SoA & ToB, which one to click?

I've almost completed BG1, so now I've got  Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal and installed them both. Thankfully the game launches and now that I've fixed the issue with scrambled text in the menu I don't understand what I should click to start a new game... Should it be Shadows of Amn or Throne of Bhaal? Are the two separate games? If not, will I play the "full game" if I click Throne of Bhaal? Or is it a separate area?

And I realize this question is dumb. But googling doesn't help. It describes new contents of ToB, but nothing I've found suggests whether they're added on top of SoA after installation or you can only access them in full if you play ToB.

The game offers:

- Play SoA with the new area of the Watcher's Keep dungeon
- Play ToB with all the new areas including the Watcher's Keep dungeon

I don't get this. Sounds like SoA lacks some areas from ToB...

Basically, what should I click to play the whole game with all contents and updated game mechanics? :)

You choose Shadows of Amn. That is the main BG2 game, whereas Throne of Bhaal is its expansion, like Tales of the Sword Coast is for BG1.

You can import your BG1 character to BG2 as well. But IIRC you need to copy a file from the BG1 folder to BG2. Others will probably point out exactly how to do this.

Thanx!

I just checked importing by copying the save folder with the last save into BG2, it works. Although I was surprised when my mage lost all her spells. She had so much more spells memorized than the quantity offered at the start of BG2.

It's an obvious remark, especially as you have already completed BG1, but remember to at the very least patch BG2/TOB, and preferably install the fixpacks!

And enjoy! Youre about to embark on my favourite game ever.

Last time I attempted to patch BG1 it turned out that it was already a patched version, so now I'm a bit wary of patching :)

Can you please tell me, though, what could be the cause of my PC turning off frequently during the game? I had this problem with BG1, and unfortunately quick testing showed that it persists within BG2. I don't want to open a separate topic in tech-help yet, because I'm unsure that such an issue can be helped at all. It's like something is incompatible between the game and my PC. The only other game I had a more or less similar problem with was Drakensang, but it wasn't as bad, each time I quit Drakensang my PC would freeze and I'd have to restart it. That problem was solved by not quitting the normal way, if I used Ctrl+Alt+Delete to finish the process my PC wouldn't freeze! But with BG I don't know what to do, because the PC just turns off randomly.

So I don't know if it even makes sense to post about it, probably it's not possible to pinpoint what the issue is. Reasons can be too varied. These (BG1, BG2) are the only games my PC has such a problem with, that's why I'm sure that it's not just PC going bad. But of course I dislike it turning off, because hardware can get damaged, etc (luickily it's old enough that's why it doesn't bother me that much, hopefully I'll be buying a new one next year).

Blimey, no idea on that one I'm afraid.

I'd patch them just in case if I were you, I don't think it hurts if you patch an already patched game so nothing to lose. And I'd strongly recommend the BG2 Fixpack from Gibberlings 3.

It may be that BG stresses a component of your pc that your other apps/games don't.

I had an old pc that used to cut out without a blue screen or similar. I can't remember if I tracked it down to overheating processor (are cooling fans working and clear of dust, check CPU temperature in BIOS on startup) or a failing power supply.

Re patches. The disk games need patching, only one patch per game (which one depends on whether you have the TotSC/ToB expansions installed). GOG doesn't need patching.

Minus this issue, BG2 is the buggiest game I've EVER seen... Quick spell slots do not function, and now I ran into a bug when people around stopped responding. For example, I can't talk to Aerie in the circus, the message is "Aerie appears busy". My chars couldn't talk to peasants nearby, either, they weren't hostile but "appeared busy", too. I solved the issue by attacking them with my mage, but Aerie's issue can't be solved like that. If my party attacks her, she turns hostile and dies in the fight. I can't be more specific because this forum doesn't allow spoilers, but you know what I mean and why it's important.

It certainly sounds like you are unpatched..reference....the start of the Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal Patch Version 26498 ReadMe...for which I have highlighted some that sound relevant to your issues.

* Two new items added!
* Fixes the NPC "X appears busy" bug associated with Win2K and WinXP.
* Fixes the problem where WinDoctor would erase the BG2: Throne of Bhaal registry entry.
* Fixes the incorrect calculation of the assassin backstab modifier when importing an assassin character from Shadows of Amn to Throne of Bhaal.
* Fixes the party-splitting bug where players would make the in-game transition from the end of Shadows of Amn directly into the start of Throne of Bhaal and have some characters left behind in Shadows of Amn.
* Fixes a stutter bug experienced by some players that caused the game to pause momentarily every few seconds while playing.
* At level 20, the Jester bardsong ability also gains stun and slow in addition to confusion.
* New keymap file fixes the problem where certain keys could not be assigned.  Some of these keys are now no longer assignable from the config program due to localization reasons (though can be assigned manually - read on).  This new keymap file will replace your current keymap.ini file which means that you will lose all of the key mappings if you have made any.  Your current keymap.ini will be renamed to keymap.ini.ToBpatch.backup when the patch is run.  To restore all your key mappings after running the patch, copy the entire section from keymap.ini.ToBpatch.backup and replace the one in keymap.ini for the following sections:
    [Keymap Page]
    [Keymap Actions]
    [Keymap Miscellaneous]
    [Keymap Quick Slots]
    [Keymap Priest Spells]
    [Keymap Wizard Spells]
    [Keymap High Level Abilities]
* High level Sorcerer characters who already have 10th level spells from SoA, will no longer permanently lose them when reselecting their spells upon transition/import into ToB.  In fact, they need no longer need to reselect any of their spells.  Lower level sorcerers (below 2.95 million XP) will still have to reselect their spells, but this gives them the chance to choose different spells to use in ToB.
* The icon and the kit description for the Blade now have identical name for the same ability.
* Fixes the bug where dialogues for unfinished quests from SoA would show up in ToB.

Thank you. I patched TOB and used BG2 Fixpack, that solved Aerie issue and hopefully quick slot issue :) Also meanwhile I found out that you can learn your game version in the readme file, it really was unpatched.
