After reading one elderly gentleman's threads on how angry and frustrated he has grown playing, I'm offering this advice for those who have never played a Bioware game before.

Max out your character's Cunning as soon as possible. Twenty is a nice number to have for Cunning, although opinions may differ. The important thing is that it be high, early. Also, give priority to points in Coercion.

The better you are at Coercion, the easier the game is overall. Since Coercion success depends upon Cunning plus the actual points in Coercion, throwing your early points into them makes sense.

You can rely upon your companions for combat if you wish. You really can not rely upon them for social interaction.

That's your character's job.

Yep, it adds more options to dialogue wich makes it more fun. Thankfully I discovered this not to late in a few tries. Coercion is really important.

Maxing Coercion is good advice. Getting 30 Cunning for ANY character is bad advice. With maxed Coercion, I didn't need to put a single point into Cunning. I don't remember failing a single persuade check.

Regarding Cunning, any non-rogue needs to put either 0 or 1 points into it (assuming you care to explore all of the Fade). That's it. Anything more is a waste. A rogue will need more Cunning though.

Non-rogue characters should stop at 16 cunning, which includes Fade bonuses, so they can get all 4 coercion skills. They need no more cunning then that. That's also enough cunning to you to get all other cunning based skills, like Survival and Tactics

Indeed. Some race/class combinations will start with 10 Cunning (city elf warrior for example). They need to place 1 point there, preferably sooner rather than later.

Others, like all mages, start with 11 Cunning and need not place a single point there.

I need to proof read better. I meant 20.

The main thing is to be able to do a hard persuade check.

For people wanting to coast through the game on Nightmare, we really ought to have some stickied build threads. A lot of good stuff has been posted, but sadly it can be hard to find sometimes.

I tend to agree.  It would solve a lot of forum space and player anguish if there were character builds readily available to the masses.
