So, how to beat Sarevok and his fans? I googled, but strategies I found didn't work. Perhaps I fail to execute them well.

The biggest problem is Angelo. He uses Mirror Image that can be dispelled, however, I don't understand what other buffs he has that my two mages and a cleric fail to dispel. And he does use some, because even if I have three strong characters beat on him, nothing happens. They can't even interrupt his spellscasting, so eventually he casts Chaos or Domination, and from this point the battle is totally lost.

So Angelo stumps me. Multiple dispels from three characters didn't help to relieve him of his strange invulnerability to physical damage. Or maybe he has so many hitpoints that they have to hack at him for minutes to deal any damage at all. But he kills them faster than that.

I also tried strategies like a hasted character running around traps to take out Sarevok, but Sarevok is fast and kills him eventually, without looking too hurt from traps. I tried summons, which are quickly slaughtered by him, too. So the issue lies with Angelo, it would be doable to fight Sarevok and Tazok with whatever method, if not for the interference of Angelo's powerful magic. It's Angelo who ultimately turns the tide of the battle.

Ok I probably confused Angelo with Semaj. Just spotted a guy shooting denotation arrows.

To answer your question, people need to know if you are playing vanilla, Tutu, SCS etc. as the differences are phenomenal.

Semaj is a high level spellcaster so will have stoneskin up as a matter of course. As he is higher level than you dispel magic won't work on him (depending on your installation you might have a chance, but it won't be a good one anyway).

It makes the battle much easier if you can separate Sarevok from his supporters. Try using an invisible mage to go in alone to trigger Sarevok's conversation, then retreat out of sight and use a fireball. Sarevok may well come alone to investigate. Note that it takes quite an exceptional character (using buffs) to be able to stand up to Sarevok in melee. However, he has no distance attack so you can run him round while shooting / using spells on him. Alternatively just use successive charges from wand of monster summoning to keep him occupied while you finish him off.

If you want to take them all on at once you need some form of magic protection for your characters. Either use green scroll (that can't be dispelled) or have potions ready to take as soon as their dispel magic has been used up.

Potions of invisibility can be fun to use as well. You might want to try showing them just one character. Run Sarevok round until you're targeted with either an area damage spell from Semaj or arrows of detonation from Angelo then take the potion. As soon as you disappear Sarevok will turn on the friend that damaged him and attack!

The vanilla game with the expansion.

Party:
my char (mage 9)
Imoen (9 thief)
Branwen (cleric 8)
Kivan (ranger 8)
Minsc (ranger 8)
Dynaheir (mage 9)

Strangely, the enemy mage is never able to successfully dispel magic from my party. I don't know why. They've basically chugged all potions available, like absorption, fire, giant strength, free movement, etc. And these effects do not get dispelled by the enemy mage. (Although I was not aware that Dispel Magic is an AOE spell, so once I accidentally had Dynaheir strip the whole party of buffs, while the enemy mage stayed blissfully unaffected).

How do you keep your party from being "held" and mentally dominated? I'm pretty sure I've seen no potions or spells for that.

Unfortunately, I can't manage to separate Sarevok from others. I show him one character, I only see him alone, but the mage teleports to my party right away. Besides, he teleports to the party that is basically standing near the door, not to the char I'm talking to Sarevok with. He must be omniescient :)

OK, I'll be trying more.

Edit: The difficulty setting is "core rules", the slider in the middle.

You can protect a character from Chaos with charges from a Geenstone Amulet (available for sale in Ulgoth's Beard).

Arrows of Dispelling is probably your best bet in Vanilla, especially combined with spamming of Monster Summoning wand. If Semaj's buffs get dispelled, he' s toast quickly against your archers. Dispelling arrows is good against Sarevok too, because it strips his innate Haste-like ability.

What happens if both your Mages drop a Cloudkill from outside visual range of the enemies?

Potion or ring of freedom will protect against hold. Potion of clarity will protect against charm / domination. Potion of magic shielding will give you automatic saving throw success against anything. Scroll of magic protection will protect against any magical attack.

Try not showing him any character, i.e. have someone approach him invisibly to trigger his conversation and then retreat out of sight and use an area of effect spell like fireball or cloudkill.  As Jianson says then Semaj is easy to kill even if he does teleport in if you target him with arrows of dispelling (as you're playing with a party).

Arrows of dispelling don't help against Semaj, for some reason they do not dispel his magic. Potions of free movement don't help against being held, all my chars drank them and were still getting held.

Jianson, in that case Sarevok comes to talk, and then Semaj teleports to my party. Maybe that happens because I send in a character to come from the right, but when she came from the left Semaj also teleported.

Anyway, I finally managed to win the battle, using the wand of summoning. Both my mages can't use Conjuration magic, so I wasn't using it throughout the game, but fortunately kept the wand just in case. It was sort of cheap. My mage used the wand, Branwen summoned skeletons (does it make sense for a good cleric to use such necromancy?!), and Sarevok couldn't get out of the circle of summoned monsters. I used my mage to cast multiple Malisons on him and then various stunning spells, while Imoen was shooting arrows. Minsc and others were bravely standing nearby and watching :) (Btw I feel too much shame for killing animals, that's why I dislike using summons greatly)

So cheesy and evil.

As for the mage, what made him easy to beat was Branwen's Invisibility Purge. I finally figured out that he was using some spell like Sanctuary or something, although it doesn't make much sense for a mage. After that Minsc and Kivan quickly finished him off.

The third guy never came out to fight :)
