I do not mean in every scene but selective scenes just to remind us what a great journey it has been.

Gosh no. We already had "nostalgia" music (read "recicled") in DAII, which was not that bad, mind you, DA:O's music was damn good. But then we got Calenhad docks music in the Wounded coast, and it didn't fit at all.
I love Inon Zur's work, so the more and newer, the better. I'd rather not hear any more reused track again.

This one I really liked, though.

The music for the previous DA games was good (I did like Leliana's Song) but I would prefer a new score to fit in with the setting.

I wouldn't mind hearing one or two in a scene or two, but I would prefer that the new game consists mostly of new music.

One or two songs that harkened back to Origins would be good, I agree. But I want music that reminds me Orlais is based on French history and culture.

My one request for music is that they SOMEHOW manage to incorporate it without it being louder than everything else regardless of setting.

Every game I have played in the last few years, I have had to basically turn down the musical setting to maybe 20% volume so as to not have it playing so loudly that you can actually hear the speech.

Is there no way to dynamically alter music volume so that it softens greatly when characters are speaking?

I would love to be nostalgic about the musical score, unfortunately, I usually have to play with the music off if I want to actually hear party banter, or sometimes it even overpowers scripted conversations.

The problem with what they did (including past music) in DA2 is that the art style and general aura of the game was completely different from DAO. Zur did what any good composer would do; fit the music according to visual aesthetics. It sounded out of place because we had old-school rpg music superimposed on new-school rpg settings. It's like scoring an action film with Baroque music...

Good topic. I've been thinking about this off and on and have been meaning to post this.
*DA:O and DA2 spoilers ahead*
I would like this for when you encounter characters or groups from previous games. For example, in DA2 near the end of Act 2, you bump into Alistair and the Grey Wardens and in the background you hear the music from Ostagar in DA:O and it instantly resonated with me (theme occurs at 42 seconds after Alistair introduces himself).

So if we were to meet Sten or Morrigan in DA3, you might hear the camp theme from DA:O since most of your interactions took place in the camp and when you met companions for the first time in DA:O, you also heard this theme.
DA:O camp theme:

Bioware has a habit of playing a given theme when the character gives their name. As with the previous example from DA2, the music begins when Alistair introduces himself. It is the same with Sten and Wynne. This is not accidental and is a very effective technique in creating a musical connection with a given character. With Wynne it is even more striking since the Ostagar theme is replaced by the camp theme after she introduces herself.

One of my favorite moments in DA:O is the 'farewells' scene close to the end of the game. Scenes like these are not uncommon in Bioware games and the music only makes it better:

DA2 also had a similar scene but there wasn't any music at all and it felt a bit flat.

Based on what Bioware has done in the past with their games, its pretty safe to assume they will keep doing this. The amount of time making DA3 should allow for the music to be just as great as it was in the first Dragon Age game.

edit: forgot to include the battle music from the Awakenings add-on. Its baddass and needs to return.

The only thing that beats Mass Effect's soundtrack, as a whole (meaning all three games,) is the Jade Empire soundtrack by Jack Wall.  It's absolutely gorgeous, and still my favorite.

The DA music is, unfortunately, way down the list.

Another remix of Dragon Age: Origins main theme as main theme for DA3 obviously, make it as good as the previous two please! I think more vocals would make it more epic, which would fit the DA3 main theme, considering the theme of the game ( a very large ****ing war )

Good post, I was thinking something along these lines as well.

I remember playing DA2 for the first time. The Ostagar theme during that encounter at the end of Act 2 made the moment all the more powerfull. It felt familiar in a way that although it's a different character and a different story it still is a part of a greater Thedas universe.

Tu sum up, I do hope DA3 has a whole new score that matches the setting of the game, but also, in case of returning characters/situations/places at least a hint of their original theme from previous games.
