic stuffs or making the whole thread about morality. A thread similar to the one you describe has happened before but it was closed due to the flaming by those opposing S/S romance in the game.

It'd be the first female LI. Actually, it'd be the first LI in DA in general, since in both DAO and DA2 every LI has some kind of problem.

A personality flip to Morrigan would be nice or maybe Aveline?

That would be a good romance option imo.

Bioware always has at least 2 options for male PC , so his right hand would compete for attention as well.

im just hoping for one that doesnt take till the end of the game to lock down and is more involved than what we have normally got, i found the morrigan one probably the best of anything bioware has done to date including anything from the mass effect series and the twists asn turns to alaister where pretty nice.

I also liked the way in the me3 omega download that you could sort of influence Aria, i wouldnt mind seeing something like that looked into in more detail when it comes to character relations

I have to say I found the <3 icons to be "I win" buttons for romance. Trying to work out what to say to Lelianna and Morigan in DA:O was some of the most fun I had with the game. With DA2 I just always picked the <3 whenever it presented itself for a character I wanted to romance and it led to success.

Unless you attempted to romance Varric and/or Aveline. They both had <3 icons available in their conversations, and neither of the attempts could be successful at all.

Yes, but either success or failure was an automatic conclusion. If you chose to play, you won or lost regardless of subsequent actions.

So it is entirely not an "I win" button, because it didn't always lead to success. Glad we agree.

What it *is* is clarity of intention. You don't know whether it is a guaranteed success, or a guaranteed failure unless you metagame, just like you didn't know whether the conversation choice in DAO was going to result in success or failure unless you metagame. The only difference is that there is that DA2 has an icon to identify it, so that players don't accidentally choose it when they don't intend to initiate a romantic response.

While not exactly a fresh observation, I think it's sorta worth mentioning how DAO more or less allowed you to hurl plentiful helpings of abuse at your prospective partner yet buy back their affection with presents. So in a sense, DAO lacked any real kind of "lose" scenario, unless you count the inability to engage in a polyamorous relationship.

"Hey Alistair, Duncan was a piece of **** who deserved to die.  Here's a half-eaten piece of moldy cake.  Let's bang in the tent."

Totally possible in DAO.

I'm probably pretty alone with this, but I actually *liked* the ninjamances. sometimes people fall in love with you even if you aren't interested -- hell, even if you haven't shown any interest, it's happened to me at least twice before. I don't see any reasons why the characters shouldn't behave like that also. And since it's easy to still remain friends after the misunderstanding is cleared up, the only thing that actually bugged me about the ninjamances were the assumptions made by the characters that you're together (both from the one who ninjamances you and your potential actual LI).

And I'm pretty sure that the DAO's LIs could break up with you if you said something really nasty, regardaless if you intended to or not. The only ways I can think of doing that in DA2 is either if you explicitly choose the broken heart icon (in which case it was intentional) or, in Anders' case, if you sold Feynriel's soul to Torpor.

This is false. In DA2, you could end a relationship:

1. By selecting a heartbreak icon (explicitly ending it)
2. By choosing someone else who takes priority (Anders and Merrill are romantic juggernauts and choosing either of them will auto-end any other relationship).
3. (Isabela only) by giving her to the Arishok at the end of act 2
4. (Fenris only) by not going to do his quest in act 2 after he asks you to.

I'm not sure about the Anders and the Torpor deal. It's possible, but I don't remember.

In any event, there are other outs besides explicitly choosing a heartbreak option. It's the exact same system as DAO, it just doesn't have the "Surprise! You're together and everyone knows it but you!" element that DAO had, or a "confrontation" scene where you're forced to choose one or the other.
