I should also mention that all Vanguards (yesN even Krogans an Batarians) can be stunned by the following attacks which WILL temporarily prevent charging:

Geth Prime - drone, autocannon
Geth in general - some melee attacks (animation-dependent, when you hit charge determines if it fires)
Geth Hunter - shotgun
Geth Bomber - grenade detonation from any direction except head-on, melee zap

Phantom - Occasionally cannot charge immediately when hit by melee (not always). NOTE: If magnet-handed back toward her, mash charge, it often fires before execution.
Atlas - Direct rocket hit anywhere but head-on.
Dragoon - Smash anywhere but head-on (also animation impaired).
Guardian - melee strike (not always).
Turret - After ramping to full firing speed, though you won't notice because it's pretty much a guaranteed down except for nova-cancelling or krogan/batarian heavy melee.

Banshee - Nova attack, scream.
Brute - Pounce (not to be confused with charge).
Ravager - After any impact from shots.
Marauder - Elbow of doom melee attack.
Cannibal - melee hug, but not always

Seeker Swarm - Bioware's personal F U to vanguards.
Scion - Pulse cannon, grenades if not head on.
Praetorian - Melee strikes.
Collector troops and Captains - some melee strikes.

Most vanguards have some head-on stagger resistance (kroguard and batguard have higher levels), but all are equally stunned by Primes, Ravagers, and Scions, and basically any of the above attacks delivered from the side and behind.

Posting from phone, cannot edit last post to correct - kroguard is not staggered by Ravager shots. All others can be. Kroguard also has better resistance to head-on Prime and Scion shots. All others - even Batguard - are usually stunned by these attacks, particulalry the Scion cannon.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but the only time I ever experience a non working Biotic Charge is when an enemy is executing an animation that cannot be interrupted.

For example
- When an enemy is getting up
- The middle part of a Brute charging
- Some part when the enemy is recovering from stagger
- The enemy is doing heavy/light melee
- The Phantom back flip (there's a time frame where you can't charge her)
- A Prime casting a turret or a drone

The best example to "see" it in game is to use Shadow Strike. It uses the same mechanic for the "charge" part as Biotic Charge and suffer from the very same problem. And you cannot Shadow Strike when the enemy is doing an animation that cannot be interrupted. If you watch for this when using Shadow Strike, you'll find it obvious after 3 waves.

As long as you have a line of sight and the enemy isn't in an animation that cannot be interrupted, you can charge with no problem, even with lag. Every point you mention can be explained by my own explanation. That doesn't make your explanation wrong, I might be wrong after all, but I'm gonna trust my own experience on this since I never got into a situation I couldn't explain by the "animation" issue.

Solution:  Step FORWARD.  Don't sidestep or dodge, press your forward key/button/stick once or twice to move away from the obstruction. Typically this bug occurs when your back is against a wall and slightly clips into it.  You can't see this because of the way the game camera is rendered, but part of the charge animation seems to be a hunch downward and back (it's more noticeable on some characters than others).  Most of the time this doesn't impair charge, but sometimes it leaves you mashing charge with nothing happening.  Hence, step forward.

Solution: Fire your weapon ONCE.  If your clip is empty, use light melee instead.  Sometimes charge just glitches out because you've used another power.  This reliably fixes it.

Solution:  Shoot your weapon again.  If empty, reload or use light melee.

Solution:  Fire one shot, then mash charge.  It'll work.  Reloading sometimes locks up charge.

Solution:  Like the weapon solution above, fire your gun.  Charge will work again.

1- Moving will take enough time for the animation to finish, allowing you to charge again
2- Firing your weapon will take enough time for the animation to finish, allowing you to charge again
2- Heavy or Light melee will take enough time for the animation to finish, allowing you to charge again
3- Reloading will take enough time for the animation to finish, allowing you to charge again

I play a lot of VANGUARD, and almost never host.  From my expereince I'd agree with the above statement for over 80% of charge failure.  In particular I've noticed this is the case when scions are executing their animation a split second before firing  (he's gonna fire, I'll charge... hammer button 20 times and get blasted down because charge does not go off), and when enemies are meleeing (not actually staggered yet).

As a side note to charging, I have noticed I can charge with impunity any "insta-kill" enemy as long as they have no shield/barrier.  Conversely I have a HIGH number of insakills from charging Banshees, Praetorians while they still have barrier/sheild remaining.  Charge then instantly back off (partiularly with the Assari vanguard), then charge again after pumping a few rounds.

Wow very nice info. I never realized that being up against the wall could mess it up so.

I guess that's just the scrub in me talking!

Nice thread OP!
