Lets get one thing straight. Mass Effect 3, in spite of its flaws (which are numerous), it's still a very good game. You combine that with the fact that we're dealing with an industry thats struggling to innovate and get past the Call of Duty mold and it's a no brainer for RPG of the year. .
ME3 a very good game? Ok. A good RPG? HELL NO. This award is an insult for all those true RPG's and for the whole video game industry. ME3 was going to be an excellent shooter with great story where your decisions matter, instead we got a shooter with awful writting, just like many other shooters.
I hate to throw a wrench in things, but whats a good RPG?
Eartbound, Super Mario Rpg, Final Fantasy 3/6, Fianl Fantasy 7, Lunar Silver star story, Chorno Trigger, Breath of fire 1-4,I could go on but this list get pretty big.
Ah, so the kind of RPG that BioWare made when they created Mass Effect, a linear, character driven story where most of the build elements are simple and streamlined enough for players to understand.
Good to see you are not contradicting yourself too much.
Yes yes and that argument can be said over ANY Story ever even Gear of War, what normally make a good rpg is choice making as well as stat building. To be frank the longest time rpg was defined as Turn based, but that change.
Hell Ever play BoF3 that game had some insane stat building with the dragon gem system.
I did. One of my favorites too. And **** Balio and Sunder, I hated them for the first half of the game and it felt good killing them when they became that unicorn thing.
But sadly, my argument is fairly sound because, well, that is the proper classification. Turn based is just mechanics for combat, which has little bearing on the type of RPG that is made. Same with how stat building works, be it a simple level up system or picking and choosing where your talents go. Because that is all mechanical it is impossible to classify. What video game RPGs should fall under are the big three sub-genres of dungeon crawler, power fantasy and light RPG.
See, Gears is not classified as an RPG because it is mechanically a TPS in design, all pure action. Mass Effect is because the games, despite the changes made, are designed with a branching narrative in mind, compounded with level up and upgrade systems. So you have downtime along with the action in the mix, and options for optimization of builds and classes to pick and choose from. This is why it makes a good Light RPG, which is what all of those other games are; simple, story driven and character based.
But people are stubborn, so I let it go.
