So long as they were not cartoonishly ugly to the point where it was hard to look at them talk without laughing, sure.

But you gotta know that would be modded so fast. It'd be out faster than the nude mods, even.

Yeah, physical appearance is one of the first things to be modded in video games.  Just look at all the mods for Skyrim.  Attractiveness matters, and while it's shallow, it's also just part of being human.  Very few people can honestly say that they don't register physical appearance.

If all the LI in-game (both men & women) looked like utter trash, would you still romance him/her anyway? <3

That would depend on my PC.

Laerk: Hell yeah, I'd hit that. We're still on the 'all bi' thing, aren't we? Can they just form a line over there?

Thari: Ew. Never.

Brunnar: Hey, if they can look past my ugly mug, who am I to judge?

Niv: Pft. Romance.

Fedaris: She can quote the entire third chapter of Hesaron's Theory of Symbols and Lyrium Laylines, and cook the best lasagna this side of Antiva. I'm in love.

Interesting question.

In a video game, to be honest, I'm not sure if I would, but I would definetly could enjoy exploring the option to do so, and I think it could possibly be an interesting experience.

In appearance? Sure. In personality? Hells yes.

Personalities of companions and love interests have been as fresh faced and pretty boyed as their appearances. If I had the option to romance a truly horrible human being, in both personality and appearance, I might actually pursue it of my own accord, if only to escape the fangirl(boy) tripe that Bioware have been trying to feed me.

Oh yeah, yeah I went there.

This is actually interesting, but I imagine that it is even harder to do, because if what is ugly in appearence is subjective, what is ugly in personality is even more so.

They Li would properly have to be an ax-crazy baby eating cannibal for all us to agree that they have an ugly personality.

I'm not even sure that would be enough.  After all, a possessed terrorist who used the PC's feelings to manipulate him/her (if you're in a romance with him, he's all about the "if you love me you'll do this") is not considered too ugly to romance even after this is known.

Then there was the spy who admitted that she thought killing someone just after sex was a kindness.  And she was right -- it was far kinder than the torture she inflicted on others before killing them, though she admittedly did not like torturing and killing, though she also admittedly loved the hunt.

Then again, I loved the romance of a character who described murder and power in almost orgasmic ways and described a dubious consentual encounter (some people take it as an outright rape, though that wasn't the author's intention).  This was another character who thought it was a kindness to kill someone after sex, especially if the sex was really good.

No matter how ugly the actions of the love interest, if the character itself appeals to someone, they're appealling.

Edit:  If they were to make ugly love interests, dwarves, old, whatever, there would be people doing them to make jokes about it (like they made ugly PCs in DAO just to FRAPS the scenes and post them on youtube or laugh about Alistair "scrogging" a dwarf).  I don't think it would be a love interest that anyone took seriously unless the person was tortured.  And then, well, you have a Phantom of the Opera situation which isn't so bad.

I don't see how it would be a step back so long as ugly romance option isn't the only one. It would provide variety...

On the other hand we can always just create an ugly Warden (and laugh when Leliana or Zevran compliment them on their handsomeness or beauty), a hideous Hawke, or a homely PC for Inquisitor.

I have a Warden dwarf commoner lesbian named Mal who is quite plain and butch. She has a weathered look which speaks to the hard life she has lived in Dust Town.

So the conclusion is: It is subjective and the only way to make it not subjective is to make so over the top cartoonish that nobody would take the character serious.

Using three very loved characters who have done horrible things and one who was borderline emotionally abusive, people still adored them. So yes, ugly actions are not a turn off.

I don't think over-the-top cartoonish would be a good thing. Having someone who has serious issues is appealing to a lot of people. Having someone who is scarred physically can be seen as sexy as well.

As far as other traits go -- there are people who find Aveline ugly and those who find her beautiful. A character like that would be both popular and mocked (I thought she was gorgeous; I loved having a strong woman as a companion). Basically, if you have an ugly LI, they need to have some pretty strong redeeming qualities, and still, they won't be nearly as popular as a good looking LI.

Depends on how well the character is done. I thought Tali from Mass Effect had an extremely attractive personality (and voice). She did also have an attractive body, but I think they could make her considerably more physically unattractive and I'd still romance her because she's a really cool person.

I wouldn't romance though if the character was like over-the-top intentionally hideous. Regardless of what some people think you have to be attracted to at least one physical aspect of a person. I mean I have some friends who are really great people with awesome personalities, but they are dudes, so I'm not attracted to them in the least. An ugly character has to have at least some femininely attractive aspect (or masculine aspect if that's your preference).

I have a weird taste in men, so an evil-looking one with a scar across his eye would do, as long as he's not a dwarf. But not any type of ugly would do.

I think Morrigan is pretty but I only romanced her once for headcanon purposes because she's a dick.

So no, it really wouldn't matter if I though they were ugly.

If I call a face ugly, then it is something like this fan-made face of Tali (ME):

A good voice actor & dialogue does a hell of a lot where the face fails. I have major feels for The Phantom of the Opera (Erik) so I doubt much else in the way of "ugly" would bother me, especially when it's a ficitonal boyfriend and I'm not actually required to rub up on him in real-life.

I would but most other people would not. It would not be in Bioware's interest to test how shallow it's gamers are lol because many people would be turned off

So, to answer the question. Would I? I only hope the character I like the most doesn't make me answer that question. Make them the most attractive as well (like Morrigan in Origins).

Depends. Personality goes a long way. If the LI was, say, a homeless man who hadn't shaved or bathed in months I'd probably try it.

If I'm going to romance a bunch of pixels, I'd rather they were arranged in a way I find aesthetically pleasing. That said I romanced Garrus in ME2 because I found his personality engaging while Jacob seemed bland in comparison. If a character irritates or bores me, I won't want to romance them so personality carries some weight. Where I'd draw the line I'm not sure, but I found Thane more repulsive than Garrus. It's the fishy-skin aspect which bothers me, I think.

What matters to me is an interesting character, not a pretty one. One that meshes well (or contrasts with) my protagonist in a way that makes them both shine.
An ugly character still has potential to have a great story to them, and fantastic interactions to boot.

Reading this thread somehow reminded me of Sneff from Crono Cross. Sneff was so intentionally ugly that i figured his hideousness was used to mask his strength, and skills from players who were too vain to choose him for their teams. Basically i thought his strength was proportional to his ugly, and damn was i wrong, as he was weak and ugly.

<Back on topic> Blah blah blah, ugly is subjective, as i thought this lady looked like Gary Busey's mugshot, but my friend thought she... Blah, blah, blah.(Generic anecdote about beauty being in the eye of the beholder.)

So yeah i wouldn't mind a companion who's facial features, body shape doesn't conform to western or eastern idealizations.
