Lets get one thing straight. Mass Effect 3, in spite of its flaws (which are numerous), it's still a very good game. You combine that with the fact that we're dealing with an industry thats struggling to innovate and get past the Call of Duty mold and it's a no brainer for RPG of the year. .

ME3 a very  good game? Ok. A good RPG? HELL NO. This award is an insult for all those true RPG's and for the whole video game industry. ME3 was going to be an excellent shooter with great story where your decisions matter, instead we got a shooter with awful writting, just like many other shooters.

I hate to throw a wrench in things, but whats a good RPG?

Wow, the best game actually won best game. That's a first.

No it didn't...that was Journey.

Hey, Journey is freakin' ridick, but it's got sh*t on the Walking Dead. Second place.

Uh...no.

From what I played I thought it was good, but nothing super special.

Mass Effect 3 wasn't GOTY material.Assassin's Creed 3 was just as bad as ME3.I haven't played the others.I also don't understand how ME2 was a nominee for GOTD.

Playing both halves of Dishonored---high-death and high-stealth---was one of my favorite gaming experiences this year.

I think it won action-adventure. I was quite surprised by that.

Yeah? Good deal. Certain games got recognition that deserved it tonight.

Walking Dead win is good for the industry. ME3 win would change nothing, while Walking Dead win (or if it was Journey) further promotes downloadable/indie/arcade games that don't have $50+ million budgets like games like AC3, ME3 or Halo 4.

ME3 still won Best RPG so fans shouldn't be disappointed

Seboist wrote...

Far too late for that. Choices didn't matter long before ME3.

Let's not go into blind hyperboles. Some choices from previous games didn't really change anything like Council, Rachni or Collector Base, but there were many choices that did matter a lot. Genophage arc and Geth vs. Quarian arc incorporate past choices very well and make them matter. Many of the loyalty missions mattered. The Coup incorporates varity of choices.

I know right, Journey was beautiful.  I wouldn't expect it to win GOTY in these type of awards anyway.  It's not as popular, IMO.

I certainly wouldn't have been diasspointed if it had won though. It's an amazing game.

Still think games deserve something a lot more dignified than the VGAs though.

Ah, so the kind of RPG that BioWare made when they created Mass Effect, a linear, character driven story where most of the build elements are simple and streamlined enough for players to understand.

Good to see you are not contradicting yourself too much.

Funny, they didn't matter that much in The Walking Dead either, considering the plot never changes.

I'm a tad annoyed that the voice actor for Clem won over Hale. I found Clems performance to sometimes not be consistent and fake. Almost like the voice actor was trying too hard to sound like a little girl.

Yes yes and that argument can be said over ANY Story ever even Gear of War, what normally make a good rpg is choice making as well as stat building. To be frank the longest time rpg was defined as Turn based, but that change.

Hell Ever play BoF3 that game had some insane stat building with the dragon gem system.

Also the reaction of the crowd only grew when walking dead was on. It was quiet for. Ac3 and dishonored as well. Know why? Because the walking dead is a very popular tv show, and most the people at the vgas don't play games, but they know the show.

Oh, so you think the only reason it won is because of the show? lol Good grief, how silly.

Nevermind, I take back what I said earlier. The bad taste and fanboyism is rampant in this thread. I'm going to leave your idiocy before it rubs off on me. The best game won.

Stay mad.

I did. One of my favorites too. And **** Balio and Sunder, I hated them for the first half of the game and it felt good killing them when they became that unicorn thing.

But sadly, my argument is fairly sound because, well, that is the proper classification. Turn based is just mechanics for combat, which has little bearing on the type of RPG that is made. Same with how stat building works, be it a simple level up system or picking and choosing where your talents go.  Because that is all mechanical it is impossible to classify. What video game RPGs should fall under are the big three sub-genres of dungeon  crawler, power fantasy and light RPG.

See, Gears is not classified as an RPG because it is mechanically a TPS in design, all pure action. Mass Effect is because the games, despite the changes made, are designed with a branching narrative in mind, compounded with level up and upgrade systems. So you have downtime along with the action in the mix, and options for optimization of builds and classes to pick and choose from. This is why it makes a good Light RPG, which is what all of those other games are; simple, story driven and character based.

But people are stubborn, so I let it go.
