Start the game in multiplayer, where you can generate a full party of your own.
Save the game once created.
Move the save game from mpsave to save folder.
Load game as single player.
Enjoy!

Grond0 is right in suggesting that you play the game in single player mode as it is then far less buggy than in multiplayer.
However, if you want to create other players at any stage, just copy the game over to MPsave, create new characters, and copy back to the save folder to play in Single Player mode again.

Probably the problem is that when you start a multiplayer game you need to be in windowed mode. You can do that through config, but the easiest way is to press alt+enter when you get to the original menu screen. You only need to be in the window to create the game - once started you can press alt+enter again to return to full screen (though you will probably just save and exit in order to move to single player mode anyway).

Thanks that worked but i wonder why do you need to be in window mode?
I also noticed i had to wait a few seconds(it doesnt happen right away...like i thought it would).

That's the reason why Grond0 suggested copying the game into the save folder.
I don't know why it happens. Just a bug I think, and since there is a work-around nobody has bothered to fix it.
