The thing about game romances is that you do them for completion's sake, or because you like the character. While a ridiculously ugly character would become a joke, Isabela for example (even Aveline remarks "you're not that good looking" to her) was of a pretty average appearance and I thought that was done quite well.
Would you romance an ugly character?

Heck yes I would! I don't really care what the LI's look like, I'm in it for the romance storyline, drama, char development, and general extra content. If I wanted a LI to have to be attractive I never would have romanced Garrus, Thane, or any female character but I do all of the romances, even Merril. I think being hideous would add an interesting aspect to the person's character. What defense mechanisms would they have developed because of it, etc...

Isn't it more pertinent to ask whether my character would do whoever, people regularly play characters outside of their of gender and have no problem with that collection of pixels romancing someone of the opposite sex, who they presumably wouldn't be attracted to themselves

It would depend on the level of ugliness and the character's personality.
Garrus is ugly by human standards, but fan demands made him into a romanceable character in ME 2. His personality was nothing remarkable in the first game, but he got a lot cooler in the second and third game. I'd be okay if Team Dragon Age decided to have a romanceable character who was not exactly the finest specimen of their species (e.g. a homely warrior woman a la Brienne of Tarth from Song of Ice and Fire or one of the more repulsive dwarf males with far apart rhino eyes and malignant watermelon-sized tumor for a nose), I'd be okay with it as long as they weren't just ugly for ugliness sake.

I don't do the in-game romances because "Oh look hot guy/girl I wanna hit that" (that would be kind of pathetic to be fair), I do it because I want the story value in it. In fact, I think an ugly/deformed character would be wonderful. Cliché as it may be, the Beauty and the Beast story usually hits home with most people - myself included.

I don't think that for me that's possible. Everyone is beautiful in my eyes. Y'all people need to learn to see past the superficial things that the society teaches you to associate with beauty and focus on the things that matter.

But for my part, I find that the more interesting someone is, the more attractive they become physically over time.
And Anders 2.0 wasn't much to write home about, but I still gave that relationship the ol' college try.
A great VA can do a LOT to make up for the lack of good looks. Someone mentioned Gorim, and I agree with that completely. Adam Howden also voiced that guy you find in a cage in Ostagar, and I'd have jumped him even though he was pretty fugly and irresponsible. So there you go.
But romancing someone with an annoying voice just plain wouldn't happen. I am that shallow!!
