How is Oghren a favorite? He's my second least favorite character.

Crosses fingers for Lelianna.

I don't care - well, more or less - if Zev is a playable companion or not, but I *want* him to be present in the expansion. Even if it is only when my PC leaves Vigil's Keep and say goodbye to his favorite Antivan, Zev must be there :D

But seeing as how they said ONE, is where my head begins to hurt.

Crap, maybe it is Oghren. Because that is the only way (with all possible endings) they could defenitly say "one companion returns". Instead of "a former companion possibly returns". If that makes sense.

but, well, it says who you encounter, which can basically mean anything, right? he/she/it must not even be in your party. or do i misread the sentence horribly?

yeah, it says encounter an old party member, which means that person doesn't have to be in your party this time around, you will just meet him/her/it.

That could be true as well. Speaking of Gorim, maybe he will get healed and join up! Say his entire family get slaughtered before they can escape Denerim... oooh yeah, Gorim Grey Warden time.

Hehe, I definitely wouldn't mind that. But hell yes, it could be everybody. Probably it's Sandal. He IS a favourite with lots of people, after all.

I have a hard time believing they would choose\\force a specific\\canon style ending to origins....

Looking at the possible endings for Origins, there is enough variation to to incorporate your decisions and still narrow it down....

Here are the potential epilogues....(spoiler if you don't want to know them all)....

http://dragonage.wik...m/wiki/Epilogue

Zevran has 8 possible endings listed...2 of which are he dies...1 he goes to Antiva to head the crows...1 he travels alone..4 others he remains, 3 of which it is mentioned "for a time"....whether that means staying through the next expansion or not, certainly is a mystery...Of course if he stays to train wardens, that doesn't mean he couldn't stay behind to continue while you investigate and IMO the story is much more compelling if the story opened with Zevran leaving your side for a time as part of your story arc...I just think there are some very convenient reasons for him not to be a companion...but he certainly could be....

I really hope that what they meant by returning character was depending upon your ending...be that Leliana, Zevran, Alistair or possibly even Shale....

As for Shale, I also agree that it is far more likely that she is not available as a companion...there is only 1 ending which mentions travelling with you, and it is far too convenient to use one of the other endings to find a reason for her not to be available as a companion....

the confusing one is Alistair...I mean he could vary from being dead to travelling with the warden and all stops in between...greatest chances are he is an NPC, as a king, or fellow warden and not a companion...but he certainly could be, under the right circumstances be a companion...

Ok, he travels alone when you tell him to go.  He leads the crows when you sacrifice yourself.  He stays with the woman/man he loves and helps rebuild the gray wardens.  He adventures "for a time" when the PC tells him to go but make sure he comes back to her.  He stays in denerim "for a time" when the PC stays in Denerim "for a time."  He travels "for a time" when the PC travels "for a time" though since the information is presented quite a few screens a part, many people take that as it meaning a breakup.

*grin* I really HOPE they mean romantic partner when they say you travel with one important companion.

Edit: And I don't believe it will be Shale.  She and Wynne (or she by herself depending) go to Tevinter to try and cure her golem'ism, and there are reports of a dwarf woman if you sacrifice yourself who is trying to kill all pidgins!

Second edit: I know I do need to trust the writers here.  I have a feeling no matter how this pans out, we won't be let down.

I love Oghren. No one cracks me up more with their dialogue than Oghren (Morrigan's wit makes me crack a smile a lot too). He kills me. And you know what? I think his speech before the final fight is my favorite of them all. Short and heartfelt.

Fan favorite doesn't necessarily imply nor mean that it was a companion, nor does it mean that they will come back in a form we liked them

Despite the fact I am still sorely miffed that Duncan turned down my advances when he came to my noble human girls castle, I would simply adore it if that 'evolved darkspawn' was in fact a turned Duncan, or even the King... :devil:or if there was a new level of morality on the side of the Darkspawn so the lines between good/evil were blurred somewhat and it became more difficult to stand staunchly on one side alone... or...or.... stop the obsessive creative in me now please :wizard:

I do hope it isn't Morrigan who returns however. Frankly, I found her character one of the most flat... and I am not talking bosoms, despite ending up with Zevran after I ditched Alistair after Ali pursued ME only to give me a talking to about duty soon after approaching ME for sex. Pffft. I'm not bitter.

Still you know, despite the obvious benefits of an intelligent acrobatic elven assasin as my chosen companion, i am still holding out (hypothetically naturally  )  for the return of Duncan ...  I don't even care if he is undead, darkspawn or even a dream sequence in The Fade.  A girl can dream...

This type of game/story complete with dialogue trees reminds me of the books I enjoyed so much as a child, where at the bottom of every page there was a choice, and your choice sent you to different pages with different endings.  I loved them so much that when my parents got a computer  I taught myself to program basic stories where you could do the same.

The main characters are mostly very realistic - Zevran is actually quite a complex person, psychologically at least, for just one example --  i suspect I will *not* import my character over immediately  and instead play with a fresh slate for a while.   While the emotional payoff may not be all hearts and flowers, serenades under moonlit skies and bountiful cheer in this particular game/story - it is enduring for what it is, a dark, dreamy tale woven carefully by our own emotions, thoughts and choices - what you put INTO the game is surely just as much as you can get out.    I LOVE that, even when they make me hate that. :)  THAT is good. Swooping however, remains bad.  Such as it where.

Can't wait to see where the writers brains will take us on a journey this go-around...

Someone posted a shot in the official thread that showed Oghren from a side view in the trailer, so there's 99% chance he's the "popular character" making a return to your party, unless that particular shot was from some event that shows NPC's and not companions. Like I said in another thread he was the safe and easy route so not really surprised it's him. Hopefully we'll get some cameo's from a few others, specifically the ones who could be romanced.

If it is the red headed dwarf, this is going to suck. Favorite has to be one of the fab 3 in the trailer.

Oghren is the safest and wisest choice. Not only is he funny, but he also isn't caught up in some quest of his. Clearly, Alistair can't, he is either a king or is dead / drunk. Sten went back home. Morrigan left with or without a kid. Wynn is probably dead. Shale is DLC, so it might be problematic to have him.

Zevran and Leliana could have been in. But both are romance options. And people will start complaining that their romance choice wasn't a party member. However, it is entirely possible that they will have a cameo.

So the safest choice is indeed Oghren. And I don't mind at all. There is one problem however. What if the PC never took Oghren along?

In my playthrough, Alistair is neither King, dead or drunk.

However Zevran is dead.

I'd say it depends on the file you use, and you pick your favourite character to return with you as long as that character is available. So that would mean the obvious exception of Morrigan, and any other characters who left/died in your individual playthrough.

This makes the most sense, in my opinion. A single character is definitely not in everyone's playthrough at the end; each character has the option of not being there, and so could not be taken along with everyone. This way, everyone has their favourite, and there are no mysterious re-appearances by dead party members.

you know what i think you are on to something there. a couple times in Origins it is mentioned that the darkspawn would drag survivors back underground, but nobody knows what they do with them in the end, and i alwasy thought they turn them into darkspawns, so duncan returns as the darkspawn that talks is pretty plausible.

And Alistair would be overjoyed. Then you kill said talking darkspawn Duncan and lose 50 rep with Alistair, because it makes about as much sense as Alistair at landsmeet.

Oghren is about the only true friend the PC gets besides Dog. The guy will stay with you NO MATTER WHAT, unlike every other Party member who will have a hissy fit and leave/try to kill you if you do something they don't go for. If you dislike Oghren then please, punch yourself in the face for me.

2 of the 15 hour expansion will cover the possible endings alone. Sounds like Bioware lol.

I agree that oghren is the safest choice. Shale would work well too, were she not DLC. While I would be happy to see any of the companions from the first game, "old favorite" leads me to rule out the more polarizing characters like Morrigan or Sten. Though I have a feeling we will be seeing the former depending on our decisions in the first game, as a non-recruit-able NPC.Perhaps the returning character depends on your relationships/choices in the previous game? That would also be interesting, even though personally I would be happy with Oghren.

He was the most hilarious character, imo. Although I was generally almost as intoxicated as he was while playing, so perhaps that has something to do with it....

In the preview so far there is yes what appears to be Oghren....Allister is in it as well...and my son pointed out at one point that there was a character similar looking to Wynn.....

given the plot for Awakening; " rebuild the wardens for a time, and travel to discover the secrets of the darkspawn" it's identical to the epilogue ending when the warden lives, and their lover goes with them.

Should you import your warden, odds are you get your romance....if you killed your warden, they most likely give you oghren or whoever at random...

I wont even remotely try to hold my breath for sure on anything just yet as it was just confirmed, and there have been no other real details let out...nor do I suspect anything " solid" until release.

It will turn out that the fan favourite is Teaghan - to the accompaniment of fangirl squeeing all over the place.
