I agree it an rpg all be it a gutted one at it's roots it does cover everything "rpg" You level up, you find items, you build stats, use powers is it the deepest? God no any lighter and it would be a TPS but it close enough.
Now do i think it RPG of the year.. well sadly yes only for the fact it compation.. was pretty weak im pretty sure 2 of the 4 games failed HORRABLE.
But if this game was to be put up next to say for humor say BoF3 for game of the year... BoF3 would have ripped it apart.
I wouldn't be so sure. As much as I like BoF 3 it is two different styled stories with different senses of humor. Considerng the market today, people would be cynical to say that Breath of Fire 3 is horribly outdated (which in some ways it is, lets be honest with ourselves.)
Depth doesn't really matter. Thats basically the point. Depth can mean either how crunchy the mechanics of the game system, or how adored the actual storyline is. It ultimately depends on what you prefer more vs what actually is. It's wholly subjective basically.
See the reason you said why I think ME3 would lose, Me3 Depends HEAVLY on you loving the character from past game as well as the story, on it own it doesn't hold well.. and even playing the last two toward the end it begans to break apart.
I mean heck I won't even say the ending for me it was The Tali missions when the Geth went " oh wait never mind what we said in ME2! We want reaper tech!" that the story began to unwind for me.
And as i said as a rpg the "rpg" levels are pretty damn thin, let put this into light.. FryCry3, is a Deeper rpg then ME3... form a rpg stand point...
First off, the destructoid or machinima quote saying its Skyrim with guns is a gross mistake, because it has no real mechanical system to it that would give it that foundation. At best it is an open world shooting gallery, at worst a simulation.
From an RPG standpoint I should also say open world games have issues as well. By the logic of what you prefer most of them, like the Elder Scrolls games, lack enough depth to enjoy outside of combat builds. But that is why its a power fantasy type game, nothing wrong with that, it'sjust different tastes.
Again, the point is depth is sort of irrelevent to what makes it a role playing game. Ever hear of Costume Quest? Tim Schafer's little RPG about Halloween? Its about four hours long and very simple to play, but its still an RPG as much as Mass Effect 3 is, and as much as Skyrim is. It's just different and doesn't need depth of a crunchy systemto carry it.
