I'd like to see a female romanceable party member who has less than average or at least average looks. Or even any female party member like that - the only example I can think of is Shale, who is just a golem.

Before something brings it up - I think Aveline is very good looking, but even if you don't agree, she can't be romanced anyway.

Just thought that while that may be interesting to some, many people are annoyed if characters dont look good, video games are like TV everyone looks good unless there is a point to being not beautiful. I know someone who could not romance Leliana until he made her blonde, not shallow, but a non pretty character while unique is a bit off putting to many people

I don't know, really. It depends on what ugly means, I guess. They don't have to be a super model -- I romanced Thane and Garrus in ME, and would've romanced Aveline if possible(not ugly, but not traditionally beautiful/feminine). But if they are fat, have boils covering their face, and rotten teeth? Probably not.

To be fair, rotten teeth are not a matter of ugliness, but a matter of hygiene.

If someone's born with an ugly face, it's not exactly their fault. But being unclean is entirely their fault and unwilligness to wash seems to be more a matter of personality than looks.
Uncleanliness is an absolute no-go, both in video games and real life.
Really, the only excuse for being a little dirty is if they've been running all over Thedas and fighting off soldiers and Darkspawn and just didn't have the opportunity to get a bath yet. And even then, it should be corrected as soon as possible.

I actually does not think that uncleaness is a no go in a game like Dragon Age where the characters are traveling around without  any method of proper bathing. I mean how clean do you think anyone in da:o actually is? Proper bathing in medivial times is a privilege, the best thing we can get is properly some water to the face and hair and most intimate parts. (And that is assuming that the water is clean enough for that I wouldn't put it in my mouth for starters). Tooth hygiene is highly unrealistic in such games (and some people have naturally week teeth which can take anything before getting bad).

In mass effect they have dentist, there is really no excuse.

You're right, but this is one of the cases where I say 'screw realism, it's just a video game'.
As far as I'm concerned, the group always makes camp in places that just so happen to always have a hot spring nearby...>.>
Realistically speaking, they'd have to stink like hell after spending their day practically rolling around in sweat and gore (unless the Mabari licked them clean...then they smell like dog spit), but then again DA has people running around with make-up (*coughgreeneyeshadowcough*), throwing fire balls and the PC or their companions never ever get sick or pregnant.

why should someone get pregnant (at least if they do not want to - remember: we are in world that has magic and herbal-stuff that can surely prevent that (like a herbal-pill)

even more it is the wrong kind of game for that (it's Dragon Age - not the sims: fantasy rpg)...i could see an adoption happening (say an orphan mage/orphan noble or something like that, that you take into your household (you get a castle as far as we know)) but no pregnancy...it just does not fit IMHO and - let's face it - do we really want that kind of baggage in a game we play for enjoyment?...for me that is a clear "NO WAY"

greetings LAX
ps: and even if not - at least for me - i do not want pregnancy in any way or form in video-games (!)...(note: i do not want children in reality either - didn't want them when i was in a relationship the last time and i certainly do not want them now...i think children are (by being children - it is not their fault being like that because they are children after all) obnixious, dirty, loud (i have relatives that have children (4 and 5 years old) and think i am an overly large teddybear to play with, to "drag" around etc. and after taking two hours of that i want to scream bloody murder - or flee the scene!) and needy (of course they are, they can not keep themselves alive after all and need us grown-ups) etc. and that is a total turn-off for me (i can tolerate them - at least if they are no longer babies, but babies...well i just do not like them)

Oh quit trying to impose your views on others. It is your assumption that herbs & magic prevent pregnancy. Morrigan & wynne were both mage & master herbalist and even they got pregnant after just one time.

I don't wish in-game pregnancy for myself either, but if others wish to start familys with their romance interest, then that is their maker given right to have such notions. It is not your place to dictate what sort of going ons & what not are appropriate or inappropriate to relations that are not your own.

Wynne has stated that mages have ways to prevent pregnancy.

Wynne: I honestly don't know, Alistair. He was... taken from me. Such births are seldom, as there are ways to prevent it, but it does happen. And any child born to a Circle mage belongs to the Chantry.

She doesn't say whether it's magical or herbal. Considering the setting, for all we know it could be a animal skin condom of some sort, like fable has.

People loved Garrus and Tali and begged for them to be romances and are the most popular ones. Allowing things be be available to both sexes is hardly off putting. Steve Cortez was wanted, or at least a gay romance, that was also a bit about equality. people who others deem ugly as romances would have the vast majority disliking them to be with. people usually want good looks in a partner and in a pretend one they will be all the more harsh on looks. I don't see what the devs would get out of it but a lot of hate mail.

A lot of people think turians/Garrus is ugly and/or think Tali is not at all sexy/good looking with the suit.

Appearance is only one factor in attraction - similar to what I just mentioned, a lot of people thought Garrus was ugly or unattractive in appearance yet liked/romanced him anyway due to his personality/voice and other nonvisual factors.

As such, you could have an average or below average looking character who people still enjoy due to their personality.

Another example?  Varric, who is a short hairy dwarf, something most people would not find attractive - yet he was desired as a romance option.

Unless this hypothetical ugly character has no personality or a poor personality, I don't think it would automatically be as bad as you suggest.

Except many people will say otherwise, and the devs never planned on them being ugly. I am not saying that appearance is the only factor at all, but you can't make someone specifically to be ugly. Better to let the artists draw them as they think best. pretty creative group. Let them make the cool characters. None of those characters were made to be ugly and I think giving specific characters we want can pull them a lot these days. They make great characters. I really loved them, some more than others but I like them being as cool as they are. Specific looks might be going too far.

Sure. ME1 Ashley wasn't very pretty and I would've romanced Varric if I could have (though the bromance was good enough).

Do you honestly think no Bioware romance characters were made specifically be beautiful/pretty or handsome?
Of course they were. Why, then is it so bad to intentionally make a romance or female character who isn't classically good looking?

My point is not really about making characters ugly so much as average or below average. That does not necessarily mean broodmother hideousness. I also add to my point nontraditional characters, like Varric (dwarf) as I mentioned before. I'd like to see those kinds of characters being romances more.

Non traditional is great, but as I said, going out of your way to make a below average or a character specifically not great, ask fans, tons of people think the characters already put out fit that description. Looks are so up to the person who sees them. Let the artists do their best to make a character that fits with their idea of creation and let us see. It could be great.

It'd be funny if it was a possibility. Knowing Varric, he probably would've exaggerated the champion's story even further with romance involved.

My point wasn't that I want pregnancies to happen in the game. I can do without.
The point was that if we view the Dragon Age as a time that can be compared to the middle ages, then realistically, unwanted pregnancies, sickness, rotten teeth and lacking hygiene would happen.
But as a world where magic is common, I like to think that they have a way of preventing their teeth from falling out.

Well, I romanced Garrus, who sort of has the looks of a bird-insect-crustacean-dinosaur alien that lost 1/4th of his face. By human standards that's actually pretty ugly. But he looks more awesome than ugly to most people.

I'd romance a krogan, a batarian maybe even a Vorcha, if they were likable characters though. Vorcha and Batarians are ugly as... I don't know. Do they count? They better count.

It really matters. If they can endear themselves to me, then yeah. It's not like I only romanced characters in the first two games because I found them attractive or not, I did because as characters they were interesting for my PC's to romance for reasons.

My canon Shepard's with Garrus.... so, yes. As long as the personality shines through, I don't care.
