If all the LI in-game (both men & women) looked like utter trash, would you still romance him/her anyway? <3

The right 'ugly' character, with the right PC, I absolutely would.

I think one has to remember that "beauty" is something that changes dramatically as the mouth opens and thoughts start to come out. A truly 'ugly' character, not only superficially, - no way.

That doesn't mean that the concept seem terribly promising to me, for RPGs. But some RPG will be the first to do it, I guess.

I loved my DAO Dwarf noble gal and her Gorim sweetheart. Wish he hadn't turned "Jacob" on her. (In fairness to Gorim he thought she was dead).

Gorim is ugly to me but to my dwarf Aeducan princess he was Brad Pitt, Di Caprio and Depp all in one .

It is called role-playing

Pretty much. One of the fantasy game worlds I like to drag out when it comes to topics like this is Forgotten Realms, the old (2nd Ed.) sourcebooks for which go to lengths to exposit the number of cantrips, orisons, and magical items devised for contraception, hygiene, adornment, and general attractiveness. In one of the old Thay sourcebooks there's actually a cantrip for...removing unwanted body hair...for example.

Certainly, mages at least for their magic can adhere to higher standards of hygiene and personal attractiveness.

Aveline wasn't the prettiest girl in DAII but I would have easily chosen her over Isabela or Merrill if I was given the option.I have a thing for strong independent women lol

Another example?  Varric, who is a short hairy dwarf, something most people would not find attractive - yet he was desired as a romance option.

Varric not being a romance option was DA2's biggest sin.

This. Varric is unquestionably my favorite character in the whole of DA:2, and I would have loved to romance him. But I also know that the way the game ends, and he's narrating, then the game wouldn't have a narrator if he goes the way of the other LIs and leaves with the Champion.

Still a shame.

Me personally? I'm female in RL, but I play mostly male avatars (call me weird, it won't faze me.). My females have romanced Alistair and Zevran in DAO and Anders/Fenris in DAII. My males tend to romance Morrigan in DAO, though my DC that went all the way through romanced Leliana. I haven't had a gay romance yet, but it isn't out of the question.

So, the question is, would my avatar romance an ugly LI? Yes. Of course, for me to find a LI physically ugly they'd have to be an abomination, so the point is moot. (And yes, Broodmother/The Mother ugly counts too). Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so, too, is ugly.

TBH, I haven't found any of the LIs to be ugly and the devs did a better job on Isabella's face in 2 (I thought she was on the ugly side in DAO, but not terribly so.

In both games I find I like Zevran better than Alistair and Fenris better than Anders. Yes, it's the voice, and he's quite attractive, for an elf.

Huh... Now why do I have the feeling like Gorim had to wear a Johnny Depp mask every time they had sex...

It really depends on the personality whether I'd romance an "ugly" character or not. If the person in question is really sympathic, I'd certainly give it a go... besides, in Bioware games, I always try to romance every character at least once, then play again to have my ideal playthrough and LI at my side. For ex.: DA:O would be Elven Mage (Arcane Warrior, Spirit Healer) with Morrigan, ME1-3 would be Default Male Shep Vanguard with ME1 Liara at his side, and from ME2 onwards with Tali.
Haven't found an ideal combination for DA2 yet.

You play the roles that Bioware let you play. Not many options from their games since DAO though.

Like other people said before, it would depend on the personality of the character. Shoot we had people romancing Garrus in the Mass Effect series. He's not winning any beauty contests.

No, I would have to be a vegetable on life support and then I would ask for the machine to be turned off.

Did I post in here already? I don't remember. Oh well, I'm not sifting through the entire thread to find out.

I didn't find Anders physically attractive the first time I played the game. When I read about the characters prior to DA2's release, I planned to romance Fenris to see what his deal is. But as a character I ultimately found Anders far more compelling, and he's the only one I've romanced in any of my playthroughs, although I did do one where I slept with all of them.

The point was that if we view the Dragon Age as a time that can be compared to the middle ages, then realistically, unwanted pregnancies, sickness, rotten teeth and lacking hygiene would happen.
But as a world where magic is common, I like to think that they have a way of preventing their teeth from falling out.

To be fair, ancient Egypt had toothpaste, so dental hygiene has been around for a long while. Sickness does happen in DA too. I'm actually not so certain the Middle Ages were as "unhealthy" and "unhygienic" as people assume. But then again, I haven't done much research on the Middle Ages.

You don't like the broodmothers many racks? I will admit the desire demon has the edge in hotness, but the broodmother has a great personality.

She vomits acid. I see that as being an obstacle to any potential relationship.

I probably wouldn't romance someone I found unattractive, but then again I find a lot of people attractive. I thought Anders was very handsome and Leliana was gorgeous and I've seen people describe them both as if they had just crawled out the nasty end of a broodmother.

Not to mention her kids. Who'd want to play ball with a genlock?

Yes, if they had a personality that matched my current character.

Having said that, I'm going to stand up and say I don't mind the current stance of most video game characters being good looking. Video games are played for entertainment purposes, and beautiful women, handsome men entertain people.

In real life, personality trumps looks every time (though personally if you're in love with someone, I think you'd find them beautiful anyhow) - video games are a fantasy we play for entertainment.

One word: mods.

Even without a toolkit, it's easy to make characters/companions look any way you like. Glorious PC master race only, ofc.
