Why would I romance someone I found unattractive?
And why would you think that ugly and unattractive are the same thing? I know of quite a few people that aren't really pretty (quite the contrary) yet still are undeniably attractive for this reason or that. Not to mention the opposite: the oh-so-pretty-yet-bland-and-hideous-in-every-other-way people are pretty common.

For the purposes of romantic interest, the two are interchangable. Physical beauty is subjective, and the use of romance implies more than just a one night hookup based on looks. If someone has gotten me to the point of romantic attraction, then I will not find them ugly. If, on the other hand, I find them ugly after getting to know them, then they are unattractive.
So why would I romance someone I found unattractive?

So you want Tali?Emzamination wrote...
If she had a nice body, yeah, totally. Just throw a mask or bag over her face, keep the room very dark during sex scenes and it's all good. Nothing to it.

Tali? 3 fingers, 3 toes, fish gils running down her body tali? This tali, bro? I suggest you stop sniffing lyrium. Your eyes seemed to be as messed up as hers.

That's a fair position. However, OP's question was:
"If all the LI in-game (both men & women) looked like utter trash, would you still romance him/her anyway?"

Does Tali really count as an ugly character? She clearly always had a hot body under that suit.
As for the topic of the thread: I guess it depends. Are we talking "Mileena from Mortal Kombat" ugly or are we talking "Aughra from the Dark Crystal" ugly?

I'd be way more likely not to romance an attractive character whose character or romantic arc I didn't care much for -- someone like Merrill. She's beautiful and I love her voice actress but she's too girlish and saccharine for me so I'm not interested in romancing her.

Hmm. At that point, I suppose it becomes relative. When everyone "looks like trash", you reset your baseline expectations for physical beauty. I thought most of the people in DA:O looked like they were made of slowly melting wax, including the various LI options, and yet I found reasons to romance one of them. So the answer is apparently 'yes'.
As you illustrated before, beauty(or ugly) is certainly more than skin deep.

If you grew up with the image that ugly people are weak, evil and less intelligent... That might add to their appearance in your subconcious. We too often link the appearance of someone with their personality without knowing them. It's a reality. It's what we call being shallow. You look at the cover before giving it a chance. From personnal experience.. Any date only based on appearance will end very quick or be very pathethic.
Of course in video game I also roleplay a game character. So i often roleplay a vain, superficial and a ****.. I would just than pick the plastic over the package.
