Make the Inquisitors like Space Marines ... passionless.

So pretty much like every other recent Bioware protagonist?

The gifts weren't brought up to evaluate them, they were brought up in the context of DA2 being accused of having provided the player with I-Win romance buttons.

You don't have to take them because they're there, just like you don't have to spam gifts if your character wouldn't do so.

Well, you'll have to choose the flirt options to initiate the romance. How many do you have to choose btw? IIRC there's even an achievement for it, but I tend to flirt a lot with my intended LI anyway, so I'm not sure how much of it is required. And if the one you were flirting with was actually an LI, it *was* an I win button, for the most part. As I said before, there was more of a chance to screw it up in DA:O with things like telling Alistair that he's a naive fool after the Goldanna quest which cuts the romance off.

The flirt icon is actually one of the things I disliked most about the icons -- it was a lot more fun to have to think about what my LI would be receptive to, and a lot more interesting to have a character decide that I suck for being an ass and he isn't interested in a relationship with me any more, rather than have the broken heart icon (which, judging from paraphrases, was an outright rejection, anyway.)

I always refer to the Morrigan romance as one that would be difficult to do with DA2's system.

There is a point where Morrigan asks you about love and your thoughts on it. In order to continue the romance, you need to answer with a "romance is an illusion" or some such line. The incorrect answer, of saying love is important, will lower her approval and possibly end the romance.

Would the line saying love is an illusion be a heart icon? Would the one saying love is important be a heart break icon? Doesn't that seem... a little dichotomous?

Later, Morrigan begs you to break up with her, that she can't take being in love with you anymore. If you say no, she stays in the relationship, but warns you that the consequences are not her doing. If you say yes, the relationship is over.

Would be saying no to save the relationship be a heart icon? An "X" or No icon? A "check" or Yes icon? You are saying no to her request, which means yes to the relationship. And vice versa.

I suppose the easy answer to all of that would be "Morrigan's romance would have been rewritten to make more sense with the given icons" but... if writing is beholden to the icon systems limitations, doesn't that mean that the icons themselves are potentially limiting story and (in the theme of this thread) romance outcomes?

You are right actually.  Morrigan's romance would actually be quite hard to do in DA2 because the "I Win" button wouldn't actually always lead to actually winning in the romance.

I personally hope that Bioware doesn't go for the 'every party member is bisexual' thing.  It's jarring to an RPG playerand shows slopppiness on the game developer's part in my opinion.

I personally don't see the love icon as an "I Win" button in the romance.  It just shows that you are flirting with that character.  In DA2, it did do that to an extent due to the fact that relationships just didn't seem harder to maintain.  In fact there didn't seem to be any troubles in any relationship other than obvious ones that would end the relationship.

I'd prefer a mature woman. I'm not into the young maidens in distress, nor the crazy feminist ones. Wynne, if you took away her lecturing, actually had a good personality. Was considerate and mature, take a few decades off of her, throw in a little humour (so she doesn't take herself too serious, though she did make jokes about her age, which I loved) and you got a nice romance options for guys like me.

*shrugs*

I'm a straight female but I do straight male romances sometimes (as in my char is male and romances a female NPC) and the straight female LI's I liked from recent BioWare games were the ones that were intelligent, independant, strong, and not a clingy, whimpering schoolgirl.

Liked: Morrigan, Ashley(ME1 only), Aveline, Jack
Didn't like: Leliana, Merril, Liara
Meh: Isabella, Miranda, Tali

(1) Good sense of humor

(2) Independent

(3) Healthy

(4) Not very religious

It's surprising how few fit these simple broad criteria.

That would require marriage.:D

Though an awesome concept, I think that BioWare need to lay of the uncontrollable events for a while. Especially for romances.

Banging her seems to be the only reacuring thing in my profiles.  If I can't do it with my Inquisitor, it just wouldn't feel like a Dragon Age game.

this is not just for m/f: one romance that takes as much work to trigger as Carth Onassi in KotOR. Took me 3 tries. Brutal. But I felt I had achieved something there.

Providing the game doesn't make everyone bisexual/herosexual again. What kind of romance would you want? A woman similar to Morrigan? A complete personality flip to her? Or some other kind of character?

Morrigan, Velanna, Aveline, Cassandra Penthaghast and to a point Samara ( ME 2 ). All this women have strong will, independent and not afraid to kick your ass when you mess up with them. I don't mind getting my ass kicked, if I'm wrong. But they must also know how to persuade, tease, seduce and be intimate. Someone who will constantly concern for my character, always be there when I need her and always willing to listen when I want to talk something. ( All DA 2 companions didn't meet this qualification and the restricted one dimensional interaction only make it even worse. )

Someone along the lines of Aveline or Samara. Aveline listens to you and checks in on you, not putting too much of herself into every conversation and Samara is genuinely intelligent and wise, not putting her personal problems aside from her loyalty mission (which was more out of necessity due to her code, the fact Morinth was her daughter was a convenience).

Both women are tough and no-nonsense without being an ice queen (Morrigan, Miranda) or a tsundere (Morrigan to a point, Jack, Bastila, Jaheira, Viconia, Isabella to a degree). I get tired of the "I'm so strong yet I'm really insecure and broken" trope with female LIs (overdone imho). I'd be quite happy with a secure female LI whether she's endured quite a bit (as did Aveline and Samara for losing family and sacrificing much) or basically is a fresh slate with resolve. (Mind you, insecurity is indeed a good tool for storytelling but I think it's been overdone and rehashed to the point where not having such a romanceable character with bittersweet baggage may just be a welcome addition).

Definitely love the idea of a female knight (I pitched this idea in a general female romance thread) who embodies a traditional paladin, adheres to a code BUT...understands the need for the greater good and isn't held back by petty devotions.

An elven Samara at that ^_^

Either a human Orlesian chevalier who functions as a gorgeous lady knight in shining armor with chivalrous code or an elven mystic-mage who functions as a strict adherent to the Dalish pantheon. Of course, with an elegant accent and demeanor befitting such an honorable woman.

The kind with domestic responsibilities, like cooking, cleaning, etc. Less of a dangerous relationship that way.

If we got a cute female dwarf to romance in DAIII I'd roll a male protagonist just for that reason. :)

... even if the devs think that's weird or fetishy -- just being real. It won't happen anyway.
